Transcript
00:00I shot the rookie here, and Jay played my student slash player.
00:06He was my coach.
00:07Yeah.
00:08How many years ago was that?
00:09How many years ago?
00:10It was like 20 years ago.
00:11Almost exactly, and now he's the coach.
00:21Well, this was brought to me by producer Javier Ciampa, who also had brought me my last true story.
00:27And when he brought it to me, Jay was involved.
00:29Oh.
00:30But I decided to do it anyways.
00:32Yeah.
00:33In spite of.
00:34I was like, it's all right.
00:35I can do that.
00:36We can work for this.
00:37And so Jay and I kind of spent several months talking about the script and developing it
00:41more and expanding the character, and then Dennis came on board, and then it was just all these
00:47guys followed after it.
00:49Julian plays like the Jay character.
00:51Yeah.
00:52He actually is the troubled youth.
00:53Yeah.
00:54So it's a full circle.
00:55I guess now I got to do a project where I play a coach.
00:57Yeah.
00:58For 20 years.
00:59Yeah.
01:00We'll be in Smithville doing some tennis movie.
01:03Yeah.
01:04Maybe tennis.
01:05I feel like there's some sort of responsibility given my place in the business to have a counterbalance
01:11to the narrative that is commonly out there about Latin people, about Mexican Americans,
01:16about, you know, Chicanos, whatever term you want to describe us as.
01:22And I feel like it's incumbent upon us, people who do ascend to a certain level in the business,
01:27to sort of do something with that and find a platform to bring on, you know, young talent
01:32and tell stories that, you know, sort of we take ownership of.
01:37It's a true story.
01:38Number one, these high school kids, Chicano high school kids in the 50s, you know, that segregation
01:46and discrimination was going on.
01:49There were caddies at Del Rio Country Club, but they couldn't play there, of course.
01:54They built their own golf course in the desert, you know, had one hole and nine ways to come
01:58to it.
01:59And they started a team in high school and they won the state championship at the very country
02:05club where they couldn't play.
02:07And that, you know, for that time, it's just like unheard of.
02:13And it's a great underdog story and it's authentic.
02:19And that's what we tried to reflect in doing it is just to be real.
02:25I fell in love with the story.
02:27I just, if it wasn't for this role, I just want to, I just wanted to watch it or be an audience member
02:32because I, I learned about this.
02:35I didn't even know that this story existed.
02:37And it's just so heartwarming and inspiring.
02:41And, and I love, I mean, I'm just honored to be here with all of these because I think
02:46everyone here is super talented and amazing.
02:50It kind of like resembles even like now, like what, I mean, Joe Trivino, he was a dreamer.
02:55There was obstacles in front of him that he had to face.
02:57And I just felt connected to the struggle, connected to, to the dream that he had.
03:02And then once I found out the cast, I was like, Oh my God.
03:05Like, of course, this is, you know, a dream come true.
03:07And you're an amazing golf instructor.
03:09I will say you gave me some pointers.
03:11I only play once a day to kind of go back to the rookie again, which is not about baseball.
03:18It's about second chances.

03:31We have to make a move."
03:35We have to make a move here.
03:37The good thing, so I can stand.
03:39You know, stuff was...].
03:40There was a selfie when you checked out all of the lid.
03:44So if you had such friends, you missed out.
03:46One.
03:47That's right.
03:48This is so, okay.
03:50I'm excited for watching those videos.
03:51Have fun.
03:52I didn't do all this.
