00:00I know you love it, but I'm going to send the brakes out. We've got other things to do.
00:09OK. We'll make it easier up on a proper lift.
00:12Yeah, exactly.
00:13It's a dual circuit system, isn't it?
00:15Yeah, that's true. Henry, you've left your toolkit lying out.
00:19Oh, is that mine?
00:21Can I just say, my toolkit, as you know, comprises of two things.
00:26A credit card and a mobile phone.
00:30We're back. Oh, I'm loving this.
00:32Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars.
00:35A thing of beauty.
00:36Proper special.
00:37Quintessential Brits.
00:39That's nice.
00:40A Lee Francis.
00:41American icons.
00:43Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:45And Continental Curios.
00:47That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:50We're going to buy them.
00:52Thank you so much.
00:53Fantastic, Ludo.
00:54Sort them.
00:55It's the sunroof.
00:56No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:58And sell them for a tidy profit.
01:01Are we really the money?
01:03This is Sheddenberry's Classic Cars.
01:11We're on our way to rugby.
01:13And Fuzz is in a grump.
01:14You got me down here in the morning, and then you told me where we're going.
01:23We're going to just outside rugby to go and see Mark.
01:26Oh.
01:27Who lives?
01:28Yeah.
01:29Ten minutes away from my house.
01:30I could have had a lie-in.
01:32Yeah.
01:33I'm really sorry about that.
01:34You didn't want to drive, did you?
01:36No.
01:37Thanks so much.
01:38Because he's local to you.
01:39Yeah.
01:40I know you don't know him, but what's he got?
01:42I don't know him.
01:44But he's something of a wizzo engineer.
01:47Oh, is he?
01:48Yeah, he is.
01:49I think he has a nice line in sort of hand-built race cars and the like and stuff like that.
01:55Race cars?
01:56Bit of an engineer.
01:57That's expensive stuff, mate.
01:58Yeah, he is.
01:59Hopefully he's got some other stuff.
02:00I can't see you buying a period race car.
02:03Financially, I don't think we can.
02:05Can we?
02:06No.
02:07We haven't made enough money for a while.
02:09Anyway, just outside of rugby, that's good enough for me.
02:13I mean, maybe, on the way back, you can drop me off.
02:16Oh, wait a minute.
02:17No.
02:18My car's in yours.
02:19That's such a shame, isn't it?
02:20You're going to have to drive me home.
02:26Whether we come back with a race car and an empty wallet to cheer Fuzz up, who knows?
02:30But rugby, here we come.
02:36Mark?
02:37Yes?
02:38I can see a grey Fergie, I can see an Albion, but then again I can see sports cars and things.
02:44And bikes?
02:45And bikes.
02:46Yeah, go on then.
02:47Well, it's addictive.
02:48I know.
02:49Once you start, you can't seem to stop.
02:51Is that really?
02:52Yeah.
02:53And you set out to make room for something, so you sell a few, but you generally don't sell and you just keep collecting.
02:59Yeah, you just build a bigger shed.
03:00Yeah, you have to buy somewhere with a bigger barn.
03:02So, what is for sale, though? Is everything else for sale?
03:05Well, there's one or two for sale.
03:07Well, look, I'll tell you what we'll do.
03:08We'll have a rummage about.
03:09I might call you in and ask you on some things that we're not sure about.
03:13Yeah.
03:14And then at the end, hopefully, we'll have a haggle.
03:16Yeah, that's it.
03:17Yeah, we're looking forward to that bit.
03:18Fantastic.
03:19Cheers, Mark.
03:20All right, lovely jubbly.
03:21Brilliant.
03:22Okay, well, I think we'll start.
03:23I want to start down there.
03:24Okay.
03:25I've just got this feeling that downhill's always good.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Yeah, it's like my career.
03:28Yeah, come on.
03:29You're certainly going that way.
03:30Yeah, yeah.
03:31Watch it.
03:32See you in a minute, Mark.
03:33Look at that in there.
03:34Look at what?
03:35The DB24.
03:36Oh, I don't like them.
03:37Now, look at this.
03:38They're the ugliest Aston Martin I've ever seen in my life.
03:39What?
03:40Are you out of your mind?
03:41I don't like DB24s.
03:42The Aston Martin DB24 was the four-seater version of the classic DB2, though not as fast as
03:59its predecessor and often overlooked.
04:02Today, DB24s sell for £200,000 upwards.
04:07Why have they suddenly gone through the roof?
04:10This has been a late blossomer.
04:12Everybody's looking at the DB4s, fives and sixes.
04:15Hang on.
04:16We're talking ugly duckling turning into a beautiful swan.
04:18Yeah.
04:19And suddenly, everybody realises that these have turned into swans.
04:23Apart from me.
04:24Honestly, these are beautiful.
04:26But, of course...
04:27But they're out of our price range.
04:29For something more affordable, he's got a couple of tractors and several trials bikes.
04:34Generally speaking, I think he's into motorsport.
04:37Yeah.
04:38And tractors.
04:39If you're into motorsport, occasionally you might need to pull something out of a hedge.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Especially if I'm driving.
04:46Yes.
04:47Okay, mate.
04:48Well, look.
04:49The DKW's rather nice.
04:50Yeah.
04:51I like that.
04:52But, obviously, we're here for a car.
04:54Outside, there are more tractors and some classic trucks.
05:01He's got a Ford D-Series.
05:03That tyre's like my lungs.
05:05Well, yeah.
05:06At least that can be inflated.
05:07It's going to be bumped up.
05:09Yeah.
05:10A 1975 Bedford TK.
05:13TK was one of the well-beating truck designs of the early 1960s.
05:19Yeah.
05:20And I think in certain far-flung parts of the world, they're still much revered.
05:24And tucked into a container.
05:26Ooh.
05:27Now.
05:28Yeah.
05:29Look at that.
05:30That is a Mark I, isn't it?
05:32It is.
05:331967, 68.
05:35Oh, I quite like these.
05:37Nicknamed Britain's most-wanted van by the Metropolitan Police, the Ford Transit Mark I was hugely popular with both tradesmen and bank robbers.
05:49Several engines and body types were available, enabling it to carry significant loads.
05:55Oh, look.
05:56It's got a pick-up back to it.
05:58It has as well.
05:59That's very nice, actually.
06:00Hang on.
06:01It's a left-hand drive again.
06:02It is, yeah.
06:03But that's okay.
06:04You don't mind a left-hand drive vehicle, do you?
06:06Where's Mark?
06:07Mark?
06:08Where's it come from?
06:10So a friend of mine, he found it in a German wood yard.
06:12Back was loaded up with planks when he picked it up.
06:15Wow.
06:16He brought it back here and we purchased it.
06:17Wow, so you've got it running and everything.
06:19Yeah, it's all up and running.
06:20So is it for sale?
06:21Yeah, it could be for sale.
06:23Okay.
06:24And it carried plenty of planks around before, so he could do a few more, couldn't it?
06:27Yeah, I am a plank.
06:29I was including myself.
06:31More flat pack, apart from a bit of a bulge there.
06:34Yeah.
06:35Yeah, UK registered now, ready to go.
06:36It is a nice one.
06:37Oh, that sounds good.
06:38Hey, look.
06:39Well, look, we've got another shed to go.
06:40Come on.
06:43Mark's main shed is a veritable carnucopia with MGs, Triumphs, and my favourite, a Rolls-Royce
06:51Silver Spirit.
06:52Now, this is a lovely colour combination, isn't it?
06:55Sorry, we've got...
06:56It is.
06:57Trust you to go, this is a lovely colour combination, when actually there is a Rolls-Royce in front
07:02of you.
07:05The Silver Spirit was the last of the hand-built Rolls-Royces, with a powerful V8 engine and luxurious
07:12trim and fitments.
07:16As I get older, I quite like the idea of having a roller like this.
07:22I kind of sort of feel that it's a bank robber done well.
07:26Well, I suppose, yeah, but you wouldn't use one of these to actually rob a bank in, would
07:30you?
07:31No, no.
07:32No, you use a Transit Mark 1.
07:33Yes, that's right.
07:34That's what you'd use.
07:35You want to be able to carry stuff out.
07:36Whereas this is what you buy with your spoils, once they've been laundered a little.
07:41This is the legacy, isn't it?
07:43Yeah.
07:44Of doing rather well.
07:46There's still no sign of all those race cars, but en route to his last shed, we spot something.
07:53Hey now, what is this?
07:56Have you seen the number plate?
07:57Woof.
07:58I have, yeah.
07:59W-O-F.
08:00Yeah, it's a Birmingham issued registration number.
08:02Is it?
08:03Woof, woof in Birmingham?
08:04Yeah.
08:05OK, well look, I'm sorry, we should be looking at cars, but just stopping off here, that's
08:09Villiers 250 pad, maybe it's a Panther or something.
08:12That looks like a nice, probably late 50s, very early 60s bike.
08:16Yeah.
08:17I like it.
08:18Yeah.
08:19Go on then, let's go over there.
08:20Here.
08:21Great.
08:26Wow.
08:27There's some very special cars in here.
08:30Mark's final shed fully lives up to the hype with a collection of classic race cars,
08:35including two Coopers and this fabulous MG.
08:40Mark?
08:41Here, come on in.
08:42Tell me about this, it's amazing.
08:44Yeah, 1934 MG Q-type, one of only eight, first one built.
08:49It would have been a two-seater originally, they all were two-seaters.
08:52Winter of 34 to 35, it was converted to single-seater by Thomson and Taylors.
08:58Right.
08:59To race the outer circuits at Brooklands.
09:01So, what sort of speeds would that have been achieving at the time?
09:04Well, you have a look at the rev counter in there, which was the original rev counter
09:08from when it raced at Brooklands.
09:09It was geared for 24.75 miles per hour per thousand.
09:13And it's revving at about 6,500, 140 miles an hour.
09:17140 miles an hour in that?
09:19Yeah.
09:20Getting on for that.
09:21That would have been utterly terrifying.
09:25I won't bother checking the price of any of these race cars,
09:28or the beautiful four-seater MG Midget next door,
09:32which looks like it's seen a few weddings.
09:36But we have to get something.
09:38Clearly, there's a lot of stuff that's going to be out of our range.
09:41Yeah, well, we can find out.
09:43Yeah.
09:44There was that Transit that I liked.
09:46Yeah, yeah.
09:47We'll see what that's worth.
09:48We could try the D-Series.
09:49Yeah, the D-Series, that looks pretty good as well.
09:52Or Bedford.
09:53This is lovely.
09:54I mean, we can only ask, can't we?
09:56It's getting way out of line.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Shall we go and see Mark?
09:59Yeah.
10:00Come on then.
10:05Where are we going to start?
10:06There's a couple of Bedford trucks.
10:08I know the blue one's a TK.
10:09Yeah, a TK is mine, Laura.
10:11I use it quite a bit if it's been a tipper.
10:13It's quite useful.
10:14It could be bought, but it'd probably carry a bit of a premium.
10:17Would it?
10:18Yeah.
10:19I don't like premiums.
10:20No, no.
10:21I'm not going to talk about the 2.4.
10:23No?
10:24You can.
10:25Well, I do like the 2.4, but I doubt that's for sale.
10:27And I doubt it's within our budget anyway.
10:29No, well, my father bought that 40-odd years ago
10:33when we just recommissioned it.
10:34At the right time.
10:35It's been off the road for 39 years.
10:37Yeah?
10:38The first year it's been back on the road.
10:39Wow.
10:40So, yeah, no, that one's got to stay, that one.
10:42There is a bike in there.
10:43Panther, is it?
10:44How much of that?
10:45Well, well, somewhere around about 2,000.
10:49Okay.
10:50Might be a bit of wiggle room in that.
10:51Okay, mate.
10:52All right.
10:53All right.
10:54Okay.
10:55Now, we opened up a container.
10:56Oh, yeah.
10:57And in there, there was a little transit flatbed.
10:59Yes.
11:00So, is that for sale?
11:01Yeah.
11:02I think we'd need to be somewhere around 6,000, Mark.
11:04For that.
11:05Okay.
11:06What was it again?
11:07Five?
11:08Yeah, 6,000, that.
11:09Yeah, well, there might be a bit of wiggle room in it.
11:12All right.
11:13Unless we have a deal with a bike as well, and we can put that on the back.
11:15Five grand?
11:16Yeah.
11:17No, it might need to be a tad more than that.
11:19What about 5,2?
11:20Yeah.
11:21How about, er, about 5,7?
11:26We're up in rugby with Mark and his eclectic collection of race cars and lorries.
11:45We've bid 5,500 for a Mark 1 transit.
11:49But will he go for it?
11:51You're about to squeeze another 50 pounds each between you, can't you?
11:545,6?
11:55I don't know, mate.
11:56It's time.
11:57Well, I've made him spend a bit of money recently.
11:59Yeah, he has.
12:00And he's looking at me now.
12:01Far too much.
12:02I'll tell you what.
12:03What about if I give you the 100?
12:04All right.
12:05Yeah.
12:06We're having a deal at 5,6?
12:075,6?
12:08Come on then.
12:09Okay.
12:10Well done, Mark.
12:11We're going to talk about a panther.
12:12Shall we load that on the back as well?
12:13No, no, no.
12:14The thing is, is that I believe that that panther, I would think it's nearer the 1,200 quid.
12:19Do you know what I mean?
12:20Yeah, I think we could about strap that on the back for 1,200 pounds.
12:24Has it got a V5, the panther?
12:25Yeah, it has.
12:26Yeah, and the original buff book.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Okay.
12:29All right.
12:30Okay.
12:31A double purchase.
12:32You didn't expect that.
12:33That's a double whammy.
12:34I never, ever expected that.
12:35Yeah.
12:36Hey, Mark, thank you so very much.
12:37What a lovely day.
12:40On the following afternoon, we reveal all.
12:44Have you seen the Transit?
12:45Mark 2 or Mark 1?
12:46It's a Mark 1.
12:47It's amazing.
12:48It's a 1967, 68.
12:49Proper nice.
12:50The colour's just nice as well.
12:51Yeah.
12:52The tyres look good.
12:53Is it all running up and nice and going?
12:54Well, supposedly, yeah.
12:55I love the back.
12:56The back's really cool.
12:57Yeah, it is, isn't it?
12:58Yeah, it's got that.
12:59Oh, that's what it's for.
13:00That bit of scap across the back is so you can lean things up.
13:03Then your planks, yeah.
13:04Ladders.
13:05Scaffle poles.
13:06Is it the case, then, with these pickups, that the pickup is actually more valuable than
13:11the actual van itself, if you see what I mean?
13:13Well, I think, in any case, an early transit is a valuable piece of kit anyway.
13:19And because this one's got an original back on it in very nice condition, I think it's a remarkable
13:26survivor.
13:27Do you know what I think about this?
13:28What?
13:29I think that it looks like a scrap man's vehicle.
13:32It does, actually, doesn't it?
13:33Yeah, yeah.
13:34Coal and Suns.
13:35You know, sort of old iron.
13:37Try that, Henry.
13:38Any old iron?
13:39That's it.
13:40Iron?
13:41Any old iron?
13:42You've got to get it with a bit more of an iron.
13:47Okay.
13:48Iron!
13:49That's it.
13:50That's the one.
13:51Iron!
13:52Perfect.
13:53Can you blow a bugle?
13:54That's what we're going to do, then.
13:55We're going to go and collect iron.
13:57We're going to go and collect scrap.
13:59Okay.
14:00So, look, what I think we should do, obviously, get it going, clean it up.
14:03But I also think we should put some decals, get Pete the sign writer in.
14:07Yeah.
14:08Coal and Suns scrap dealer.
14:09As for the panther with the villiers' lump, it doesn't look as though it's run for a while.
14:14But I'm sure it'll be no trouble for the engine whisperer.
14:17It's late in the day.
14:19Tomorrow, you get working on that.
14:21Yeah.
14:22Right?
14:23And Fuzz and I'll have a look over on the transit, okay?
14:25Yeah.
14:29Next day, we're up with the lark.
14:32Oi!
14:33I just threw it in my head, then.
14:35Sorry, did you?
14:36Yeah.
14:37You've got some cushioning on there.
14:39Look, while Alan's having a fiddle in there.
14:41Yeah.
14:42Yeah?
14:43With the e-motorcycle.
14:44You'll be taking for a test ride.
14:45Well.
14:46I'm just pre-empting that, because I'm just checking the fluids.
14:48Come on then.
14:49Is that ready to go?
14:50Yeah, sure.
14:51Come on then.
14:52All right, come on then.
14:53Yeah.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Yeah.
14:56So our Ford Transit rides again.
14:58What's that?
14:59Have you shrunk?
15:00No.
15:01Why are you so low?
15:02Look, my seat has collapsed.
15:03What?
15:04Has it?
15:05Yeah.
15:06It's lost its stuffing.
15:07And in fact, over one side, so over this side, there's a bit more stuffing.
15:12There's a bit more support.
15:13But on this side, where I think the previous operative of this machine has got in and out.
15:24All the time.
15:25It's broken the seat.
15:27After its incarceration in that container, the good news is our transit runs, but it's
15:34not quite perfect.
15:36What are the problems here?
15:37Your seat is a problem.
15:38The tick-over's a bit high.
15:39Yeah, it is.
15:40Maybe we've got a little bit of steering wonder, have we?
15:41So, yeah, just a little bit, so maybe we can have a little look at that.
15:42It's a transit, isn't it?
15:43Yeah, maybe.
15:44But also, I noticed that the tyres are a bit cracked.
15:45So the steering kind of stodginess, really.
15:46Sort out the bonnet as well.
15:47Yeah.
15:48So that's our shopping list for the transit, but how much does Alan have to do on the Panther?
16:05Look, we've got a problem.
16:06The kick-start spring's broken, and then Henry and Fuzz didn't get the key for the bike.
16:12So he hasn't got the key for the bike, we can't see if the ignition works.
16:15So what I'm going to do is take this cover off and see if I can bypass the ignition switch
16:18to get it to run.
16:19It doesn't appear to have a battery fitted, which is really strange.
16:21But I've had a good look around.
16:22There's no battery at all, so it seems to be direct lighting and direct ignition.
16:25So let's get this cover off and see what we can see.
16:28According to Mark, this bike was last run in 1982.
16:32It looks as if someone has been tinkering with it.
16:35So the first thing I want to do is remove this little cover to expose the ignition points.
16:41I notice it's only got one screw, and that screw is loose as well, which means someone's
16:44obviously been in there before, quite recently.
16:47So the gear lever, oh, which is actually loose, that comes off.
16:51Kickstart is actually bolted on, but the nuts are loose.
16:55I think someone's been in here trying to get this working and given up.
17:02Anyway, that's the transit running.
17:05They're going to have to arrive without me, leaving me here working on this bike.
17:08In fact, we've just returned home, and fuzz is starting on the transit.
17:13Well, we've got a number of little problems with this transit.
17:18So, one thing, we've got this dent right here.
17:23So it would be nice to get that out.
17:25But the trouble is with that is we've got a double skin underneath here.
17:31There's this reinforcement piece that stops this all flapping around at the front.
17:36And so that means that it's difficult to get out.
17:39So I'm going to have to drill some holes and then try and use some drifts just to tap this little dent out.
17:49Fuzz begins by drilling some pilot holes before using a larger drill bit to puncture the inner skin.
17:56Once he's in, he improvises, using the wrong end of a drift, a kind of punch tool, to carefully bang out the dent from the inside.
18:10It takes one more hole and a lot more banging.
18:14I'm not really hitting it that hard. I'm just trying to tease it out.
18:18But after half an hour, Fuzz is happy.
18:29What I'm not going to do is chase this too much.
18:32We've got the dent out a little bit now.
18:34It's kind of less of a crease.
18:36So that's a bit better.
18:37Maybe just rub this down a little bit and perhaps leave it for the next owner.
18:42We'll have to see.
18:43Maybe we'll get a bit of time to fill it.
18:45But if not, it looks a tiny bit better.
18:49I suppose the one thing I ought to check now is, now that we've made it slightly less concave,
18:57does the bonnet actually still shut?
19:03It does actually.
19:05Shuts a little bit better.
19:06Alan, meanwhile, has taken the cover off the Panthers' engine.
19:14He was just about to hotwire it, when he had a bit of luck.
19:18I was about to cut the wires, but I was looking around the workshop and I found some keys.
19:22I thought, I wonder if they're going to fit.
19:23I'll put it in the lock and it didn't quite fit.
19:25It went in, but it wouldn't quite turn.
19:27Alan takes the lock barrel to the lathe to grind it into a perfect fit and then reassembles it on the engine.
19:37What a stroke of luck it was playing these keys.
19:39They fit almost perfect, but now they fit absolutely perfect and the lock works great.
19:43So we've got ignition off, ignition on, it works, how cool is that?
19:49So the ignition switch is sorted, but will it run?
19:53Alan refits the engine panel and mends the spring fitting on the kickstart.
20:00And the kickstart returns, how cool is that?
20:03When he gives it a kick though, his winning streak runs out.
20:08No spark at all, totally dead.
20:10Meanwhile outside.
20:14Are you ready?
20:18The transits engine is also not quite playing ball and won't idle properly.
20:24It's just a bit cold at the moment, but once the choke comes off and I adjust the screw, it just operates on the throttle butterfly.
20:35This engine, the S6 V4, was used in everything from the transit to the Capri.
20:41And even in early models of the Ford Granada.
20:49Fuzz adjusts the tick over screw and the mixture screw and it all sounds much sweeter.
20:54That's quite nice now.
20:59Okay.
21:01I think we'll leave it at that.
21:04Because once we put the air filter back on, that'll just slightly enrichen the mixture and I think it'll be absolutely spot on.
21:12And talk about spot on. Alan's now cleaned the points and swapped the spark plugs and after a quick glug of fuel, he's ready to go.
21:25Right, choke's on.
21:28Let's give it a kick and see what happens.
21:30I feel this is quite exciting, really.
21:31It's either going to work or it's not going to work, but hopefully it will work.
21:34Let's see.
21:39It's definitely fired.
21:40She runs perfect and the ignition switch works.
21:55How cool is that?
21:57Let's go for a second start.
22:10And it's on two cylinders as well. It's running just perfect.
22:13I am so chuffed.
22:14That's been quite a lot of work, but it's been well worth it in the end.
22:17So the Panthers almost fit to prowl, but there's still work to do on the transit.
22:22Our aim is to take it scrapping this weekend, but can we get it ready in time?
22:29That is going to have to be changed.
22:32It's an easy job, but can we get a ball joint for it?
22:40We had a good day yesterday, fettling the transit and our Panther bike.
23:04She runs perfect.
23:05There are still some gremlins to sort out on the transit, starting with a faulty door handle.
23:14Let's have a look inside here, because what we have is a non-functioning driver's side door button.
23:22I think basically the internals of the door button have pushed through and beyond the little lever that they work on.
23:30So I'm going to take the door handle off and see if I can...
23:36Well, actually, maybe I'll just see if I can get a screwdriver up there and just flick it back, because it might just need that.
23:43Let's see what we can do.
23:47It sounds too good to be true, but after a quick jiggle with the screwdriver...
23:51Hold on, if I pull that back...
23:54Ah, there we go.
23:56That's gone in.
23:58Now, just keep it there.
24:00Yes.
24:02So...
24:04Yes.
24:06That is operating.
24:08Brilliant.
24:09Right, all I need to do now is shut the door and see if I can get in from the outside.
24:13The proof of the pudding.
24:14Right, let's see if it opens.
24:17Yep.
24:19Ah, there we go.
24:21You coming out, Bean?
24:23The other issue that Fuzz noticed on our brief test drive was the steering.
24:27I just had this feeling when I was driving this that the steering was just a little bit vague.
24:32So, I asked one of the fellas to rock the steering and looked underneath here.
24:38And what I found was an absolutely terminal drag link ball joint.
24:45So, that is going to have to be changed.
24:48It's an easy job, but can we get a ball joint for it?
24:53While we hunt down a spare, there's one thing we've got to get on with.
24:58A bit of artwork.
25:00So, we've invited Pete the sign writer to come on over.
25:04And just in case it rains on his parade, we've put the transit under cover.
25:09It's a lovely old truck, 1968.
25:12So, we've just got to put a little bit of icing on the cake, I think.
25:15Come on, girls.
25:17Here you are.
25:19You've had a look at the van.
25:20Yep.
25:21I've got this idea, Pete, because we want to go and get some scrap metal.
25:24Right? Okay.
25:25And I kind of, I don't want scrap metal on it. I want colon suns in the normal way.
25:30Okay. Right? Yeah.
25:32Colon suns. Right.
25:34And then I kind of think, salvage.
25:36And it's a nice word, the word salvage.
25:38You've got an ascender, a capital S, a descender, the G.
25:41Is that what the sign writers call it? Ascenders and descenders?
25:43Yeah, I do, yeah. I don't know why I've got it for them.
25:46Yeah, but you're about the only one left.
25:49Pete starts by drawing up his design on paper.
25:52Like that, should be nice.
25:55Salvage, there you go.
25:57Mate, that looks great.
25:59While I take jelly and the top for a walk, Pete gets to work.
26:03First he charcoals the back of his design,
26:05and then he goes over it again with a heavy pencil in order to copy it onto the door.
26:12I guess we are now ready to paint.
26:16Then after laying down a couple of strips of tape to act as guides, he gets to work.
26:21Although it's a lovely old thing and it's in remarkable condition for the age of it,
26:25I think we'll do the lettering just a little bit worn to match the truck.
26:32Pete's chosen a mid-blue for the script to give it a vintage look,
26:37but he's not laying it on too thick.
26:40I'm going to leave it just like that.
26:42I might, Henry might even get a little bit of wet and dry or something
26:47and just give it a little nib off just to give it a little bit more of a wear look.
26:52While our resident Leonardo carries on with the lettering.
26:56Over at the workshop, I've got a present for the Panther boys.
27:00Can I draw your attention to these glorious little batches?
27:04OK, yeah. I bet those were cheap.
27:06Do you know what? They were about 80 quid.
27:0980 pounds.
27:11I don't know why they're so expensive.
27:13They're cast aluminium, aren't they?
27:15Well, they really are nice.
27:17Greens Sand Foundry, it says.
27:19Anyway, look, if we can find some screws
27:21and put those on, give it a clean and put everything back on,
27:26is it ready to roll now?
27:27Ready to go. The gears work clutch works.
27:29I can't wait, man.
27:31I tell you what, I think that's going to be lovely when it's done.
27:36With Alan and Skid getting on with some useful work,
27:39I play an executive role.
27:41Right, let me do the paint work first.
27:43No, please.
27:45Just stay calm for 30 seconds.
27:48What is the trick, Alan, to stay calm?
27:51Because you're the calmest out of all three of us.
27:53Just breathe.
27:55Let it all go over your head.
27:56Don't let them get you down.
27:58And don't let me anywhere near you.
28:02The repo badges are as good as I hoped.
28:08Panther ceased production in 1967, but there are still plenty of spares available.
28:15Mate, even though they were hugely expensive, it's definitely worth it.
28:18That's lovely.
28:21Back in the hangar, Pete has finished the basic design
28:25and is now adding some drop shadows to reinforce the 70s look.
28:29To give the lettering even more of a 3D quality,
28:33he darkens the bottom shadow with a more charcoal grey.
28:37See that?
28:39You see the difference in the two greys?
28:41You will when it's outside.
28:43It's just a little decoration that they used to do in the day
28:45on lorries and everything, and I really like it.
28:50I just really like that look.
28:54As a finishing touch, he paints on a vintage telephone
28:58and some telephone numbers.
29:00It's only taken a couple of hours,
29:02but his work has really lifted the transit.
29:05That is just what we're after, mate.
29:07Look at all that shadowing and that distress here.
29:10That's great.
29:12I love the phone, man.
29:13That's brilliant.
29:14Well, that's the phone in the day, I guess, isn't it?
29:16Yeah, yeah.
29:171968.
29:18Oh, mate, that is fantastic.
29:20That's before the trim phone.
29:21Hey, but that's really good.
29:22Yeah.
29:23Oh, Pete, that's really added value to it.
29:25I can't wait to show the boys.
29:27Our fuzz is going to love it.
29:28And it's great, I think, it's great.
29:29I think I back a little bit of a pipe in there.
29:31It's great for us.
29:33Oh, yeah.
29:34Sparly?
29:36Inspired by Pete, we up the ante on the Panther,
29:37cleaning and polishing every visible surface,
29:38and even giving the front forks a quick shot of rattle can.
29:44shot of rattle can now finally we're ready for our road test for a bike that's been languishing
29:51unloved for years this is a true resurrection oh mate that is a quality motorcycle quite
29:59transformation for a little work isn't it isn't it just hey yeah really lovely i like that it's
30:04a bit different as well i've never seen a panther 250 before well should we see if it goes up and
30:09down the drive let's do it i think you've got to yeah come on then yeah
30:14and we're off our panther predates the transit by about 10 years and it's villiers engine is a
30:22bit rougher than the ford v4 who's complaining though it's just great to get it back on the road
30:28it goes really nicely this it's quite loud though
30:33i'm loving milk pig
30:35for 1200 quid this is a snip
30:43mate it rides nice you pull away very friskily yeah it sounds crisp the gears you know they're
30:51crisp but they're not getting in there every time you've got a sort of hoof them in clutch is dragging
30:56probably yeah it's a bit mate it's beautiful it's really for sale starts runs and rides yeah that's
31:01all you need part sounds the part yeah starts fairly easily yeah what more could we want well
31:07not a lot just some money so the panther's looking good and the transit's looking great
31:14tomorrow after fuzz has sorted the last few niggles we're going to put our transit to work
31:20but will cole and sons turn a profit or will we end up on the scrap heap of life
31:27oh
31:35now look at that two weeks ago we found a vintage ford transit in a container in rugby
31:48around the deal at 56 yeah we tested it shrunk my seat has collapsed
31:57fettled it and adorned it that scrap now after fuzz has spent the morning fitting a new air filter
32:09and replacing the ball joint that finally arrived back and forth lovely that's much better
32:17it's time to get our transit to do what it does best now we can go scrap collecting
32:24we're dropping the side
32:27look at that hey right i'll get in there
32:31our transit is the perfect vehicle for a bit of scrapping starting with our own odds and ends
32:40i can't wait to get this one's in the same condition as you look crusty
32:45this is not wheezy
32:48shut on less of the chat
32:50the flatbed is 10 square meters and has a carrying capacity of two tons
32:56right storage here we come and we're off our mission to make a bit of money from our transit
33:05before we flog it
33:06any old iron that's perfect with you it's more a case of bring out your dead
33:15oh here we go
33:16don't be like
33:17long before green bins and blue bins rag and bone men
33:24and mobile scrap merchants were the original recyclers
33:28it's a bit like when you're selling newspapers
33:31all right
33:31you know you go
33:32can i just say don't
33:40well i'm very worried you're going to hook your teeth out
33:45well i'll tell you what
33:46i'm actually
33:47i'd pay to see that
33:49blowing a bugle with false teeth is not good
33:52the good news is that fuzz's hard work has paid dividends
33:59actually the steering is much better much more positive
34:04oh is it yeah is it much less wayward
34:07that means the wheel's going to fall off any moment
34:09unlike the passengers very wayward and of course the driver
34:14but the steering positive
34:16i'm impressed the speedometer works
34:18no no everything works here
34:20this is growing along really nicely
34:22i love it
34:23all i know is it's going to get us to swindon
34:26hooray
34:27to a scrapper
34:28yeah
34:29hang on we're coming into the village now
34:31here we go
34:32here we go
34:33go on you have to blow harder than that mate
34:38that's it
34:39any old iron
34:40any old iron
34:41get your iron any old iron
34:45iron
34:46ah babbles
34:50ah middle-aged men in lycra
34:52always good to give them a shock
34:54yeah
34:54but back in the day
34:58you could i'm sure make a lot of money out of spout
35:01can you still do you think
35:03well i suppose it depends
35:03i'd love to find that out
35:05yeah yeah i think so
35:06if there's nothing in the village
35:08we'll head straight for my lock-up
35:10guys honestly
35:12right
35:13there's stuff here
35:14stuff that i've completely forgot
35:17look
35:17there's a trombone
35:19yeah
35:20hey
35:20that can go
35:21that leaf spring
35:24each sort of metal has a different value
35:27top whack
35:29lead and copper
35:30brass second best
35:31what are these
35:32that might be useful
35:33i love that
35:35that's
35:36that's brass
35:39not swinging very fast anymore is it
35:42no
35:43destroyed my life
35:44and steel is just a tenth of the value
35:47hey look
35:48i think we've got ourselves quite a stash
35:50yeah
35:50what do you reckon
35:51well why don't we find out
35:52how much we've made out of this little lot
35:55and then we'll find out
35:56exactly how hard we have to work in future
35:58though archetypal workhorses
36:02transit flatbeds
36:03were nicknamed little pigs
36:05because of their protruding nose
36:07how much though will our own little pig make us
36:10when we take it to market
36:12i'm gonna
36:13i'm gonna
36:14bet you
36:15that we are going to earn
36:18about 20 quid the lot
36:20do you reckon
36:21yeah
36:22what do you reckon
36:23i'm gonna stick my neck out here
36:26yeah
36:27because of the batteries in the leg
36:29yeah
36:29i'm gonna go 45
36:31all right
36:32yeah
36:32what do you think poz

36:44yeah
36:44that's right
36:44would i be so cynical
36:48yes maybe
36:49but i can't wait to find out
36:51what our haul is worth
36:52here
36:53we're here
36:54where
36:54have you noticed how quiet i'm being
37:01i don't know why are you being so quiet
37:02i'm just taking it all in
37:03what
37:04i've never been to a scrapyard like this
37:07welcome to saunders scrap metal in swindon
37:11now nick look what batteries
37:13we've got to get batteries onto here
37:14we do yeah
37:15if we just put them onto the scales to start with
37:16we'll get the weight
37:17oh right we weigh them in
37:18yeah we weigh them
37:19then you get paid accordingly yeah
37:20do we
37:21yeah
37:21how exciting
37:22this could be our first 30p
37:2460% of a car battery's weight is lead
37:29about 7 kilos in each one
37:31are you sure this is actually going to make a dent in the actual weighing machine
37:36well i don't know we'll find out in a second won't we
37:38i mean
37:39i think we're saving the planet
37:41bit by battery bit
37:43aren't we skid
37:45yeah but how long have we wanted to get these out the shed
37:47a long time
37:48yeah
37:48is that it
37:51come on then

38:33and obviously you've still got your scrap to go yet as well
38:35yeah well surely we're not going to get much for that
38:36well yeah i don't know what we're going to get for that we'll find out as well
38:38okay come on then so should we take the van round
38:40yep well if you get the sides back up pull on the big bridge so we get the weight of the
38:44truck and the scrap
38:45oh right okay
38:46we'll take it around next door and then we'll get it off around there
38:47okay i'll bet not be in the truck then
38:50all right okay okay let's put the sides up

39:28i think it's all right for a mark one v4
39:30yeah it comes with a bugle as well that i've been trying to entice people over
39:35for scrappage yeah
39:38now we go round to the steel and iron pile
