David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are out of 'Star Wars' series.

00:00Eighteen months after announcing their plans to make a Star Wars trilogy,
00:03Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have shockingly exited the franchise.
00:10The pair were set to produce the 2022 Star Wars film, the first to come after this year's
00:14Rise of Skywalker. The Thrones duo released a statement saying,
00:22Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a
00:26lifetime and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only
00:31so many hours in the day and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix
00:37projects, so we are regretfully stepping away. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy
00:42said, David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the
00:46journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.
00:51Benioff and Weiss signed a five-year, $250 million overall deal with Netflix back
00:56in August that was initially met with some questions as their commitment to Star Wars
01:00would have meant that their new content for Netflix would have taken at least a decade to
01:05come to fruition. The duo have been in high demand since completing Game of Thrones, which swept
01:09the Emmy Awards this year with 12 wins, including Best Drama, but received a divided response from
01:15critics and fans. The exit of Benioff and Weiss comes as Star Wars is at a crossroads. Abrams'
01:20The Rise of Skywalker out December 20 will close out the Skywalker saga, and Lucasfilm will pivot its focus
01:26to the small screen with a number of Disney Plus streaming shows, including Jon Favreau's The
01:31Mandalorian out November 12, as well as other series in development such as a Diego Luna-led
01:36Rogue One prequel, an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor, and The Last Jedi filmmaker
