00:00The Wire creator David Simon is taking a stand and saying he's pulling his upcoming HBO project
00:05from Texas over its controversial abortion law. Simon announced via Twitter,
00:10As an employer, this is beyond politics. I'm turning in scripts next month on an HBO
00:15non-fiction miniseries based on events in Texas. But I can't and won't ask female cast and crew
00:21to forego civil liberties to film there and ask for recommendations on other filming locations.
00:26However, Simon's tweet prompted a protest from the Dallas Film and Creative Industries office which replied,
00:31Laws of a state are not reflective of its entire population.
00:35Not bringing a production to Dallas only serves to further disenfranchise those that live here.
00:40We need talent, crew, creatives to stay and vote, not get driven out by inability to make a living.
00:46Simon then shot back saying they misunderstood, writing,
00:49My singular responsibility is to securing and maintaining the civil liberties of all those we employ
00:54during the course of a production. Simon's project has not yet been announced so it's likely still
00:59at an early stage. HBO had no comment on the specific matter. The move follows a Tuesday
01:04Washington Post op-ed by actress Uma Thurman where she condemned the new law and shared that she herself
01:10had an abortion in her late teens. This law is yet another discriminatory tool against those who are
01:15economically disadvantaged and often indeed against their partners. The new Texas law effectively bans
01:21abortions roughly six weeks into pregnancy by allowing private citizens to sue abortion providers and
01:27anyone else who helped a woman obtain the procedure. For more on this story, head to THR.com.
