Hot and challenging weather conditions have had authorities in Western Australia fighting fires on multiple fronts. In Geraldton, where the temperature hit 40 degrees, locals were forced to flee their homes as a fast and furious blaze bore down. Authorities have confirmed some damage to properties. Tonight, the bushfire emergency warning remains in place, with homes still under threat.

00:00In the outer suburbs of Geraldton, a fire sprung up and quickly became an emergency,
00:11threatening lives and homes.
00:14Fueled by gusty winds and hot temperatures, firefighters were forced to defend properties
00:20as locals packed their cars and fled.
00:22If the fire went any further towards us, I would have got caught on my part of the road,
00:28so it was better to just be safe and leave.
00:32While some went to friends, others will spend the night at an evacuation centre in town.
00:37The Department of Education has advised three schools will be closed in the area, Wagrakine
00:42and Walkaway Primary Schools and Northampton District High.
00:47Western Power says several thousand homes are without power.
00:51Closer to Perth, another emergency bushfire in Chittering threatened large semi-rural properties
00:57with at least one removable donger going up in flames.
01:00Authorities say it was a very fast moving fire.
01:04What was originally a small fire turned into about a hundred and so hectares within the first
01:08hour and a half and eventually, just after three hours, we contained it at 196 hectares.
01:13The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
01:17And in 2J, at least one shed was destroyed as a bushfire ripped through Maringa.
01:22With even more challenging conditions expected tomorrow, people are being urged to be extra careful.
01:29Community really needs to be present and sort of vigilant around what could happen tomorrow,
01:33so very strong winds, hot weather as well.
