00:00Trump to Pardon Former Honduran President
00:02President Donald Trump has announced that he intends to grant a full pardon to former
00:07Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who is currently serving a 45-year sentence
00:12in the United States on drug trafficking and weapons charges.
00:16Hernandez was arrested in Honduras in 2022, extradited to the U.S., and later convicted
00:21in a New York federal court for using his presidential power to help traffic more than
00:25400 tons of cocaine into the country.
00:28Prosecutors said he accepted millions in bribes from major traffickers, including Joaquin
00:33El Chapo Guzman, and described his administration as a narco-state.
00:39Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, saying that many respected individuals believe
00:44Hernandez was treated harshly and unfairly.
00:47He linked the timing of the pardon to the recent election of Nasri Tito Asfura, the Honduran
00:52conservative candidate whom Trump strongly supports.
00:54Trump claimed Hernandez's release would align with a new period of political and financial
01:00success for Honduras under Asfura's leadership.
01:04Hernandez was convicted in 2024 on three counts related to drug trafficking and firearms conspiracies.
01:11Along with his 45-year sentence, he was given five years of supervised release and ordered
01:16to pay an $8 million fine.
01:18Earlier in the week, Trump publicly endorsed Asfura, stating that the two could work together
01:24to confront narco-communists and provide needed support to Honduras.
01:29On Friday, he repeated that message, urging voters to support Asfura and congratulating
01:34Hernandez on what he described as an upcoming pardon.
01:38Trump also warned that if Asfura does not win, the United States will be reluctant to invest
01:43in Honduras, saying that the wrong leader could bring catastrophic results to any nation.
