Newly-appointed Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Hashim Hamzah has pledged to enhance the justice delivery system, emphasising the importance of judges writing grounds of judgment and speeding up court trials. 00:00Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Hashim Hamza took his oath of office as the new Chief Judge

00:06of Malaya, the third highest position in Malaysia's judiciary.

00:11The 64-year-old was sworn in at a ceremony held at the Palace of Justice on Wednesday,

00:17witnessed by Court of Appeal President Datuk Abubakar Jais and Chief Judge of Sabah and

00:23Sarawak Datuk Azizah Nawawi.

00:26Hashim began his judicial career as a Judicial Commissioner on November 2012, before becoming

00:32a High Court Judge in 2014.

00:35He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2021.

00:40At the same ceremony, four Court of Appeal judges also took office as federal court judges before

00:45Chief Justice Datuk Seriwan Ahmad Faridwan Saleh.

00:49They are Datuk Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali, Datuk Che Mohamad Ruzima Ghazali, Datuk Colin

00:55Lawrence Sekirah and Datuk Azimah Omar.

00:58All appointments take effect immediately.

01:01The five had earlier received their instruments of appointment from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim,

01:06King of Malaysia, at Istana Nagara.

01:09Hashim told a press conference after the swearing-in ceremony that his first mission is to monitor

01:15judges to ensure they fulfill their duty to prepare written grounds of judgment, especially

01:20in cases that proceed to the Court of Appeal.

01:23He also said he has to find a way to expedite hearing dates, including the possibility of

01:28requesting for more judicial commissioners.
