The CW has found its new Batwoman.
Transcript
00:00Batwoman is ready to fly again. The CW has found its new Batwoman to replace Ruby Rose in Javicia
00:05Leslie. The actress whose credits include CBS's God Friended Me and BET's The Family Business
00:10will take over the title role in the show's second season, following the departure of star
00:14Rose at the end of season one. Leslie said,
00:17I'm extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television.
00:22And as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show,
00:26which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ plus community.
00:29The show's producers opted to create a new character rather than hire someone to replace
00:33Rose as Kate Kane. Leslie's character, Ryan Wilder, is described as likable, messy, a little goofy,
00:38untamed, and nothing like Kate Kane. With no one in her life to keep her on track,
00:42Wilder spent years as a drug runner dodging the Gotham City Police Department and masking her
00:46pain with bad habits. Wilder is also described as an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate,
00:51and very much not your stereotypical all-American hero. Rose took to Instagram to praise Leslie's
00:56casting, writing,
00:57OMG, this is amazing. I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman.
01:02I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the Bat cape. You are walking into an amazing
01:06cast and crew. I can't wait to watch season two. You are going to be amazing.
01:10In response to an online report that Rose's character Kane would be killed in the show,
01:14showrunner Caroline Dry said that she wouldn't do that.
01:16In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don't want to give away
01:20any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ plus justice is at the very
01:25core of what Batwoman is, and we have no intention of abandoning that. Batwoman is scheduled to return
01:29in early 2021. For more on this story, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor.
