00:00Look, I started writing this script in 06 when Bush was president, and we thought he
00:05was bad enough.
00:07When times are challenging politically, one is sort of of two minds.
00:13I mean, I'll speak for myself.
00:14You kind of think, well, I have the ability to make films.
00:17Maybe it's incumbent upon me to make a political movie of some type, not literally, but even
00:23with a metaphor.
00:24And on the other hand, when times are tough politically, you think, well, now's the time
00:28to make art.
00:30And just show something with love.
00:32So, I don't know, let's just see what comes out.
00:35You can't really plan those things.
00:37What comes out of you simply comes like, yeah, I won't say like what, but.
00:49Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a panacea for overpopulation and climate change,
00:54Norwegian scientists discovered how to shrink people down to five inches tall and proposed
00:59it very earnestly to the world as the only possible solution to our gravest problem.
01:05That was very easy for you.
01:08Well, he wrote it.
01:09Well rehearsed.
01:10You may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife.
01:15And you may say to yourself, my God, what have I done?
01:22Well, Matt's wonderful.
01:23He's, for me, being that I'm probably the least experienced of the cast, I didn't feel
01:30unworthy or that I wasn't on the same playing field.
01:33And it's nice for a performer to not have all of that going on and to be able to go and just
01:44sit in the trailer with him and do the lines and just like have a good laugh and then go
01:49into a pretty heavy scene is like a nice balance.
01:54He does exactly what a lead actor should do in a film, which is be a partner to those of
02:00us behind the camera, to the cinematographer and myself, and a partner like a team captain
02:07with the rest of the cast and really give each cast member his all when acting with them.
02:15It's an important sort of component on a set is the behavior of the lead actor.
02:19Christophe, what for you about this character?
02:21Well, I had a problem initially because, you know, they overdid the authenticity a little
02:27bit.
02:28They wrote my part in Serbian.
02:30So I had to activate my Serbian friends to even translate what it was all about.
02:36Yeah, I mean, it's fascinating and stunning, but they did really do the work all the way.
02:49But, yeah.
