00:00BBC stands up to Trump.
00:02Trump is challenging the BBC over a documentary that stitched together parts of his January 6th speech.
00:08He wants an apology, a retraction and compensation for the harm caused.
00:13But the BBC says no real harm occurred and won't pay.
00:17The remarks were made just before his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol
00:20to interfere with the certification of Joe Biden's Electoral College victory.
00:24The edited clip showed Trump saying,
00:26We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and I'll be there with you, and we'll fight.
00:31We fight like H, and if you don't fight like H, you're not going to have a country anymore.
00:36The clip combined separate parts of Trump's speech.
00:39Early on, he said,
00:40We're going to walk down, we're going to walk down to the Capitol,
00:43and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen.
00:46After the controversy, BBC leaders Tim Davey and Deborah Ternes resigned.
00:52Trump's legal team threatened a $1 billion lawsuit
00:54unless the BBC issued a full and fair retraction,
00:58apologized, and appropriately compensated President Trump for the harm caused.
01:03In its clarifications and corrections,
01:05the BBC admitted the segment,
01:07showed excerpts taken from different parts of the speech,
01:10and said,
01:11We accept that our edit unintentionally created the impression
01:14that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.
01:18The BBC added,
01:19The BBC would like to apologize to President Trump for that error of judgment,
01:24and will not be broadcast again in this form on any BBC platforms.
01:29The BBC argues it lacked U.S. rights and didn't air the Panorama episode there.
01:34The documentary caused no harm since Trump won in 2024.
01:38The clip was only edited for brevity and wasn't meant to be viewed alone.
01:42And that U.S. defamation law offers broad protections in such cases.
01:45Prior to the BBC's apology,
01:48the Daily Telegraph noted another misleading edit of Trump's January 6th speech,
01:53this one appearing on a 2022 BBC Newsnight episode.
01:57A BBC spokesperson later stated,
01:59The BBC holds itself to the highest editorial standards.
02:03This matter has been brought to our attention,
02:05and we are now looking into it.
