00:00I am a storyteller in every aspect of my life,
00:03from my career to what I've done in wrestling with films,
00:06being a film producer, being an actor.
00:08And through my tattoos, I tell the story of my life.
00:16If people ask me how many tattoos I have,
00:18I typically say, like, three.
00:20Because most of them are just all connected together.
00:23I consider, like, one big tattoo.
00:25My back, I did in big chunks throughout my wrestling career.
00:28But I had to because I was wrestling so much
00:30that I couldn't take the time needed to let them heal.
00:33I did my back, and I let it set for so long without finishing
00:37that I had to go back and retrace and do my whole back over again.
00:40So my tattoo on my back, I've got to have close to 50 hours
00:44on my back just because I had to go over it so many times
00:47from letting it sit so long and not getting it finished.
00:49If you noticed throughout my career, whenever I got injured
00:52and I was out for two, three months,
00:54I would always come back with new tattoos.
00:57Which the company actually loved because the more new tattoos you have,
01:01the more new action figures you have.
01:03So you can kind of date my wrestling career through my tattoos
01:06and through the tattoos on my action figures.
01:09I talk a lot about Guardians of the Galaxy,
01:11really not just changing my career, but changing my life
01:14because it really just gave me a second shot.
01:16Because when I left wrestling, I literally lost everything.
01:19And I left it to go into acting, but I struggled for about three years
01:22because I just couldn't get work.
01:24I couldn't even get an agent, but I finally, I landed that part.
01:27And it just, after that, I just, my phone started ringing
01:29and I'd never, I've been a working actor ever since I did the first Guardians of the Galaxy.
01:34The makeup process also changed a lot throughout the years.
01:37For the first film, which was the hardest film,
01:39the makeup process typically took about five to six hours to put on the application
01:44and about two hours to take it off.
01:46So I spent most of my day on set, but actually in the makeup chair.
01:51So I was there before everybody got there.
01:53And I was there well after everybody left and didn't get much sleep.
01:57And when I look back on it, I don't know how I made it through that film.
02:00And I was so happy and grateful to be there that I wasn't really looking at it as a hardship.
02:06It was just a huge opportunity for me.
02:08My first tattoo, I immediately break out in the sweat when anybody asks me that.
02:12It's long gone.
02:13I'm, it's not my proudest moment.
02:15But when I was 18 years old and tattoos weren't as common then,
02:20I went to the local tattoo shop, which wasn't a very nice place.
02:23And they typically weren't at that time.
02:25There was this old biker named Rick who gave me my first tattoo.
02:30And it was this heart that looked like it was cement.
02:33And around it, it said, heart of stone.
02:35And I saw it and I thought, yeah, that's tough.
02:39So he said, well, where do you want it?
02:40And I said, well, I want it on my ass because I don't want my dad to see it.
02:44I don't want to get in trouble.
02:46And he did it.
02:47He put heart of stone on my ass and I immediately regretted it.
02:50And I lived with it for years and got razzed so much through my wrestling career.
02:54Take a shower with 20 other wrestlers who are just relentless.
02:57I finally got it covered up.
02:58It was just long gone.
03:00I have a terry blossom tree on my back.
03:02And I said, well, just extend it down and make the roots.
03:04A cover-up.
03:05So that's what I did.
03:05I have the roots of a cherry blossom tree that covered up my heart of stone.
03:09I have a lot of cover-ups.
03:10I think cover-ups are, again, a part of your story, part of your life story.
03:14You know, you have regrets, you make mistakes.
03:16And so you try to fix them as best you can.
03:18And that's what they are.
03:18I'm like, yeah, cover-ups are repairs of mistakes.
03:21This is a cover-up.
03:22That was actually a girlfriend's name.
03:24This is an ex-wife's name.
03:27And my mom always said, don't put a woman's name on you.
03:29And I didn't listen.
03:31And so here they are, cover-ups.
03:32But yeah, living and learning.
03:34So this one, it used to be a team logo.
03:37I was a part of a team of a person I considered a friend and someone I really looked up to.
03:42And then he later came out publicly with some anti-gay statements.
03:46And it turned out to be an extreme homophobe.
03:50And so I had a huge issue with it.
03:52It's a personal issue with me.
03:53My mom's a lesbian.
03:54And I just can no longer call him a friend.
03:56And so I had it covered up with this.
03:57Oh, my most painful.
03:59So that's a toss-up.
04:00That's between my feet, which hurt.
04:02They were torturous in the back of my knee here.
04:04The back of this knee, I actually started drinking in the middle of this tattoo
04:07because my tattoo artist was actually doing it at my house.
04:09And I said, just give me a few minutes.
04:10So I went and took a shot, came back.
04:12And it still kept hurting.
04:13So I went and took a couple more shots, came back.
04:15He got back into it.
04:16And I finally said, dude, you got to leave.
04:20Get out of my house.
04:21So I actually never finished this tattoo.
04:23The other ones were my feet.
04:24They just weren't as big, but they were just as painful.
04:26But I was able to get through these in the sitting.
04:28But they hurt.
04:29They were torture.
04:30So the tattoo that took the longest to heal was actually this one on my elbow.
04:34And the reason it took so long to heal is because my tattoo artist put it on.
04:39And I looked at it in the mirror and I said, that doesn't look right.
04:41So he put the stencil up next to it and realized that he put it on backwards.
04:46He was so nonchalant about it.
04:47He was saying, not a big deal.
04:48We'll fix it.
04:48So what he did was he whited it out and then he tattooed it on again.
04:53So it's like getting three tattoos in one day in an area that's pretty sensitive.
04:57So it swelled out like a balloon.
04:59And it took weeks for the swelling to go down.
05:01But that is by far, it took the longest to heal this tattoo here,
05:04which is a Gracie fighter symbol.
05:06You know, I have some are very personal to me.
05:08And, you know, some are just things I liked when I was growing up,
05:10things I was a fan of.
05:11I have some, you know, Avengers and Guardians, which are personal to me.
05:14But I have Spectre was also very personal to me.
05:17A film I did, James Bond film.
05:18And I have Wu-Tang Clan.
05:20RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan.
05:21The originator of the Wu-Tang Clan actually helped me get my start in films.
05:24Batman just because I love him.
05:25Rockstar because...
05:28Yeah, my favorite tattoo is this one.
05:31This is a portrait of my dogs, my older dogs.
05:33I have three new dogs.
05:34Um, we lost him both to cancer.
05:36She's still with my ex-wife, but she's older now.
05:39But I am going to get a safe room for my newer dogs.
05:41I was always really just taught to be proud of my heritage.
05:43My mom's Greek, my dad's Filipino.
05:45I didn't really have close ties to my family, but I just, even my mom was just always,
05:49made me very aware of who I was, what my background was, to always be proud of that.
05:54And so I always kind of embraced that, being half Greek and half Filipino.
05:57Always very proud of my roots.
05:58And I display it on my body, a Filipino flag and Greek flag and also another Filipino flag
06:03and another Filipino sun.
06:05I think I really embraced it when I was older and when I got to visit the Philippines
06:09and when I got to visit Greece and just kind of, kind of a homecoming feeling,
06:12especially when I went to the Philippines for the first time.
06:14I'm only half Filipino from the United States, but they embraced me like I was 100% Filipino
06:19and I was born and raised there.
06:21You know, that experience is never going to make me feel anything less in my life.
06:26It's just, it's just a dream. Like, it's just so surreal to go there to a country
06:30and have them just treat you like, you know, you're the prodigal son.
06:33I have a few that didn't, a few tattoos that didn't turn out quite the way I wanted.
06:38So I have, you know, I had this one, this raven is not exactly one.
06:41I wanted this raven to look a lot more menacing, but I also have this tattoo here.
06:45And I found this really cool picture that I loved.
06:48And I really always wanted to do this gentleman hooligan, because I kind of always felt like who I was.
06:53I, you know, I'm really from the streets. I grew up poor.
06:55And that was kind of life I knew until I was in my thirties.
06:58But I always consider myself a gentleman as well.
07:00I give a lot of respect to people just because that's just the person I am.
07:04That's how I was raised.
07:05But I found this cool picture and it was Killian Murphy from Peaky Blinders.
07:09And I asked John to alter it so it didn't look so much like Killian Murphy.
07:13And I got it and I thought, okay, that doesn't look exactly like I have a tattoo of Killian Murphy on my thigh.
07:18But the first time I posted it on my social media, all I got was,
07:21Oh my God, you've got a tattoo of Killian Murphy.
07:24Well, yeah, I guess I do.
07:27It is what it is.
07:28I'm a fan.
07:28So, you know, a little embarrassed, but not ashamed.
07:32So Killian, there you go.
07:33Your face is tattooed on my thigh.
07:35I have Winnie the Pooh tattoo on the back of my leg, which I get asked about a lot.
07:42So I did a film called My Spy with a little actress named Chloe Coleman, who is one of my favorite people in the world.
07:48And so we went out on the press tour and at one outlet, we had to play true or false to see how well we knew each other.
07:55They asked Chloe, they said, true or false, Dave has a tattoo of Winnie the Pooh.
08:00And Chloe said, well, I know, you know, most people might think that Dave is big and mean and scary.
08:06So he wouldn't have a Winnie the Pooh tattoo.
08:08But I know Dave.
08:09He's like the sweetest guy ever.
08:11And he's just a big teddy bear.
08:12And I just love him to death.
08:13So he went on and on and said all these great things about me.
08:16And she said, so, yes, I think it's true.
08:18Dave has a Winnie the Pooh tattoo.
08:20And she was like, got the buzzer, wrong.
08:23And she was like, oh, she was so disappointed.
08:25And I was disappointed for her.
08:27And I said, I don't have one, but because I love you so much, I'm going to get one.
08:31So I got a Winnie the Pooh tattoo for my little co-star, Chloe Coleman.
08:35My latest tattoos were my two neck tattoos.
08:37So one is a Blade Runner reference and the other is a Basquiat crown.
08:42Huge, massive fan of Basquiat.
08:43He's by far my favorite artist.
08:45I do have a tattoo shop because it's always been a dream of mine to own a tattoo shop,
08:48just because I love the culture.
08:50I love the environment.
08:51I love sitting around tattoo shops.
08:52I love sitting around barber shops.
08:54I love the conversation that goes on, the camaraderie.
08:56So the name of my tattoo shop is DC Society Inc.
08:59DC has a double moniker for me.
09:02It's I'm from Washington, DC, but it also stands for Dream Chaser,
09:05which I have used that hashtag for years on my social media.
09:09That's kind of the way I look at my life.
09:11I've just chased my dreams no matter what they were, how crazy they seemed.
09:14And, you know, for some reason it seems to work out for me.
09:18Please listen to my questions below.
09:19Buy it right?
