The original hero of the Showa era, who would appear out of nowhere with laughter whenever people were attacked by villains, defeat the bad guys, and then vanish again into thin air—this is the protagonist of this work, “Moonlight Mask”
00:18Today's topic is Gekko Kamen, the man who loves periods.
00:22Today's topic is Gekko Kamen, the man who loves periods.
00:52It is a comprehensive history of the world, and in 1972, a total of 39 episodes were aired, consisting of three parts: the Satan's Claw series, the Mammoth Kong series, and the Dragon's Fang series.
01:08So, let me start by introducing the main characters.
01:12Gekko Kamen is the main character of this work, but his true identity is unknown. He usually appears on his motorcycle, Moonlight, when the villains are active in the story or when the main characters are in danger.
01:31In battle, he uses a whip as well as the star-shaped shuriken Blue Star and the crescent moon boomerang Facing Moon, both of which are equipped on his belt.
01:42Iwai Juro is a young, renowned detective who runs the Iwai Detective Agency out of his own home. His sharp mind and high athletic ability have earned him immense trust from the police.
01:58Therefore, while working as a private detective, he also solved various cases at the request of Inspector Matsuda.
02:06In the play, when Iwai disappears, Gekko Kamen appears, and although there are some who point out that Iwai is Gekko Kamen, this has not been clearly confirmed.
02:20Gorohachi is Iwai's assistant, and although he is good at physical work and has the strength, he is a bit quick to jump to conclusions and is clumsy, which has led to him making many mistakes.
02:31However, he is also a lovable character and plays an important role as a comedic relief in the play.
02:42Shigeru is also Iwai's assistant, and although he is only a young boy, he is more intelligent than Gorohachi and often finds clues to cases.
02:50Koji is a brave boy who cares about Fujiko, who is in the same situation as him, and always acts together with her, while also fighting enemies alongside Gekko Kamen.
03:02Fujiko was thought to be an orphan after losing her mother, but it turns out that she is actually the daughter of Prince Shabanan, heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Baradai.
03:15Additionally, she was in Satan's clutches because she possessed one of the molds related to the kingdom's treasure, but after the treasure incident, she became a young girl working at Zhinreiin, a Chinese restaurant located in the same building as Iwai Detective Agency.
03:31Inspector Matsuda is a skilled detective at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and also acts as a liaison between Iwai and the police.
03:41In cases that are difficult for the police to solve on their own, they ask Iwai and Gekko Kamen for investigative cooperation, but there are also many cases where the police are faced with the dilemma of not being able to solve the case on their own.
03:53Dr. Yamawaki is a scientist who cooperates with Gekko Kamen and Iwai, providing gadgets such as a specially modified cloak for Gekko Kamen, and also developing the giant robot, Justice, to compete against Dr. Dogma.
04:12However, there were many cases where cooperation with investigations led to enemies targeting and attacking them.
04:19Dr. Yanagi develops HO crystals to purify water pollution for a suburban-plagued world, but when it turns out that HO crystals can be a deadly weapon when used in the atmosphere, he becomes a target for the Dragon's Fang.
04:39Satan's Claw is the hunt for an unknown entity who commands a criminal organization in the first part of the Satan's Claw series.
04:52In order to obtain the treasure of the Great Rose Kingdom, he commands his disciples with special skills to search for the key to the treasure, while at the same time donning various disguises and attacking Moonlight Mask with his disciples.
05:05In the second part of the Mammoth Kong series, Dr. Dogma is a mad scientist who commits insane acts, attempting to revive Mammoth Kong by turning his corpse into a cyborg.
05:21To carry out their plans, they also modify blackmailers who have escaped from prison and use them as cyber-humans.
05:30In the third part of the Dragon's Fang series, Dragon Fang is a dragon-man in the form of a dragon, who is trying to obtain the Eiichi King Crystal in order to conquer the world.
05:45He does not take direct action himself, but instead commands his subordinate Godom, a sorcerer, to create various monsters and carry out his plans.
05:55Before the anime version of Gekko Kamen was released in 1972, a live-action version was made into a TV drama from 1958 to 1959.
06:11The show aired as a 10-minute segment Monday through Saturday, and a 30-minute segment on Sundays.
06:21Also, in 1981, the time period was changed to 20 years before the live-action version, and the story was about fighting against anti-social groups plotting to overthrow the government.
06:34The film version of Gekko Kamen, The Moon Masked Rider, has been released with support from Daisuke Kuwabara, who plays George O'Hara, a natural scientist who has returned from the United States.
06:44Furthermore, an anime version, Moonlight Mask-kun, was aired in 1999, which inherited the basic worldview of Moonlight Mask but was a slapstick work full of comedy.
07:04Now, let's start with the first part of the Satan's Claws series.
07:09Prince Shabanan, the great heir to the Kingdom of Paradise, who was in exile in Japan, was assassinated in his mansion by the Bat Man, sent by Satan's Claw, over the key to the treasure passed down in the Kingdom of Paradise.
07:26However, before he passed away, Iwai confirmed that his daughter, Kawada Fujiko, who held the key to the treasure, was in Osaka, so he sent Gorohachi to Osaka to protect Fujiko.
07:40Meanwhile, Bat Man, who has learned of Fujiko's existence, kidnaps her on a Shinkansen train heading to Tokyo, but when it is revealed that he has infiltrated the circus troupe, Gekko Kamen rescues Fujiko, and Bat Man is executed by Satan's claws for failing his plan.
08:00Afterwards, the Red Scorpion vows to take revenge on the injustice of the world, with the goal of eliminating Moonlight Mask and obtaining the key to the treasure.
08:12Tenpu Matsuri Ginryu was once a great magician whose name was known throughout the world.
08:19To save the war story, he sends in assassins such as Iron Mask Khan, who obeys Satan's claws.
08:24Although these assassins are defeated, the vampire Rama finally obtains the three keys to the treasure and enters the ancient castle in the Kingdom of Paradise, where the treasure is hidden, accompanied by Otojita.
08:39However, in order to obtain the treasure, they need a member of the royal family of the Kingdom of Paradise, so they kidnap Fujiko, who is once again a member of the royal family, and finally succeed in entering the room where the treasure is kept.
08:52Rama discovers a dazzling treasure in the room and goes berserk, but then Gekko Kamen appears and the two engage in combat.
09:05During the fierce battle, a large diamond held by the Buddha statue accidentally falls, causing a huge explosion in the treasure room, and the old castle collapses along with many of the treasures and Rama.
09:18Although Satan's Claw was unable to obtain the treasure, he and his subordinates then began to commit other evil deeds.
09:29These evil deeds include the use of poison gas by the Third Batiste's Doctor Binken, Schwester, and Hellmask to exterminate humanity.
09:40The White-Haired Demon kills famous scholars who have lost their way in order to avenge his late father.
09:48He orders the ninja, lamenting the injustice in the world, to launch indiscriminate attacks on innocent people.
09:57The vampire Tamandor attacks a special facility and steals raw materials containing radioactive material in order to manufacture a nuclear bomb.
10:05He then carries out terrifying schemes, such as attacking a state guest visiting Japan and trying to cause international trouble, but all of them are foiled by Gekko Kamen.
10:19Therefore, as a final plan, they use three superhuman strongmen created with chemicals to start a riot, but the riot is calmed down when Gekko Kamen persuades the people.
10:35In the midst of this, a mysterious old man named Kiev appears, healing the injured with his mysterious powers. However, when he discovers that Moonlight Mask is Satan's Claw, Satan's Claw realizes that the situation is worsening and temporarily retreats to a secret base. However, Moonlight Mask pursues him, and after revealing his true identity, he is defeated in a death throes.
10:59The scene changes, and the world becomes peaceful again, with Moonlight Mask and Inspector Matsuda and his men illuminated by moonlight, bringing the Satan's Claw series to a close.
11:13The second part of the Mammoth Kong series begins with a tanker encountering an unidentified object and becoming stranded.
11:25A few days later, Mammoth Kong appears at the port and, despite being attacked by the Self-Defense Forces, is leading the rescued crew of a tanker to land at the lighthouse. Gekko Kamen appears and calls off the Self-Defense Forces' attack, while spraying a sleeping drug from the Moonlight, putting Mammoth Kong to a temporary sleep.
11:48Meanwhile, a cyber-human sent by the evil scientist Dr. Dogma attempts to capture Mammoth Kong, but is thwarted by Gekko Kamen, and Mammoth Kong is caught up in the battle and dies.
12:05Afterwards, Mammoth Kong's body is taken into the sea on a giant raft as a funeral, but after retrieving the body, Dr. Dogma has the cyber humans gather the necessary technology, equipment, materials, etc. to attempt to revive him.
12:24Therefore, the Chameleon Man kidnaps a medical doctor who is an authority in the medical field and is knowledgeable about cardiac resuscitation.
12:34The ant people obtain large amounts of blood from blood banks for transfusions.
12:41Hazelanter, a vegetative human, steals a special pump that is essential for blood circulation in an artificial heart.
12:48The Centipede Man kidnaps a doctor who knows how to control and manipulate brain functions.
12:57The jellyfish human, Medusa, steals an electron ray gun to use as a weapon.
13:03The demon, Iron Cyber, used his yokai abilities to obtain steel claws with great destructive power, and fought against Moonlight Mask according to his own orders, but after obtaining his objectives he was no longer of any use and was disposed of by Professor Dogma.
13:22Dr. Dogma finally completes Cyber Kong and attacks Gekko Kamen and the city, but when he sees his own son, Letter Kong, his brain waves become disrupted and he is unable to fight, so he temporarily retreats.
13:38Meanwhile, to counter Cyber Kong, Dr. Yamawaki completes a giant robot called Justice, and sends it to face off against the reappearing Cyber Kong.
13:53Modified, it no longer even recognizes Little Kong and goes on a rampage, but after a fierce battle, Justice emerges victorious.
14:01Cyber Kong then undergoes resuscitation surgery as Mammoth Kong at Dr. Yamawaki's laboratory, while Justice, although damaged, is released to the public as is.
14:16However, a gap in security is exploited and Justice is stolen by Dr. Dogma, who then modifies it and launches an attack on Tokyo. However, Gekko Kamen attaches a device to Justice that blocks control radio waves, causing Justice to stop functioning.
14:34Upon seeing this successor, Dr. Dogma attacks himself, but after receiving a combined attack from Gekko Kamen's facing moon and Mammoth Kong, his machine explodes and disappears.
14:51The Mammoth Kong series comes to an end with the battle over, Mammoth Kong and Little Kong returning to their hometown as Shigeru and the others see them off.
15:04The third part of the Dragon Riding series begins with Dr. Yanagi beginning the final experiment on the HO crystals he has completed.
15:16The experiment was a success, and when activated underwater, the HO crystals purified the water and produced large amounts of oxygen.
15:25However, Dragon's Mount learns that when HO crystals are activated in the air, the water evaporates in an instant, so he attacks Dr. Yanagi in an attempt to obtain the HO crystals as a weapon, but is stopped by Moonlight Mask.
15:45After being attacked by the dragon's horse, Dr. Yanagi stores the HO crystals in a special safe, while hiding the microfilm of the chemical formula needed to manufacture HO crystals in his daughter Ayako's pendant.
16:01Meanwhile, Dragon Rider summons the Soul Magician Godom and then uses a cursed clay doll to try to steal the HO crystals from the safe, but is once again thwarted by Moonlight Mask.
16:19From this point on, Dragon Rider and Godom manipulate their subordinates to try to obtain the HO crystals.
16:27As their subordinates, the Rock People took advantage of the tunnel accident to plunder the HO crystals.
16:38In order to eliminate Moonlight Mask, Galarov and Guska attack the weak point of his weapon, Mukaitsuki.
16:45The doll, into which the soul has been transformed, controls the boy and obtains his memories of the HO crystal that Dr. Yanagi possesses.
16:53The Phantom Ninja kidnap Dr. Yanagi to learn how to manufacture HO crystals.
17:03The nefarious Hindler and Race use HO crystals to plot the destruction of Tokyo.
17:10The mannequin then attempts various schemes, such as imprisoning Dr. Yanagi's daughter and forcing her to manufacture HO crystals, but all of them are thwarted by Gekko Kamen.
17:25However, they ultimately succeeded in kidnapping Dr. Yanagi, and planned to mass-produce HO crystals at a secret base in Hokkaido, load them onto rockets, and launch them to major cities around the world.
17:43Meanwhile, Iwai and Gorohachi discover the secret base and infiltrate it, but Shigeru, who had been captured earlier, and Gorohachi, who had fallen into a trap, end up trapped at the tip of the rocket.
17:58After a while, the countdown to the rocket's launch begins, but Gekko Kamen appears with the Moonlight and rescues the two from the rocket, at which point Dragon Fang attacks.
18:15As the fierce battle unfolds, Godom gives the command to launch the rocket.
18:22Seeing this scene, Gekko Kamen holds up the opposite moon to the moonlight, and the collected moonlight falls on the rocket, causing it to explode in its fixed position. At the same time, the water in the HO crystal's orbit evaporates, exposing the fixed secret base.
18:42With the plan failing, Dragon Fang and Godom think it's all over, but they combine to form a giant dragon and the final battle with Moonlight Mask begins.
18:56The deadly battle continues with neither of them backing down, but in the end, the giant dragon is hit by Moonlight Mask's facing moon in both eyes and between its eyebrows, and with a loud bang it falls to the ground, disappearing with a parting shot.
19:11While the long and painful battle with the powerful enemy becomes a thing of the past, the program ends with a scene of Gekko Kamen standing in the moonlight, quietly bidding farewell to everyone, and leaving on the Moonlight.
19:33Now let's take a look at Gekko Kamen in action.
