Ruth Carter talked to the Hollywood Reporter about her work on ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and working with director Ryan Coogler on the Oscars 2023 red carpet.
Transcript
00:00You look so beautiful, tell me what inspired your look tonight.
00:06The colors of Wakanda, the bright, saturated colors.
00:12I also wanted to represent the film in a forward-thinking way, Afrofuture.
00:19So Julia Korner 3D printed my earrings, I just wanted to be in Wakanda.
00:28And I feel like the color helps that.
00:32What would it mean to win another Oscar for this movie?
00:35It would mean that I'm doing something right.
00:39It would mean that my colleagues and the Academy are recognizing that a superhero is a black
00:48woman.
00:50And that means the world to me.
00:53In designing that suit, what was your inspiration and how did you form it?
00:58Well, the suit, it's actually part of Marvel's arsenal.
01:02So it comes out of the visual development department, Ryan Marderding, Joss Nizzi, great artists.
01:10And also through the mind of Ryan Coogler, there's a story in that suit.
01:15And that story is vibranium, it's gold from Killmonger.
01:20It represents the duality that Shuri's facing of losing her brother and then losing her mother.
01:28Is she angry?
01:29You know, there's a lot of questions that she's trying to grapple with.
01:34And that was the inspiration for that suit.
01:38It has a woman's touch.
01:40There's a lot of adornments on that, on that costume.
01:43It has a high neck, which is great for Shuri's body type and it suits, it suits her.
01:50She actually is a costume designer.
01:52She designed T'Challa's suit.
01:54You know, I feel like she's a costume designer and she designed her own suit.
01:57So yeah, the story is such that she is grappling with both good and evil.
02:06What's your favorite part about collaborating with Ryan?
02:09That Ryan is so generous.
02:13You're not afraid to tell him what your challenges are.
02:19And he will say, let me help you, what are you trying to figure out?
02:24And when you tell him he has an answer, that's what we want from our directors.
02:29We want them to help us get to the answers and that's what I love the most about collaborating
02:35with him.
02:36He's very generous.
02:37And of course, Rihanna is performing the song from the movie tonight.
02:41How excited are you for that performance?
02:44That song, it just gets bigger and bigger in your heart.
02:49And every time I hear it, I keep picturing like a chorus of like children singing it.
02:55You know, I can just see it having another life.
02:59And every time the artist sings that song, especially Rihanna, it lifts me up.
03:05And I think it's a wonderful lullaby that will be sung by children and adults.
