The enemy is an alien from the future, a fact concealed early in the story. As the plot unfolds from the midpoint onward, the truth gradually comes to light, and from the latter half, this revelation becomes the central axis around which the story develops.

13:51However, Gagan, who had escaped from Gargos, appears and hits him in the shoulder and leg, cornering him, but Tosia rushes to his aid and, even though she is holding Teral hostage, manages to shoot Gagan in the shoulder.
14:04Despite his injured shoulder, Gagan hits Teral, and Teral dies, leaving behind a will for peace on his home planet and on Earth.
