00:00How excited are you to be here tonight and be a part of this special hip-hop anniversary performance?
00:05May I speak historical first? Is that okay?
00:08Yes.
00:09What's your name?
00:10I'm Tiffany.
00:11Hi Tiffany.
00:14This form of hip-hop is 50 years old, right?
00:17And I can remember when we were doing this as children, this was a form of recreation.
00:23Like mom saying, alright did you finish your homework? Did you do your studies?
00:27Now go outside and play and go do something.
00:29And we used to go to the supermarkets, get shopping carts to put the equipment in it and go to the nearest park to just play this type of music.
00:39I came up with a formula called the quick mix theory where I would pick just the drum breakdown and turn that into a bed of music.
00:47And I put a microphone on the other side of the table.
00:50And today it is unarguably the Godzilla of music right now.
01:00Being an inventor, sometimes you miss.
01:04You didn't miss.
01:05You didn't miss.
01:06We didn't miss, but it was more like, what is that that he's doing?
01:14And how?
01:16So it went from me repeating a drum section and making it a music bed to sampling, to record business, to here we are.
01:28I'm humbled.
01:30Being an inventor of this culture, I'm speechless.
01:36It's going to be a very big moment tonight and we're all looking forward to it at the end of the show.
01:42I'm going to try not to cry.
01:44I'm going to try.
01:45I will try not to cry tonight, you know.
01:47What can you tease about what we're going to see in this performance tonight?
01:50Shout out to Questlove.
01:54Questlove says, you know, we're in the Grammys, but he wanted to do something different, something unforgettable.
02:00So he says, Flash, I want to do something in a consecutive order and I want to start with you and go all the way to now.
02:08So he called me and a bunch of his other friends, which are also my friends.
02:13So if you can just...
02:16That's a lot of friends.
02:18A lot of friends.
02:19Big name friends.
02:20Big name friends that are, let's just say experts in their craft, are going to join the Roots along with me.
02:27And we're going to do something hip-hop-like.
02:33I was sworn to secrecy.
02:35I cannot tell you, but it's going to be special.
02:38It's going to be great.
02:39We're so excited to see it.
02:40And so much amazing music was released this last year.
02:43So much great hip-hop.
02:44What was the music that you had on repeat that you loved listening to?
02:47Oh my goodness.
02:48I like Jay-Z.
02:50I like Drake.
02:51I like Lil Baby.
02:52I like Megan Thee Stallion.
02:53I like Lizzo.
02:54I like Stravinsky.
02:55I like Bach.
02:56I like Beethoven.
02:57I listen to a little bit of everything.
02:58So for me, for hip-hop to have gone this far and now it's an international thing, I'm a proud dad.
03:04Proud dad here.
03:05Proud dad, Grandmaster Flash here, pretty much.
03:09As an innovator yourself in the genre, who are some people today who you feel like they're doing things that are new and different and you're really watching their work and loving their innovation?
03:25who are some people today who you feel like they're doing things that are new and different
03:29and you're really like watching their work and loving their innovation?
03:33Whenever I'm asked that question, whether I'm here or if I'm in Japan or if I'm in Germany
03:36and I'm asked that question, that next person is in their bedroom right now.
03:42We didn't see him yet or we didn't see her yet.
03:45Because in hip-hop, everything creatively is fair game.
03:51We haven't seen them yet.
03:52And that's what I say all the time.
03:54I'm sticking to the story and I'm sticking to it.
03:57I love that. Have a great night tonight and we cannot wait to see this performance.
04:00Thank you so much.
