00:00Federal appeals court rules in favor of pro-life centers in case against New York.
00:05A.G. Letitia James.
00:07In a closely watched special election, Republican Matt Van Epps defeated far-left Democrat Afton Bain in Tennessee's 7th District,
00:15shutting down hopes of turning the deep red seat blue.
00:19With 95% of votes counted, Van Epps secured victory with 53.9% to Bain's 45%, reinforcing Republican strength in the district.
00:28Bain, a self-described radical, ran a campaign that often clashed with Tennessee's traditional values.
00:35She drew criticism for mocking country music, supporting gender transition procedures for minors,
00:40and making controversial public statements following the tragic Covenant school shooting.
00:45Her comments and activism energized progressives but alienated many local voters.
00:50Despite heavy financial backing from National Democrats, including support from Al Gore and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,
00:57Bain was unable to overcome the district's conservative base.
01:01She outraised Van Epps, bringing in over $1 million in just weeks.
01:05However, Van Epps benefited from more than $1 million in support from MAGA, Inc.,
01:10along with direct backing from President Donald Trump through rallies and last-minute outreach.
01:15The election followed the resignation of Representative Mark Green,
01:18who had previously carried the district by a 20-point margin.
01:21Democrats believed the special election and lower turnout gave them a rare opportunity,
01:27but Republican organizing proved stronger.
01:30House Speaker Mike Johnson also campaigned for Van Epps,
01:32and the win helped reinforce the GOP's narrow House majority, now at 219 to 213.
01:39The result sends a clear message that national Democratic messaging still struggles to gain traction
01:44in heavily conservative regions.
01:46Van Epps now takes office as the new congressman for Tennessee's 7th District,
01:51marking another high-profile setback for Democratic efforts to flip red state seats through progressive candidates.
