00:00The incredible story of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery is coming to life as
00:09Focus Features drops the first trailer for Harriet. Cynthia Erivo stars as the title
00:14character in the biopic, which shows Tubman's extraordinary journey and rise to become
00:18one of America's greatest heroes when she helps free hundreds of slaves through the
00:22Underground Railroad. The trailer opens up with Tubman's escape from her slave owner
00:26and traveling a hundred miles to finally be free. The trailer also shows her first
00:31encounter with abolitionist William Still, played by Leslie Odom Jr., who offers her the
00:36opportunity to start fresh, as well as an introduction to the Underground Railroad, which
00:40played an integral part in helping free slaves. The film's cast is rounded out by Janelle
00:45Monet, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles and Clark Peters. Now Erivo's role in Harriet could be an
00:51important milestone for her career, not only by having the opportunity to portray such an
00:55important figure in history, but the actress is also on par to become an EGOT winner.
01:00Erivo has already won Emmy, Grammy and Tony awards for her work on Broadway's The Color
01:05Purple, so she would now only need an Oscar to become an EGOT recipient. And with Harriet,
01:09she just might get her shot. The film is set to hit theaters November 1st, with its world
01:14premiere taking place at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival. To watch the full trailer, head over to
