00:00You don't know the real me.
00:01There isn't a real you.
00:03Oh yeah, I forgot.
00:06Behind-the-scenes footage from Jim Carrey's 1999 Andy Kaufman
00:09biopic, Man on the Moon, has been repurposed for a new documentary
00:13premiering at the Venice Film Festival.
00:15Jim and Andy, The Great Beyond, the story of Jim Carrey and Andy Kaufman
00:19featuring a very special contractually obligated mention of Tony Clifton
00:22features footage that was originally shot for an electronic press kit of Man on the Moon.
00:27The new film gives fans a glimpse into the extensive lengths that
00:30Carey went to to become Kaufman for the film, and in turn Kaufman's alter ego,
00:35Tony Clifton.
00:36It was psychotic at times, said Carey in Venice.
00:38The actor explained that he didn't leave the character once, even taking a two-hour
00:43phone call with Ron Howard as Andy to give notes on how the Grinch stole Christmas.
00:48Jim Carrey didn't exist at that time, he said.
00:50Andy actually affected the Grinch as well.
00:53Carey, who believes Kaufman took over while he filmed Man on the Moon, explained,
00:57The true author of the project is Andy and his genius.
01:00The fact that he committed so completely to what he did really made that possible
01:04and made it essential for me to lose myself, he said.
01:07I don't feel like I made the film at all. I feel like Andy made the film.
01:11In the film, Carey also discussed how every story he tackled in his projects
01:15paralleled what was currently happening in his life.
01:17He discussed how his impact on Hollywood has been through these authentic experiences,
01:22from going through heartbreak before eternal sunshine to being constantly watched in real life
01:27and on the Truman Show, Carey believes that none of his roles were accidental.
01:31Carey also admitted that he is hoping to step behind the camera one day.
01:35I've thought about it many times. It probably will happen at a certain point, he said.
01:39I would like to direct at some point if I wasn't acting in the film.
