00:00Shameless star Emmy Rossum and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail are teaming with The
00:04Hollywood Reporter to create a limited series based on THR's senior writer Gary
00:08Baum's investigative feature about Angeline, LA's mysterious billboard icon. Rossum
00:13will star as Angeline, the self-created pop culture icon whose real name is Renee
00:17Goldberg.
00:17"'I've always been fascinated by the enigma that is Angeline,' Rossum said in a
00:21statement. At a young age, I can vividly remember staring up at her on a billboard
00:25above me and wondering, who is that woman?' From the moment I read Gary's recent
00:29piece, I knew I had to tell this story. It's a poignant and bizarre tale about the
00:33hunger for fame, the sexualization of women and the erasing of past traumas."
00:38Angeline, 67, is the LA-raised daughter of Holocaust survivors who found refuge in
00:42what Baum described as Schicksal drag. Her parents were sent to concentration camps
00:46before escaping to America and settling in LA's Fairfax district. Angeline eventually
00:51reinvented herself as a blonde bombshell famous for simply being famous by appearing
00:55on billboards in Los Angeles and driving a pink Cadillac around Hollywood.
00:58The Angeline Project marks the first scripted television adaptation of a Hollywood
01:02Reporter article since the publication's reinvention as a weekly magazine and home
01:06for long-form journalism. This will be the second time that husband and wife team
01:10Esmail and Rossum have worked together. The pair met while making his directorial
01:13debut, Comet, in which she starred. The couple married in May.
01:16Outside of Mr. Robot, Esmail will also write, direct and executive produce a two-season
01:21straight-to-series order at Amazon for Julia Roberts' TV series,
01:24Homecoming, based on the podcast of the same name. And Rossum recently saw her dramedy
01:28Shameless renewed for a ninth season at Showtime, where the series ranks as its most-watched
01:32original. The actress held out for equal pay with Shameless star William H. Macy last year.
01:37While the Angeline limited series marks her first for THR, the publication recently was
01:41nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for the unscripted series Close Up with The
01:45Hollywood Reporter. The series, based on THR's awards season roundtables, airs on Sundance TV.
