00:00It's gone straight through the red line.
00:04You've got damage, you've got damage.
00:06Don't do that! Stay still!
00:08Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:10It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:15Turn over! You're under arrest.
00:17Intent supply class.
00:18You're drug.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25You've got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the UK's most dangerous roads.
00:30Oh, nobody's been killed out of this. I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast we're going?
00:35It's scary when stuff like this happens.
00:37In life and death situations.
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be tased!
00:41We've got runners.
00:43Face down!
00:46Yes, yes, successful sting.
00:49Around every corner.
00:51Great acting, mate.
00:54There's a new challenge.
00:56For the traffic cops.
00:57They've got a vehicle now!
01:01I'm going home.
01:02Stop grabbing me, like, up!
01:07It's crash, crash, crash!
01:09I've got it.
01:10Coming up.
01:11Open the door! Open the door now!
01:12Banned van drivers.
01:15Vehicle stopped.
01:17Put your arms around, I've seen, mate.
01:19Thieves on the run.
01:20It's got what looks like all this stolen gear inside.
01:23And repeat offenders.
01:25The licence.
01:27And genuinely, all my kids' lives didn't realise I was back or I would never have drove my vehicle.
01:31That is gospel.
01:32Caught red-handed.
01:34Have you got a drive in, Ashley?
01:35I'm not telling you.
01:36I'm not telling you.
01:37It is cops and robbers to them.
01:38Put your arms down.
01:39Whoa!
01:40He is intoxicating.
01:41He should be driving.
01:42Back up!
01:432-4-6.
01:44Any standing by?
01:45Yeah, go ahead.
01:46Head past 5-4.
01:47Just to let you know, we've had a look at the Shardlow services.
01:48That's clear.
01:49We're just coming to the Wellington services now.
01:50We'll have a look at that and update you.
01:51Yeah, that's received.
01:53A police helicopter and Derbyshire's traffic cops are looking for a stolen transit.
02:14Stolen from outside the owner's address without the keys.
02:19It's a white transit van with yellow chevrons on the back.
02:25Keyless thefts are quite common at the moment.
02:29Sergeant Scott Riley's leading the search.
02:32We're seeing gangs that are working together, travelling across the borders, coming from Sheffield,
02:40coming from West Yorkshire, coming from the bigger cities onto Derbyshire.
02:45We're just trying to do an area search at the minute to try and find the van.
02:52It won't have gone far.
02:54PC Alex Head is two miles in front.
02:57Alex, receiving.
02:59Hello?
03:00I've not got lots on.
03:01How many units have they got assigned to it?
03:03I think we've got four, three to four units.
03:06Sir Scott, three armed and the one making.
03:09Yes, yes, I'm happy that you go with them.
03:12They hit a few minutes ago now, five minutes ago, heading west down.
03:18No further hits or sightings.
03:2010 passengers for information and I'm receiving your downlink.
03:23I'll tell you.
03:24A transit van can be doing only between 70 and 100.
03:29We're pushing up to it all the time.
03:34How do you tango, sir?
03:36Go ahead.
03:38Whereabouts in the country was it stolen from?
03:41Is this a natural route back to that location at all?
03:45Stolen from.
03:47The van was stolen over 12 hours ago in Nottinghamshire
03:51and could have cloned plates to avoid detection.
03:55Alex, I'm trying to inform you, mate, lane one.
03:58Chef, chef, chef, chef.
04:01Make your chef, chef, come on.
04:02Make your chef, come on in.
04:03Half an hour behind you.
04:04Somebody changes the identity of van or swaps the number plates for a different van, then
04:14you're looking at something totally different.
04:16and quite often you're looking at something which isn't what's been described to you.
04:23I'm trying to get a bit serious to confirm the reg.
04:26Ahead of Scott.
04:27I know you're receiving off tango 4-7.
04:29Officers are tailing a suspect van but it doesn't have any markings.
04:33They've got highway maintenance written on the back.
04:36I'm just obviously constantly changing plates.
04:38There can be a lot of red herons.
04:40Hello, tango 4-4.
04:43Yes, yes.
04:45You've now got three Darvish cars to go on.
04:48After 20 minutes searching, there's still no sign of the transit.
04:54When you're looking for something, you really don't rule anything out until you're satisfied
05:00in your own mind that that's not what you're looking for.
05:03I'm very surprised we've not caught it by now.
05:07Another transit ahead.
05:09I looked at Alex.
05:12Yeah, clear.
05:14Give me a near side indication.
05:18It's come off.
05:20I can't see what it is.
05:22I'm off just to shake that one.
05:25Got no chevrons on the background.
05:27No chevrons on it but I've got it.
05:29It's slowing.
05:30I'll wait for him past to get with me.
05:33Hey, past last, what is it?
05:36It pulled up briefly.
05:38It's now moving off.
05:40We always crew on our own and because I know that they're wanted for a crime,
05:46their desire to get away makes them more dangerous for me to deal with.
05:50And you have to know where your backup's coming from.
05:53Ready to stop?
05:59Put your arms on.
06:01Let's see, mate.
06:02Yeah, what's wrong?
06:03Stay there.
06:04Stay there.
06:05Stay there.
06:06I'm not going nowhere.
06:07What's wrong?
06:08You're under arrest on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
06:10You do not have to say anything with my arm.
06:11What?
06:12I'm going to try a question.
06:13Some two inches later, a line in court.
06:15All right.
06:16Wait.
06:17Just ankle with me.
06:18My arm.
06:19My arm is in there.
06:20Yeah.
06:21All right.
06:22Stay there.
06:23Stay calm.
06:24This car's reported a stolen, mate.
06:25This car's reported a stolen.
06:26No, it's not me.
06:28No, it's been reported a stolen.
06:30No, it's not stolen.
06:31Have you got a driving accident, buddy?
06:32I'm not telling you.
06:33Oh, are you going to tell me your name?
06:34No, I'm not.
06:35Okay.
06:36Arrest, mate.
06:37I have arrested you.
06:38Good.
06:39Get my arm out of here.
06:40Get me in that car, then.
06:41I'll do when somebody else comes.
06:42What do you need anyone else for?
06:43Eh?
06:44What do you need anyone else for?
06:45Of course I don't want to fight with the MTO.
06:46You don't need to fight.
06:47I've got a heart problem, bro.
06:48I understand heart surgery.
06:50What's the risk of me?
06:51If you've got a heart problem, then calm down.
06:54Get outside for me.
06:55Please, Swiftie.
06:56While Scott deals with the driver.
06:59And he arrives to assist.
07:04What's that for?
07:05It's for you.
07:07I'll pass.
07:08We're overhead.
07:14What have you got in your pockets, Sam?
07:16Just one minute.
07:17Can you keep going with me, Sam?
07:18Yeah, yeah.
07:19No, it's going to hurt me.
07:20No, no sharks, needles, knives, guns.
07:23I've got the sweet on, though.
07:24What sweet have you gone for?
07:25I like a million.
07:26It is quite well known, Knots are telling me.
07:29Is there anything close?
07:31You got a call?
07:32I know.
07:33Come in.
07:34Come in.
07:35I've got the last four of the binners.
07:37Is that the one we're looking for, please?
07:39Anything in it, Swiftie?
07:40Can't get it.
07:41No.
07:42Stolen this morning.
07:43Stolen from Mansfield.
07:44Keys not taken.
07:45And if recovered, preserved footprints.
07:48We've checked the bin plate on the van and that van was stolen in Mansfield this morning, which is in Nottinghamshire.
07:55It's not as described.
07:57It's not got the chevrons on it, but I think that's because it's on clone plates and I think that the genuine vehicle's probably got chevrons.
08:05The centre's slightly awry, but we've just caught it in time.
08:08Good job, that.
08:09Good.
08:10Good teamwork.
08:11It's estimated 1,000 vans are stolen in the UK every month.
08:16The chap that I've got in the back of my car is a disqualified driver, quite well known to the police.
08:21The passenger's also been arrested, because we don't know at this stage whether he was or wasn't involved in the theft.
08:26This cops and robbers to them.
08:28As long as I've been a policeman, they've probably been stealing vans.
08:34Lovely, mate. Have you got any jewellery on?
08:36No.
08:37Excellent.
08:38You've knit that last time.
08:39What I did?
08:40No, not you.
08:41Oh, the police?
08:42Yeah, that one that was at the car earlier on.
08:44Oh, the Notts lad?
08:45Yeah.
08:46Yes, it did seem that he knew you.
08:48Yeah, he knows me very well.
08:49He said he knew you well.
08:51Yeah, he knows me very well.
08:52Just turn around for us, buddy.
08:55You get a certain type of offender that likes to steal vans, and all they've ever done is steal vans.
09:00They know how to steal vans.
09:02It's their bag.
09:03They've got the contacts to move the vans on very quickly.
09:07That one?
09:08That one.
09:09South 12?
09:10No, it says it'll bail up.
09:12When an offender has got a pattern that they like, and it's lucrative for them, there's nothing really to deter them.
09:19And they put you on the sergeant.
09:20The chap's been arrested for theft of that motor vehicle from the offence this morning, and disqualified driving.
09:26Unbelievably, he's got four days left to go on his ban, so he's completely messed that one up.
09:32There you go, buddy.
09:33Yeah.
09:34He's now going to be banned for at least another 18 months, even if he's not found to go through the staff.
09:37They'll bring you to the limit, all right?
09:39Yeah.
09:42Coming up.
09:43Back in the car.
09:44More thieves in vans on the run.
09:46Open the door!
09:47Open the door now!
09:48It's got what looks like all this stolen gear inside.
09:51And a banned driver.
09:53He's intoxicated and shouldn't be driving.
09:55Shut up, Warner.
09:56Yes, you are.
09:57Testing the limits.
09:58You failed the roadside breath test.
09:59Oh, mate.
10:14Go again with the full regs, please, and I see our phone.
10:17We've just monitored on the local channel that there's been a domestic.
10:23The male's driven off and is intoxicated.
10:26She's described that he was driving a blue van.
10:30After capturing two suspected van thieves, Sergeant Scott Riley's back on patrol.
10:36Looking at the records as well, there's some suggestion that there's a disqualified driver.
10:41And he might be coming back towards the address.
10:43They could have another argument.
10:45So it's really important that we intercept him as soon as we can.
10:49The public expects the police to take action.
10:52So we take that duty very seriously.
10:54And we will really up the ante to stop that person driving.
11:01So we're just...
11:02Oh, what's this one?
11:12That's it.
11:15An ACO4.
11:22Go ahead.
11:24Yeah, I'm behind that vehicle.
11:2824, are you going to try and put a stop on it or are you waiting to back up?
11:33Where does he live?
11:36Stop by.
11:37The suspect's less than a mile away from where the alleged domestic took place.
11:42Yeah, it's 24 and I'm going to put a stop in then so it doesn't get into that address.
11:4724.
11:48Just confirm, is it a disqualified driver?
11:51Yes, yes, a disqualified driver.
11:55Yes, yes, sir.
11:56Just going to put a stop in.
11:5924, maybe not on the log.
12:02271 travelling towards us.
12:05An ACO4.
12:07I know that potentially he's going to be quite violent.
12:11Yeah, the illuminated vehicle lights and sirens on.
12:14We're at low speed but the vehicle is failing to stop at this time.
12:17Because I've been told he's drunk.
12:19Okay.
12:23It may be that if he's intoxicated, he's not aware of me presence at this time.
12:27Is driving still normal?
12:29He's probably trying to get to a certain place where he will have a certain amount of protection.
12:33Yeah, he's seen me now, he's put his address on.
12:38Still not stopping though.
12:39I never know what I'm ultimately going into.
12:44Is this his home address?
12:48Erm...
12:50Stand by.
12:58Put your arm down.
12:59Alright mate.
13:00I'll be alright with you.
13:01Sorry, I was just pulled up here.
13:03Yeah, I'm alright.
13:04Let go of me dog.
13:05I'm not taking cheese.
13:06Alright.
13:07Let go of me dog.
13:08I'm not taking cheese.
13:09It's honestly safe.
13:10It's just a dramatic...
13:11It's a misunderstanding.
13:12But I need to speak to him.
13:13All I want is my phone.
13:14Alright.
13:15Give me my phone.
13:16Give me my phone.
13:17You come with me, nobody's having anything at the minute.
13:18You are driving intoxicated.
13:19Nobody.
13:20Back off.
13:21Back off dog.
13:22Can I have my phone please?
13:23Can you back off please?
13:24Yeah.
13:25You just stay there.
13:26Alright.
13:27Come this, come this.
13:28We'll put you in my car.
13:29We'll put you in my car.
13:30Okay.
13:31He's intoxicated and shouldn't be driving.
13:32Shut up woman.
13:33Right.
13:34Yes you are.
13:35It's about to have you owned up to your actions mate.
13:37Oh love.
13:40So he's pinched on me and I'll...
13:42Safe and well noticed I didn't coughed.
13:43Yes you did.
13:44Mate.
13:45Which is your phone?
13:46Mate, that's mine.
13:47That's mine, that's hers.
13:48Yes you did.
13:49Is that your phone?
13:50Yes that's fine.
13:51Yes you did.
13:52Yes you did.
13:53Domestic incidents are really difficult to deal with because
13:55there's two sides to every story and we know that.
13:58And if you're there on your own you get two people screaming at you.
14:03Telling you different versions of events at the same time.
14:07And they almost start fighting again because they're trying to get one over on the other.
14:11Trying to tell you the information.
14:13Right.
14:14Yes.
14:15You're detained at this time because I believe you're a disqualified driver.
14:20What?
14:21What?
14:22Are you a disqualified driver?
14:23No, no, no.
14:24Oh okay.
14:25Well, I can smell alcohol in your breath.
14:26Yep.
14:27You've obviously been driving that motor vehicle.
14:28Yep.
14:29So I'm going to require you to find me a special minute of breath for the purpose of analysis.
14:32Yep.
14:33When I switch the machine on what I want you to do, pull me still around the end of the tube
14:36while I'm on continuous breath until I say stop.
14:38Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
14:41And stop, stop.
14:42Stop, stop.
14:43Ah, lovely.
14:47That is all.
14:5037?
14:51What?
14:52Okay mate, you failed the roadside breath test with the result of 37.
14:55Yep.
14:56So I'm arresting you for driving whilst over the prescribed limit.
14:59Yep, of course.
15:00You do not have to say anything but it may harm me to certainly not mention any questions,
15:02something which later I'm in court.
15:03Yeah, do you know what?
15:04If I knew I was overlooked, my dad died when I was five recently driving.
15:07Oh God.
15:08I've literally had two of the some uncomforting lemonades from the petrol station.
15:11Are you sure you're not a disqualified driver?
15:12No.
15:13I believe you're a disqualified driver.
15:14No.
15:15I will just check.
15:16You are disqualified until...
15:17No.
15:18You are disqualified until...
15:19No.
15:20You are disqualified until the 26th of the 4th, 2024.
15:23Yeah.
15:24Yeah.
15:25Yeah.
15:26Yeah.
15:27Sorry lad.
15:28Yeah.
15:29What?
15:30So, I'm further arresting you for driving a motor vehicle whilst disqualified.
15:34What?
15:35Yeah.
15:36The caution remains the same, necessity test remains the same.
15:40Also what's going to happen is I'm going to ask my colleague to seize your van under 165
15:44of the Road Traffic Act.
15:45Oh, I'm joking.
15:46Which means that we'll be taking the van from you to prevent you from using it whilst
15:50you're...
15:51100%.
15:52...not a licence holder.
15:53Oh, mate.
15:54Oh, do you know what though?
15:55The centre...
15:56You know because that van's registered to my old house on...
15:59Well, what does that tell you?
16:01Oh, mate.
16:02Do you know what?
16:03I apologise so bad.
16:04Yeah, that was...
16:05You must...
16:06You must know that you've done something to get your disqualified.
16:07What have you been disqualified for?
16:08I do.
16:09On my kids' lives, I don't know.
16:11As much as they tell me a story of woe in the back of the car, it's in hard evidence
16:17on our police systems when and where and why they were disqualified.
16:22Mate, you two come running round that corner in my van.
16:24I was like, I'm sorry!
16:25Well, you didn't stop, did you?
16:27Oh, damn it.
16:28Well, because I was so close to my house, I thought, just keep going.
16:31Keep going.
16:32Dead slow.
16:33With my hazards on.
16:34Why?
16:35Because I didn't think I was over the limit or banned.
16:37I thought, if I park it up outside the house, everything will be fine.
16:40I genuinely, on my kids' lives, didn't realise I was banned or I would never have
16:44drove my vehicle.
16:45That is gospel.
16:48Hello, I've got a drink driver.
16:50Good job.
16:52After you.
16:54This way.
16:55Yeah, just go and sit on that bench for us, please, buddy.
16:59Final part, mate.
17:02As well as an evidential breath test.
17:04So we'll just wait for our turn in the queue and then we'll get you in.
17:07The man faces questions about the allegations made by his partner.
17:10Right.
17:11Listen to what I'm going to say.
17:12I'm further arresting you for a domestic assault.
17:14You do not have to say anything, but we may have any questions.
17:17We'll switch later on in court.
17:18Anything you do say may be given evidence.
17:20We'll need to interview you.
17:21Get your side of the story.
17:22There's two sides of every story in there.
17:23All right.
17:24And we'll get you booked in.
17:25Just stand there in front of this sergeant here, please, mate.
17:30The necessity for the rest has been to bring him to this police station to do the evidential
17:36breathalyser procedure and later on to interview him about that domestic assault.
17:41Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, stop.
17:48Excellent.
17:49Grab a seat.
17:54Unsurprisingly, 27.
17:55The man's blown under the legal drink drive limit of 35.
17:5913, 27.
18:01Right, we'll get out of here.
18:02Yeah.
18:03But still faces prosecution for driving without a licence.
18:06Do you know we can't do that at all.
18:07Once they are disqualified or once they've had the licence taken off them, they still don't
18:13follow the rules and they still don't take any responsibility because they continue to
18:18offend.
18:19And I find that really frustrating.
18:21Yeah, of course you can.
18:22Two blankets.
18:23All right.
18:31Yeah, Ford Connect white van.
18:33There are nearly four and a half million vans on Britain's roads.
18:37We've got a suspicious vehicle parked outside.
18:40Commercial premises.
18:42And works vehicles are often targeted by thieves.
18:46Attempt theft from a van.
18:47Possible clone.
18:49With a van in the UK getting broken into every 23 minutes.
18:53From my name, I've got any mobiles, please.
18:54We can start making the way.
18:55We've got a report of a burglary.
18:56Vehicle in question stolen.
18:57Directed to the travel not known.
18:583-6, I've got 28.
18:59Near Derby, PC Paddy Shambrook and fellow traffic cops are on alert for a suspect white van.
19:00So, we've just had a report of a ram raid coming in.
19:01And we're just trying to figure out now what route offenders might take it on.
19:02We've got to go.
19:03We've got to go.
19:04We've got to go.
19:05We've got to go.
19:06And we've got to go.
19:07And we've got to go.
19:08We're in the sixth grade.
19:09Okay, thank you.
19:102nd機 hoesies in front of the city, need it.
19:12Just getting any questions from everywhere.
19:13cop ordering is dakid.
19:14We've just got to help.
19:15We've got to go.
19:16Ye Yanoc pas.
19:17And he can't speak.
19:18We've got to go.
19:19We've got to go.
19:21And about to go.
19:22Sweren, that's gone.
19:23He's kept coming 18azos from the city.
19:25And they'll be able to think more and it's big.
19:28The bayousза come in somewhere.
19:30There you go, but...
19:33No they're at the Ren whispering until they did a Ahhopie.
19:34Generally, the ram raiding is done by organised criminals.
19:39They'll steal the vehicle, change the plates on it,
19:42or they'll very quickly just use that vehicle
19:45that they've stolen earlier that night to do the ram raid
19:48and then get away again quickly.
19:53Yeah, it's more than likely to just go ashboard at 8.38, haven't it?
19:59Yeah, I've been carried on at 8.38.
20:02On the other side of Derby, PC Nick Rice is also on the lookout.
20:06I think I would have caught it up by now if it was coming this way,
20:09but I've got absolutely nothing.
20:11It is really annoying when you're searching around.
20:14There's just no sign of them.
20:16It's like they just vanish into thin air
20:17or they've got an invisible cloak on or something.
20:25Approaching the city, another unit spots the van.
20:32Three seconds, I'm at the exit on the 8.38, stinger set up.
20:35Paddy covers a possible escape route with a stinger.
20:38We've got vehicles behind it at the moment.
20:41We're just trying to work out whether to do...
20:44Try and push it off on a certain exit for a stinger.
20:47When you hear a job coming in like a ram raid or a pursuit...
20:54Back in the car.
20:55...the heart rate just goes up that little bit more.
20:58Back in, back in.
21:00Criminals that are caught in the act of driving and getting away from a crime scene
21:05can often be the most dangerous we deal with.
21:08It's come off on a roundabout, but I couldn't hear which one.
21:15Other units are now behind the white transit.
21:18Approaching the roundabout.
21:21Out the roundabout.
21:23On the roundabout.
21:24And it's the first person to the surface of someone.
21:28Into the...
21:30Yeah, got it exactly.
21:32As officers move in for an arrest...
21:50Vehicle stopped, it's looking like it's on false plates.
21:53Paddy's playing catch-up.
21:54Yeah, receive what's here. Pop the reg, please.
21:56So we're just running the VIN to work out what the correct reg plate is
22:01and find out the true identity of the vehicle.
22:04Yeah, that's the area.
22:10This might have been telling you an arrest on suspicion of burglary.
22:12The reason for that is there's been a report of burglary at premises in Derby
22:17with the vehicle mentioned, and we suspect that this vehicle and you were involved in that.
22:21I'm going to search you. Have you got anything on your... anything like sharp or anything like that?
22:24I don't know weapons.
22:26While Paddy searches the suspect, Nick checks the van.
22:30We've got numerous sets of plates in here.
22:32So he's obviously planning on either doing more jobs or trying to evade us by putting different plates on.
22:39On clearing plates. We've got that van back.
22:41And there's every likelihood that we have disrupted some other crime happening tonight.
22:46Yeah, from Tango 39 there's electric tools and chains in the back as well, consistent with the report.
22:54Power tools. Oh, there's your chains.
22:57Van pulled some doors off a storage container by the signs of it with these chains.
23:02And it's got what looks like all this stolen gear inside.
23:08There might be something in there, but nothing dangerous.
23:10There's a wallet and stuff like that.
23:13Oh, that'll be good.
23:15Is that under it?
23:17Very small amount of what was suspected to be cannabis.
23:20Are you further under arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, namely cannabis?
23:24He's already failed to stop for police.
23:26We know he's been involved with this burglary.
23:29We start searching him and we find cannabis as well.
23:32You know, he's stacking up offences here.
23:34Yes, received. Thank you.
23:36You're also further under arrest for driving a motor vehicle whilst he's qualified and without insurance.
23:40Caution still applies.
23:41He's just committing offences left, right and centre.
23:44You've been found in possession of cannabis.
23:46Yeah.
23:47And you've been driving that motor vehicle.
23:48Yeah.
23:49So I suspect you could be driving that motor vehicle whilst all by the specified limit for cannabis.
23:53Okay.
23:54I'm going to ask you to provide a sample of saliva.
23:55Failure to do so is an offence which you could be arrested for.
23:57Do you consent to provide a sample of saliva for me?
23:59Yes.
24:00I'll get you to stick your tongue out and then I'll swipe this on your tongue.
24:03Stick your tongue out.
24:04One, two, three, four, five, six.
24:08Driving under the influence of drugs,
24:10you are impaired in a similar way to drink driving.
24:14And then this takes eight minutes for the preceded stew.
24:17Your reaction time that you can react to anything is massively reduced.
24:23We're going to go.
24:24All right.
24:25I'll see you in a bit.
24:26All right.
24:27See you in a bit.
24:28Obviously with some of the drugs you can get a confidence boost
24:31and you will try and drive beyond your capabilities.
24:35Right.
24:36Your drug has come back positive for cocaine.
24:39So you're further under arrest on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle
24:43whilst over the specified limit for cocaine.
24:46And you're further under arrest as well on suspicion of driving that motor vehicle
24:49which is suspected to be stolen.
24:51Been a good job.
24:52Got the stolen van back, stolen property back.
24:54Got a male detained.
24:56Obviously he's been disqualified previously by a court.
25:00And obviously he's driving under the influence of controlled drugs.
25:03So he's a high risk road user who's off the road.
25:05So I feel good about that.
25:07He's done this before.
25:08So it's definitely a good one to have locked up.
25:10And we'll be able to just check each plate.
25:12See if he can tell us any more information about where that van's been.
25:15A tidy little job really.
25:20Coming up.
25:21One running.
25:22The van.
25:23Suspected transit thieves on the run.
25:25Officer with a tanger!
25:26Stealing to order.
25:28Stolen somebody's van.
25:29Ripped it apart and using it for whatever they want.
25:32And a banned van driver.
25:34Put a taxi in my car.
25:35Refusing to learn his lesson.
25:37You only went to court two weeks ago and now you're driving again.
25:58In the Midlands, a stolen white transit van's caught on CCTV.
26:02It's being used to burgle thousands of pounds worth of cable drums from a telecoms depot.
26:18The thieves split up and make off in a second vehicle.
26:27I'm assuming it's site security.
26:30The alarm monitor.
26:32The CCTV monitor.
26:33We're not on site.
26:38Derbyshire's control updates units on alert for the suspect van.
26:42White van.
26:43Two down to the roof.
26:44Three cable drums.
26:46Three offenders.
26:47No mention a weapon.
26:48Damage is important to get in.
26:50Tons of banning.
26:51The convoy is at the end of the year.
26:53We'll just go off and have a look around.
26:56PC Rebecca Callan is among the traffic cops keeping a look out.
27:00You can hide a lot in the back of a van.
27:02If they want to go out and steal something, they've got quite a lot of space in the back of the van, haven't they, compared to a car?
27:08Minutes later, there's news of a possible sighting.
27:14There's been two vehicles hitting northbound within seconds of each other.
27:19We've got markers on from last night.
27:21Flash it's morning involved in a burglar in cable set.
27:24There's anyone in that direction.
27:25I'm going to start heading towards the M1.
27:26Obviously it's likely stolen from somewhere.
27:27Further up the motorway, Paddy Shambrook joins Bex on the hunt for the suspect van and a black BMW.
27:43From 1-1, I'm at 29 now.
27:46Where are you Paddy?
27:47They're right in front of us on the motorway.
27:57They look like they're still travelling together.
27:59They're amongst other members of the public.
28:02So how are we going to safely bring these to a stop?
28:05I'll join you now Paddy.
28:15Committed, committed M1 northbound between the slips at the moment.
28:18And in front of that is the BMWs.
28:22Yeah, the team was thinking if us three take one of the vehicles and if you get three trapping cars to take the other one.
28:30It's very difficult to stop two vehicles at the same time.
28:35Really you have to decide which one you're going to go for.
28:38We're in lane three.
28:40Speed is 66.
28:42Yes, did we say we had anything up front though could bring them onto a stop or not?
28:46Bex and Paddy prepare to box the van to a stop.
28:50Look at Stinger, northbound opposite, it's 31.
28:54While other units cover motorway exits.
28:57Paddy, do you want to try and put a follow me on and I can stay behind them if they don't?
29:04Yeah, two points.
29:06It's got lots of cable inside, it's going to be really heavy which sort of changes tactics.
29:11Put the follow me on.
29:14Got the BMW directly behind me, there's no reaction at the moment.
29:18Bex, have you got the vows in front of you?
29:22Yes, yes.
29:24Is there anything in between us?
29:28Negative.
29:29Yeah, two points.
29:31There are speed pilots here.
29:36I'm indicating lane two, I've got a follow.
29:39Indicating lane one, I've got a follow.
29:41Van's coming past you Paddy.
29:45I'll get a follow and me in front of the van.
29:49The danger is that either the van fails to stop or the BMW fails to stop and causes carnage.
29:57Van's just come to a stop on the M1.
30:00Yeah, he's running.
30:01Yeah, he's running.
30:02Yeah, he's running.
30:03Yeah, he's running.
30:04Yeah, he's running.
30:05Yeah, he's running.
30:06Come on.
30:07Officer with a taser!
30:09Run after him, drawing my taser.
30:12What's happening Paddy?
30:14I've got a driver for van.
30:19I don't know where BMW's gone.
30:21So the BMW's not with you?
30:23No, negative.
30:24I've gone after this driver I've got here, a taser.
30:28So I put my foot down, go and try and find it.
30:34As Beck searches for the BMW.
30:40Put your hands up.
30:41Yeah.
30:42Have you got anything on you?
30:44No.
30:45Backup arrives for Paddy.
30:47Right, just open your patterns up like that so I can see them.
30:50Are you going to be all right with me, mate?
30:52Yeah, yeah.
30:53Turn around, mate.
30:54Put your hands on your head.
30:55Mate, we're going to put some handcuffs on.
30:58You'll be all right.
30:59See you back.
31:00Have a seat in there, brother.
31:02Yeah.
31:05All right.
31:06While the van driver faces questions about the cable theft at the police station,
31:10Bex is looking for accomplices.
31:15There you go.
31:16Oh, he's going to have gone that way, isn't he?
31:18The BMW was registered to Doncaster.
31:23So I knew it would be going up the M1 and the M18.
31:28Nowhere to be seen now.
31:30It's...
31:31I don't think it's come along here.
31:33Although it had a couple of minutes head start, so...
31:35But never saw it again.
31:37Hey, can you let us start the auction now? We've lost the BMW. They did have some units.
31:45Bex joins Paddy to search the suspect van.
31:48Oh, wow.
31:53Paddy, there's still an address.
31:55Look at this.
31:56There's still an address in the sat-nav.
31:59Right.
32:00It's still turned up. There's still an address.
32:03What's the address on?
32:06So we'll just watch it while we're...
32:07The sat-nav has still got its destination programmed in.
32:12So there's an inquiry there to make about the destination address
32:16in terms of its links to crime
32:18and why are these people going back there?
32:20There's a cable that belongs to BT.
32:23So it'll mean that the van's overweight as well.
32:27And, yeah, high-value stuff in there that they've stolen.
32:30These weigh half a...
32:34These are half a ton each, it says on there.
32:36Yeah, it's all in half.
32:40The driver of this vehicle is already wanted for fail-to-appear,
32:44for weapon offences and disqualified driver as well.
32:51This is how they turn it on, with the screwdriver.
32:55That's basically the ignition on it.
32:58Stolen somebody's van.
33:01Ripped it apart and using it for whatever they want.
33:07He's committing crime and attacking people's premises.
33:11So I was really, really pleased to get him caught and off the road
33:16and the opportunity to be put in front of a court
33:19and to be dealt with for those offences.
33:21It feels really good.
33:22That's why we come to work, is to try and catch these people.
33:25Coming up, a repeat offender.
33:30He's absolutely brick in it.
33:32If you look at his hands, so nervous.
33:35Maybe heading back to prison.
33:37We've not even got to the eight minutes yet
33:39and it's still showing positive for cocaine.
33:41Proceed.
33:42We're back to you, Jack.
33:43Some estimates suggest van drivers are less likely to have a clean licence compared to other motorists.
33:53I'll go to the other side.
33:54I should be able to pick him off.
33:55Proceed, thank you.
33:56Which is why traffic cops Dan Mitchell and Jack Pressland look out for suspect works vehicles.
34:06There's a bloke who's got a revoked driving licence or a disqualified driving licence.
34:13Just pass me the reds again, please, on what vehicle I'm looking for.
34:19A little white combo van.
34:20It's just where it's hit.
34:21I thought I was just making me think, there's gotta be around here somewhere.
34:26You do find a high portion of van drivers in vans because, A, they can be hidden a bit more
34:53because the hire and, B, that it's their day-to-day work, they need to drive the van to earn a living.
35:00See if you can position yourself.
35:02Maybe up at them shops a bit further up.
35:05Yeah.
35:06Sometimes I think they just get a bit cocky that, oh, they're in a van, they're not going to get stopped.
35:12It's just like any person in a van going to work, so they just carry on.
35:16Waiters on.
35:21Should've come by now, I'd have thought.
35:28Just with the information we've got this time, there's obviously a disqualified driver.
35:33He's got a number of driving convictions and he's a little bit anti-police with his violent markers towards us.
35:42So, lack of respect for authorities, I'm not expecting him to do a compliant stop.
35:48There we go.
35:55Contact, contact.
35:57Vehicle's two up, we've got one vehicle for cover.
36:04Heading towards the roundabout, standby.
36:07So, first of first.
36:14And then left, left, left, standby.
36:20I'll take front's end off, Jack.
36:35Nickel stop, no damage.
36:37There's someone driving this car, mate.
36:38You're disqualified.
36:39You got a licence?
36:40Mate, be honest with me.
36:41You got a licence?
36:42No.
36:43No.
36:44We'll take a seat in my car.
36:45Mate, I'm going to take hold of you.
36:46You're not going to cuff you out like that.
36:47We'll just go and get it sorted.
36:48Yeah, yeah.
36:49Disqualified drivers continue to drive is annoying for me.
37:02My insurance goes up every year and that's because these drivers just don't care.
37:06We suspect that you're a disqualified driver.
37:08You just confirmed.
37:09Yeah.
37:10Let's do some checks, mate.
37:11Whose car is it?
37:12My brother's.
37:13Your brother's.
37:14Does he know you've got it?
37:15Yeah.
37:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:17Are you sure?
37:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:19Just check how many disc walls he's had.
37:20If it's strike three, then we'll have to take him in.
37:22So, let's have a look at your driving history then.
37:232017.
37:24You got 12 months disqualified.
37:26You got four weeks imprisonment in 2020.
37:27Then you got, 2021, you got disqualified for 12 months.
37:50Then you got disqualified again in 2023.
37:52Yeah.
37:53He's not learning this lesson.
37:54lesson is just continuing to offend get another disqualification so end of the day we're sick of
38:00it yeah we're safe thank you we're going to start arresting people and they can have the day in
38:03court the next day and lose a license quicker or go to prison he's absolutely brick in it if you
38:09look at his hands they are all over the place so nervous as a repeat offender the band driver may
38:17be facing another custodial sentence you only went to court two weeks ago and now you're driving again
38:23first of all i did it and what did they give you at court you say disqualification a favor
38:27disqualification and 180 hours community service yeah you're gonna end up going to prison mate for
38:35it have you drug swiped him i've not drug swiped him i've got one yeah i've got one do you use drugs mate
38:43lean forward for us stick your tongue out oh lovely oh sorry mate what drugs do you use mate
38:48cocaine when was last time you used it yeah okay it's obviously been out working and
38:56doing bits oh the bloody hell do you work with a bit of a painter and decorator
39:05hope he's not halfway through a job
39:09sorry mrs miggins want to get someone else to do your painting
39:13mate we've not even got to the eight minutes yet and it's still it's showing positive for cocaine
39:21so you're under arrest for providing a positive roadside test for saliva for cocaine okay so section
39:285a drug driving he's he's got intoxicants in his body that are affecting how he's thinking so
39:34his stopping distances aren't going to be the same he just poses a massive risk whether it's to other road
39:39users or people just walking down the street i'll go back down to a police station now where he'll get
39:45processed we'll take bloods from him send them off for analysis and hopefully he's got a further
39:51length event if not a little bit more prison time to just come out so one for a man i would imagine
39:56due to his history so yeah good job very good job
40:00so charge with the diswall and the and bail for the drugs no insurance yes i think he thinks he's
40:16getting out but he's provided his blood sample uh with the nurse uh to get tested to see what level
40:23he's over the prescribed limit mate i'm quite straight talking okay we've obviously discussed about
40:29obviously you you're on your suspended you're on that you're going to be kept for the driving
40:33offenses mate i'm not going to you because there's no point is they uh so you'll be kept for them two
40:37offenses and you'll be bowed for the drug driving so you go to court it morning mate i'll get your
40:41decision won't you and where's darby play i'll play tonight don't they but i'm sure if you ask they'll
40:48tell you to score nobody wants to watch darby anyway saved you saved you some heartbreak
40:56sometimes you try to have a bit of banter with them try and relax the situation but he's uh he's
41:02not liking the darby jokes one bit this way mate so the gentleman's been remanded for court in the
41:08morning got a offending history which puts other road users at risk so we kept for the morning court
41:14where a district judge will decide his punishment and see if he'll be allowed back out uh yes please
41:19mate i'll get you some flip-flops if you want some when someone's got multiple disqualifications on the
41:24driving license it just shows a clear disrespect to the courts if they carry on doing it they just
41:29deserve to go to prison take care mate
41:40there are more vans on britain's roads than ever before for the traffic cops stopping criminals
41:46and offenders from using works vehicles is a continuous challenge we all like to think that
41:52we're going out and making a difference every day we're there to do a job we don't make things
41:57personal it's not personal to us it's our job to come out there and find these people and gather
42:01the evidence and put them before the courts and it's all in the interest of keeping our roads safe
42:07and getting criminals off the roads
42:12it's really frustrating seeing people using the roads every day whilst they're disqualified from driving
