What Statement Will the Texans Make in Kansas City?

Sunday night in Kansas City feels like one of those true statement games — but which statement will matter most?

00:00the week headed towards sunday when the texans will face off against the kansas city chiefs

00:04and what's funny is for me um i heard sean mentioned this earlier in the morning i i'm with

00:10him this game i don't have the same levels of anxiety wrapped up into this game as i thought

00:16i might have earlier on in the year but so there's like a lot more of a feeling of excitement for me

00:21than there are any nerves and i feel like some of that is because it's an opportunity to be like a

00:27real a real statement game for these texans going in yeah look sometimes i uh and just sometimes

00:33and sean you know it's not like a scary game in terms of you know what the the team that you're

00:41facing but i think sometimes beating the uniform matters i i think really you know college pro

00:47you know you went into kansas city uh with all the the smoke from the you know from the tailgates and

00:55the barbecue wafting over the stadium and the crazy fans and that's patrick mahome standing over

01:00there and that's travis kelsey you know and that's that chief's defense and and chris jones and all

01:06that that's not the same team that's a team that you can and i believe should beat but it's it matters

01:12that you're beating that uniform you know sometimes that just you go and you know the aggies went into

01:17to uh south bend and beat notre dame a really really good notre dame team you said that on purpose

01:23it mattered as much to beat that uniform in that building right uh for them to to be vaulted into

01:29uh you know into the stratosphere that they that they ended up being in uh so that that's where i

01:34am with this i think it truly is a statement type game pardon the cliche uh but but but that's that's

01:40about as big a reason as any but i think there's other reasons why it's it could be a good statement

01:45not just going into kansas city going into kansas city when it's 20 degrees time and place that's the

01:50forecast you know and and going into kansas city you know with a team that's won four straight you

01:55could we could win five straight and the other teams that you're going to face in the postseason

01:59potentially the teams that are leading in the afc buffalo new england denver cold weather places

02:06and by the way pretty pretty significant uniforms you know it matters to beat the uniform yeah no i'm

02:13i'm 100 with you there um and i i would like to take a step further because i started the week

02:18talking about you were going to hear reginald attula use the words time and place a lot this

02:23week and it's because of that right it is sunday night sunday night football get ready for carry

02:27underwood right 720 in kansas that's another part of in december right like there's the prime time

02:33aspect of it but there is the fact that this is i've always marveled at the fact that the nfl was

02:39built for almost like two different portions and we've had a fascination with throwing the football

02:44in the league and everything and what ends up being successful in that portion of the year where

02:50it's like the fall and it's still manageable and what ends up being successful in the winter when

02:56you are playing for you know real important games see their breath it's just it ends up being somewhat

03:03dinner at least a little bit of a disconnect and it's funny that we don't often make that job but

03:07this is a team for whom expectations are back on on the menu and they want it that way and if that's

03:14the case like you're going to need to be able to show that you can play in these moments especially

03:18because also we've talked about this recipe i want to put it under the circumstances that you

03:23might need to use it right you might need to do it in this type of weather in this type of place so

03:27yeah i think that this is going to be really fun but on top of that the statement also exists is

03:34why we look at the kansas city chiefs and we say that they are not that same team that has been the

03:39boogeyman one thing that they still do clutch time is still it's still a thing with them right

03:44they've been a lot less lucky this year though but patrick mahomes literally is far and away the

03:49best passer when he has like four seconds uh to throw the football that means if he is doing that

03:54thing where he is escaping and trying to create he still does that that's something that i i need to

03:59see you be capable of shutting down right i think that those are the things that i think still exist for

04:04the texans to show yeah we can do this and that's another part of it uh you know as much as you know

04:09we've just been talking about i don't think there is good uh by the way programming note we're going

04:13to talk about the kansas city chiefs at noon uh with nick wright uh you know and uh and at 11 20 we're

04:19gonna have andy clue as we normally do so we'll have a lot of that stuff uh but but i think there is

04:24something even though they may not be as good they still have the the trigger man and uh to beat the king

04:30i mean to be the king you got to beat the king and and and that's that's one of the things you're

04:34gonna have to do are you quoting the wire there no was it's before he never seen the wire no i've

04:39seen a little bit i never was all in but seen a little bit he ain't see it i i just said so uh but

04:45that that first of all that that that saying was well before the wire i don't think so i'm pretty sure

04:50that it originated in the early aughts on the wire with the uh the character in 2001 that's right

04:57omar little said that and it became a thing for the entirety of history and you can't tell me

05:01anything okay or i thought you i thought you might go in order to be the man you got to beat the man

05:07which is it's wrestling which i'm sure our guy sean would enjoy quite a bit yeah five straight is not

05:12a fluke five straight that's the other thing i mean there's so many elements to this uh that uh

05:18can make a statement you went five straight at this point in the season and to your point

05:22with that style because we know if they win how they're going to win i mean

05:26it's not going to be you know 38 to 30 or something like that uh so to you know playoff

05:32type you know style that you have in december 20 degrees against patrick mahomes there's all this

05:38is a statement game to keep going to the cliche but it is and then look i'm leaning on the cliche

05:44that's the cliche segment deal with it um i think there's been a lot of noise around this team and

05:49i'm sure this team is looking at everybody outside including us crazy because like y'all buried us

05:53right which hey lean into that put that on the bulletin board baby if you need it go ahead and

05:58use it but i'm sure they're looking at us crazy but there's been a lot of noise in the national

06:02arena looking at this team particularly the defense but just generally this team and looking at them

06:06like hey y'all y'all looking pretty fine over there y'all looking like the girl in the rom-com that was

06:12quote unquote ugly took off her glass and all of a sudden y'all beautiful right like that's

06:15that's where the texans are uh but if you go out and win this game you put yourself in a circumstance

06:21for now not only are you just like a nice pick you could really go up there and have a home game

06:26yeah and give yourself like a real possibility of achieving the goals like not just being

06:31a pretty and sexy pick to make yeah but actually setting yourself up for success getting into those

06:36playoffs and from a national perspective like we we've talked about it we know it we're close to

06:41this team we see it better than any anybody else we've talked about what they can be this year

06:46you know there's a few dan erlofsky's out there that are starting to say the same thing

06:50you know dan's got i feel like he was in love with he was getting in fact i need to go ahead

06:54i'll get that audio for you because he said some stuff that i was like okay he is in love with the

06:58tex there's a few of those guys on the national scale but but think about this you just completely

07:04destroy josh allen on a national stage on thursday night football and you back it up with beating a

07:09hall of fame coach and a hall of fame quarterback the whole country is going to be saying all right

07:14all right this is a team to watch and then i think you you said i think you probably said this

07:20with talking about beating the jersey how much do you lean into the superstitions of primetime gishy

07:27right how much how much does that matter to you and seeing this team do it in that particular

07:33circumstance i think it was a thing i don't think it's a thing now uh you know you talk about dan

07:38orlovsky he's you know that defense travels i mean he's right and it's a cliche too but we are really

07:43leaning in uh but but it does travel and there's no there's no intimidation factor there's no bright

07:51lights factor you think they're they're over there saying oh no patrick mahome no they're not

07:55they're not we might be sometimes but they're not no no i and i'm so excited for this game and it's

08:02funny because with all the possibilities of the statements i don't need the statement funny enough

08:06like i think that for me and i imagine for a lot of folks you look at this team and you go

08:11particularly when you have an elite thing like that defense like the storm troop or the swarm

08:15troopers over there right um just get into the get into the playoffs and you can do that without this

08:20game now this game is all like in my brain this game ain't needed this game is all like cherry on top

08:28oh no i disagree i think it's needed uh kansas city kansas city has had your number uh in the regular

08:34season and in the postseason and and i don't care if they're not that's why i say the jersey thing

08:39you know i i don't care you know they're not the same team or don't seem to be the same team

08:43um and then they're not chumps i mean they're you know they still have a shot at the playoffs you'll

08:48you'll end their shot at the playoffs if you beat them uh but but no i i disagree i think it does

08:54matter ultimately you know you just took them out i want to ask about it uh i want to ask how that how

09:00it feels on the other side when we talked to nick right at noon today which i'm sure people are excited

09:04for if for no other reason then when's the last time you got to talk to nick with his team in the

09:07circumstance right like where they are back against the wall you talk about somebody who peacocks

09:12yeah yeah yeah he was pretty much calling that game a practice game remember not pretty much

09:17not pretty much no he did he's pretty explicit in that so i want to hear on this show i want to hear

09:22what the tone is i have a feeling that he not back now i'm that he's like ah warm up scrimm i think he

09:27called the scrimmage yeah yeah yeah yeah so we'll get that uh we'll talk to nd kalu as we do on

09:32thursday's help we're giving away a pair of tickets to the houston hoop showdown that's happening on

09:36saturday keep it locked in that 12 o'clock hour for that giveaway as well just getting going

09:40on a thursday but super excited for for a lot of reasons namely because this texas team is giving

09:45us an opportunity to really dream
