00:03Director Ken Loesch has joined the growing list of cinema legends criticizing superhero movies.
00:08After Martin Scorsese said Marvel movies, quote, aren't cinema, now 83-year-old veteran director Loesch is taking a swipe at the adventures of Iron Man and his friends.
00:17Speaking to Sky News, the British filmmaker described Marvel's output as, quote, boring. He went on to say this.
00:22They're made as commodities like hamburgers or whatever, and it's not about communicating. It's not about sharing our imagination.
00:33He continued,
00:34It's about making a commodity which will make a profit for a big corporation. They're a cynical exercise.
00:39They're a market exercise, and it has nothing to do with the art of cinema.
00:42William Blake said, when money is discussed, art is impossible.
00:45Loesch follows Francis Ford Coppola, who branded Marvel titles, quote, despicable, as well as Scorsese,
00:51who sparked the debate when he called the movies theme park films, adding later that they were, quote, invading cinema.
00:56Avengers!
01:03Assemble.
01:04The conversation is unlikely to die down anytime soon, with the question now having become a staple for any interview with a non-Marvel director.
01:10Loesch has been promoting his latest feature, Sorry We Missed You.
01:13There's always someone on your back, isn't there?
01:15Come on, we've got time to make up. Let's go.
01:17I'd rather work on my own now. I'd be my own boss.
01:19Let's just get a few things straight at the start, though, shall we?
