00:00Two top leaders of Britain's BBC resigned on Sunday amid allegations of bias at the
00:05broadcaster, including over the editing of a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:10Director General Tim Davey, the BBC's most senior executive, quit after an internal memo
00:16leaked by the Daily Telegraph newspaper had cited a string of failings. That included coverage of
00:21the Israel-Hamas war, trans issues, and edits of a speech made by Trump in Washington, D.C.
00:27on January 6, 2021. The BBC's flagship Panorama show was found, according to the memo,
00:34to have edited two parts of Trump's speech together, so that it appeared he had encouraged
00:39the Capitol riot later that day. That documentary showed this part of Trump's speech.
00:44We're going to walk down to the Capitol.
00:49And we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.
00:55But in the Panorama episode, we're going to walk down to the Capitol was shown cut together
01:01with other parts of his speech, including close to its end, where Trump said, we fight like hell.
01:07Davey has led the BBC since 2020. He said he decided to leave after, quote, reflecting on the very
01:13intense personal and professional demands of managing this role over many years in these
01:17febrile times. A person familiar with the situation said Davey's decision had left the BBC board stunned,
01:23and he would stay on for the next few months while a replacement was found.
01:27The CEO of BBC News, Deborah Ternas, also resigned Sunday. In an email to staff, she said, quote,
01:34I want to be absolutely clear recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong.
01:40Trump welcomed the departures, criticizing the two as very dishonest people. The leaked internal
01:45report had also said BBC Arabic had showed anti-Israel bias in its reporting of the war on Gaza,
01:51and that stories which raised difficult questions around trans issues have been suppressed
01:55by a small group of staff.
