00:00There is great anticipation for this second chapter of Zootopia Due, Zootopia 2,
00:05which arrives almost 10 years after the first movie.
00:09So I was wondering what was the biggest challenge you faced in making the movie?
00:16You know, every single movie is a challenge.
00:19I think something that we try to do at Disney Animation is always raise the bar across the board.
00:23We're really lucky that we have 700 people that work on any number of these films.
00:28Stepping into this one, honestly, it was making sure that Nick and Judy were always at the very core of the stories.
00:35Zootopia is this amazingly fun, entertaining place.
00:39And it's really easy to sort of, you know, chase other shiny objects.
00:43But I think for us going through the story, we wanted to make sure that their relationship,
00:47their story of them overcoming their differences, becoming stronger partners was always front and center.
00:52Yeah, 100%.
00:52The film includes a wonderful homage to The Shining in the movie by Sonic.
00:58I wanted to ask you how you came to it and if there were other similar ideas for homages that you considered and then discarded.
01:09Well, it's funny.
01:10We do put nods to our favorite films.
01:13We're all film nerds at Disney.
01:15We work with 700 film nerds, to be honest.
01:17And so when the idea to do parodies like this, you know, when we have nods to The Godfather in the first one or to horror films, very famous horror films like you're bringing up, our team gets very, very excited about that.
01:29As a matter of fact, the animator animated one of those key scenes in that Shining tribute is the world's biggest Shining fan.
01:36And he actually went into the animation supervisor's office and said, I must be the one to animate this shot.
01:42And he did.
01:43And now he can be so proud of that for the rest of his life.
01:45Yeah, I see.
01:46I think that we were really lucky that most of the Winx actually made it to the final film.
01:50Over the course of the three to five years it takes to make one of our movies, we are constantly reinventing for that entire time.
01:58And so there's a lot of ideas that come in and come out.
02:00And I think the ones, the best ones always rise to the top and earn their way into the final version.
02:05Once again, Zootopia talks about community and quest extents.
02:10So I would like to ask you where you started when imagining the story and the story for this sequel.
02:17And how you think this movie speaks to the world today?
02:21Oh, sure.
02:22Well, let me talk about like where we started.
02:23You know, years ago on the first film, Jared and I had always talked about the idea that there are reptiles in this world.
02:29But that first movie really needed to be about the mammal world.
02:33So that left the very interesting question of like where are all the reptiles?
02:37And then as Jared and I and Yvette were finishing up in Kanto just a few years ago, four and a half years ago,
02:41Jared did a little sketch that says Zootopia 2 and the 2 is a snake, a crudely drawn snake, albeit that.
02:48But it did say like this is a great, and then his mind started ticking along.
02:51But do you want to talk about that?
02:52Yeah, I mean, it's funny.
02:54The first film, we talked a lot about stereotype and bias, and that was such a critical thing that that story tackled.
03:01And we didn't want to tell the exact same story.
03:03We wanted to continue the conversation.
03:05I think that's something that audiences expect from the world of Zootopia is that it holds up a mirror to human nature.
03:12It allows us to explore patterns that we get into to learn from those things.
03:16But through this really fun, entertaining animal package.
03:20And so I think in this story, which, again, really focuses on Nick and Judy, they're very different animals.
03:26They see the world very differently, and they start to worry that that's a problem.
03:30And then ultimately realize, actually, that's their greatest strength.
03:32We wanted to talk about that, not just for their relationship, but for mammals and reptiles and everything beyond that.
03:38I think for us, that's a story that is important to tell today.
03:42But it's also a story that will be important to tell in five years and 10 years and 20 years ago.
03:47So I think it sort of speaks to human nature that this is something that we need to continue to work on.
