It's official: Julia Roberts' time in front of the cameras on Amazon's 'Homecoming' has come to an end.

00:08Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Julia Roberts will not be returning to her role in

00:12Homecoming, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe.

00:15Roberts' initial deal for Homecoming, the star's first TV series regular role, was for a one-season

00:20commitment based purely on the Amazon drama's creative storyline. But even though we will no

00:25longer see her as Heidi, a caseworker at a secret government facility, she will still serve as an

00:29executive producer alongside showrunner Sam Esmail.

00:32It remains to be seen if any other major cast members depart the series for season 2, or if any of the

00:37other freshman stars including Stephen James, Bobby Cannavale, Shay Wingham, Alex Kapovsky and

00:42Sissy Spacek will return. Amazon and Universal Cable Productions declined comment.

00:47Leading up to and throughout Homecoming's November launch, Roberts remained coy about reprising her

00:51leading role as Heidi, and when pressed on her season 2 status in November, the Oscar-winner told

00:56THR that she wasn't prepared to confirm or deny her involvement one way or the other.

01:09The Homecoming to proceed with its second season without Roberts, says Heidi, represents a big

01:13departure from the source material, namely the Gimlet Media podcast on which the series is based.

01:18In the podcast version of the story, Heidi spends the entire second season searching in vain for

01:22Walter, played by Stephen James in the Amazon version. According to Esmail,

01:26we've deviated from very much of the podcast, so season 2 of the podcast doesn't really have

01:31anything to do with the way the show is going. We're working on a second season, but we have a

01:35very different trajectory for our show.

01:37Meanwhile, season 2 will further explore the storyline that was teased in the season 1

01:41finale post-credits scene. Viewers witnessed Colin Belfast, played by Cannavale, squaring off with

01:46Audrey Temple, played by Hong Chao, and Audrey calming her nerves with a mysterious medicine after

01:51the encounter. The scene suggests that there is still plenty to explore in the world of

01:55Homecoming, even without Heidi and Walter as the central characters.
