'One of Them Days' is the buddy-comedy film you need to see as it comes out victorious in its first weekend at the box office. Director Lawrence Lamont and producer Issa Rae sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to dish all about Keke & SZA's comedic chemistry, taking inspiration from classic films set in L.A. and more.

00:09have a girl's night. A little Prosecco and Pals. One of them days is the buddy comedy film you

00:14need to see as it comes out victorious in its first weekend at the box office. You been that

00:18girl? Been that girl. The film stars Kiki Palmer and SZA who play best friends and roommates in

00:25West Los Angeles barely getting by and dreaming of financial stability. However when it's time to

00:30pay rent things take a turn forcing them on a desperate path to recoup the money before they're

00:35evicted. We don't get the rent money by six we're gonna be on a curve with Fabian. Director Lawrence

00:39Lamont and producer Issa Rae sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to dish all about Kiki and

00:44SZA's comedic chemistry taking inspiration from classic films set in LA such as Friday. Well that

00:50was a huge point for me to make sure that the the roots and of black cinema in LA you know shine. So

01:00not just Friday it was you know Boys in the Hood, Poetic Justice, a lot of John Singleton's work,

01:06the Hughes Brothers. I think that was very important to keep the essence of LA but also making sure the

01:11world is broad as well. And it's no question that Kiki and SZA were magic on screen as the two have been

01:16paired before on SNL back in 2022. Everyone who witnessed their hilarious chemistry knew that

01:22that wouldn't be the last time audiences saw the duo back together again.

01:26Kiki was a dream get and she's been with the project you know since it but for about like six

01:31years now this has been a long development process and she's just the ideal like hilarious every woman

01:39in some way. And then SZA came about because our studio exec you know he was he was just like SOS had

01:48come out and he was like I my daughter loves SZA do you think we could get her and we were like what I

01:53don't know if she would ever do something like this she's more of an she's an artist but we can try

01:58and she was down and she came and did chemistry reads she was working with Kiki at her house

02:03yeah their chemistry was just instant and it was I think the chemistry reads happened right after they

02:08did their SNL appearance. Oh yeah it was we did a rehearsal with them like earlier in the year

02:14and it was just instant. SZA also makes her feature film acting debut in One of Them Days and according to

02:20Lamont they made sure she stayed true to herself while portraying her character Alyssa she's such

02:25an artist you know and and I can see like the perfectionism in her so she wanted to make sure

02:30that she was just always on point um we made sure she had somebody running lines with her all the time

02:36and um again she literally is Alyssa so it's like leaning into who she is was so like automatic you

02:44know for her portraying this character. One of Them Days is out in theaters everywhere. This is The
