00:00Hi Barbie!
00:01Hi Ken!
00:03Could we be getting a Barbie sequel?
00:05While director Greta Gerwig is revealing whether or not she sees one in her future.
00:09During an interview with the New York Times,
00:11the filmmaker was asked if she sees the blockbuster film as the start of a franchise.
00:16The director noted,
00:17At this moment, it's all I've got.
00:19I feel like that at the end of every movie.
00:21Like I'll never have another idea, and everything I've ever wanted to do, I did.
00:25I wouldn't want to squash anybody else's dream,
00:27but for me, at this moment, I'm at totally zero.
00:31A sequel wouldn't be totally out of left field,
00:33seeing as Barbie scored a record-breaking debut weekend,
00:36earning one of the top openings since the pandemic,
00:39with $162 million at the North American box office,
00:43and Gerwig also breaking the opening weekend record for a female director.
00:47Gerwig also discussed the massive praise the film has been receiving, saying,
00:51Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine something like this.
00:55My hope for the movie is that it's an invitation for everybody to be part of the party,
00:59and let go of the things that aren't necessarily serving us as either women or men.
01:04The filmmaker also addressed some of the disagreements the film's creative team had with Mattel throughout filming.
01:10It was previously reported that Richard Dixon, COO and president of Mattel,
01:14went to the London set at one point,
01:16and argued with Gerwig and star Margot Robbie over a scene where a teenage human
01:20calls Barbie dolls sexist and fascist.
01:23They were coming anyway, so it wasn't like,
01:25stop everything, we all have to go to London.
01:28Although she never got a full seal of approval from Mattel,
01:30she explained, she got them to accept it enough to proceed.
01:34I had faith once it was in there, and they saw it, that they would embrace it, not fight it.
