00:01Germany should no longer grant asylum to Syrians now that President Bashar al-Assad's regime has fallen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said.
00:11However, Tarek Allofs, a former Syrian refugee and pro-asylspokesperson, expressed cautions that the country remains unsafe for minorities and women.
00:21After al-Assad's oyster in early December 2024, he initially felt hopeful.
00:26For me, it was the moment of hope, a huge break, that we can build a democracy and a right-wing state in Syria.
00:34Unfortunately, it lasted not longer until we got a sound of reality.
00:41Ahmed al-Sharah, a former al-Qaeda affiliate leader, became interim Syrian president in January 2025.
00:48But many Syrians doubt his commitment to democracy.
00:51That are Jihadists, who then, not long after the attack of the Assad regime,
00:57have started to kill minorities, LGBTQ people and women and to protect in the country.
01:04Allof says that Syria lacks a foundation for reconstruction and that engaging with Jihadists is extremely dangerous.
01:11What weh tut, is that the international community right now versucht,
01:16genau this group with Ahmed al-Sharah right now to legitimize in Syria.
01:22Hauptsache, they have a partner in Syria, with whom you can talk and speak.
01:27But they press their eyes to.
01:29Allof warns of a new wave of refugees.
01:32He criticizes the current refugee policy as unsustainable.
01:36The goal would be to keep people as much as possible to flee from Germany or to flee from Europe.
01:44But it will not work.
01:46Ultimately, people will flee because there are wars and crises in the coming countries.
01:53Returning to Syria is far too dangerous right now, says Alofs.
01:57Europe must put more pressure on the current rulers.
02:00People can only return safely when they feel secure, he says.
02:04The majority of people say, if there is a stability in the country,
02:10then we will go back and build it up and build it up.
02:14And our experience with democracy in the country, also in Mexico,
02:18not only in Germany, but in Europe or in Europe, we will bring it with us.
02:24After 60 years of dictatorship, Alofs dreams of a democratic Syria.
02:30In Germany are around 920 Syrer.
02:33Some politicians say, they should go back and build their land.
02:37But it is in Syria that it is in security.
02:40Therefore must first talk about the Syrian civil society in Germany.
02:45Sonst will follow the next Fluchtwelle.
02:48Diana Resnick from Berlin for Euronews.
