00:00Biggest spenders.
00:01I'm not even looking at the prices.
00:03I was a hundred off.
00:04Do we have a hundred to be a hundred off?
00:06Transforming kitchens.
00:07We're not allowed anything.
00:09Seaweed salad.
00:10Who are they trying to kid?
00:11And boosting nutrition.
00:13Looks very healthy, green.
00:15I don't like the taste.
00:16All to save our hard-earned cash.
00:19It's so cheap.
00:20This is amazing.
00:21I'm so pleased with myself.
00:22We get revealing expert help.
00:2455% of that sauce is sugar.
00:27And even let you guys in on the act.
00:29I love it.
00:30It's time we all learned to eat well for less.
00:33Delicious.
00:35Meet a couple of empty nesters using their financial freedom to misbehave with takeaways.
00:40Ignorance is bliss.
00:41And there's hardly any dishes afterwards.
00:43Can Mike and Ganesh bring some much-needed order to mealtimes?
00:47More tippies than me.
00:48The vegetables.
00:49For the sake of Jane and Bernie's health.
00:59This week you find us in Te Atatutu Peninsula, West Auckland, with Jane and Bernie, a carefree
01:07couple who both work for Auckland Transport.
01:11With the kids flown the coop, the dreaded empty nest takeaway meals for two have crept in.
01:16So Jane's daughter Kim and granddaughter Lola think it's time for an almighty change.
01:22My daughter put our name forward for Eat Well for Less.
01:27Kim was really concerned and probably still is about our eating habits to the point where she was even thinking of bringing meals over.
01:36Kim and Lola were open about it and said, hey, we want you guys to be around for longer.
01:40Eating through the week is pretty, pretty bad.
01:46Jane and Bernie's love of takeaways and treats is a serious case of too much of a bad thing.
01:51And Kim and Lola are desperate for them to change.
01:54The conversation is, do you feel like, not really?
01:57What should we have tonight?
01:59And then it's the big decision.
02:00Which of the multiple choice takeaway outlets are we going to get from tonight?
02:04And there's hardly any dishes afterwards.
02:07Oh hi, can I order a take out please?
02:10Fine order please.
02:11One ferrocini carbonara.
02:13Two chips.
02:14A combination chow mein please.
02:16One butter chicken mild.
02:18An Italian salad.
02:19Two chicken nuggets.
02:20Chicken fried rice.
02:21Two squid rings please.
02:24That'd be great.
02:25Bye.
02:26See you then.
02:27We're concerned for their house, looking at the way they eat.
02:29There's a lot of takeaways, not a lot of vegetables.
02:33It's not good the way that they're eating currently and being on the show could help them and help them see what we are seeing.
02:40We just really want them to, you know, be around for a long time.
02:46Between the weekly trips to Maccas, the local Indian takeaways and the trusty Turkish, it all adds up to an eye-watering weekly spend.
02:54Do you do a falafel salad?
02:55Yeah.
02:56In terms of cost, we don't really keep a track and ignorance is bliss.
03:00You don't worry about what you don't know.
03:02And we don't want to add it up.
03:04We might get a fright.
03:06Breaking the fast food habit will benefit both their wallet and their waistlines.
03:11Health is best and foremost.
03:13Yeah, I agree with that, absolutely.
03:15Money's not such an issue.
03:17Health and quality of life are the two keys.
03:20Changing their shopping habit is the first step to kickstart this health kick.
03:24Rumour has it this might be the quickest shop ever on Eat Well For Less.
03:28Chef Michael Vandielsen and restauranteur Ganesh Raj are watching closely from their secret spot in the stockroom.
03:34Here we go.
03:35Here we go.
03:36You like your mandarins, so you get them.
03:38I think I've still got avocado.
03:40Okay, cabbage, carrots.
03:43Lola loves those.
03:44Yep.
03:45Carrots in a bag.
03:46They're quite pretty, though.
03:48Yeah, but look, I bet they're super expensive.
03:51Um...
03:52Potatoes?
03:53Just a couple, eh?
03:54Yeah.
03:55I think we're okay vegetable-wise now, eh?
03:56I think so.
03:57Yep.
03:58That's it.
03:59Finito.
04:00For seven days.
04:01No more fruit and veg.
04:02Silver side.
04:03Yeah, um, mints.
04:04That one, that one is, that one's got the least fat in it that you like.
04:07That's all right.
04:08You actually put it on a sandwich.
04:10That's it.
04:11So we have silver side, we have mints.
04:13And some vegetables.
04:14And some veggies.
04:15Something's not right.
04:16Ooh, chippies.
04:22More chippies than meat.
04:24No vegetables.
04:27Oh, vanilla, this one?
04:28Yep.
04:29Yum.
04:30Gotta have my coffee.
04:32Yes.
04:33How much is that box?
04:34Too much.
04:35Too much money.
04:36Too much sugar.
04:37I think we're pretty much done, actually.
04:38I think we're done.
04:39We're all good for another week.
04:40We're all good for another week.
04:41There's no way.
04:42That is by far the smallest trolley we've ever seen.
04:45You're so right.
04:46Let's go sort this.
04:47Okay.
04:48Time for a tiny shop takedown.
04:51Hello, everybody.
04:52G'day, g'day.
04:53Oh, my goodness.
04:54How are you?
04:55Nice to meet you.
04:56Jane.
04:57Jane.
04:58Nice to meet you.
04:59Oh, my gosh.
05:00Pleasure to meet you, Bernie.
05:01You well?
05:02Yes.
05:03Should we walk with you and then you can finish a shop?
05:05No, we're done.
05:06This is us.
05:07You are not.
05:08We're done.
05:09There's nothing in there.
05:10This is us.
05:11You're telling me this is all your weekly shop.
05:14Yeah.
05:15We've got stuff at home still.
05:16Where's your meals?
05:18I've got a silver cider mince in here.
05:23Oh, that's the granddaughter.
05:24Wow.
05:25You could get a meal out of that, couldn't you?
05:27That and that.
05:28Oh, delicious.
05:30Okay, let's go look.
05:31Come on, let's go have a look.
05:34With Mike and Ganesh on the till, let's get scanning.
05:37This is going to be frightening.
05:38Is this you?
05:39Great.
05:40That's me and the granddaughter dipped in Philly cheese.
05:42Oh.
05:43Yeah.
05:44That's $4.
05:45Carrots.
05:46But they're so sweet.
05:47They're little sweet carrots.
05:49They're only sweet because they're calling you in their little packet.
05:52The regular ones are beautiful, I promise you.
05:54Angus beef prime meat.
05:57Oh, this is delicious mince.
05:59And $10 worth of delicious mince.
06:03$10, eh?
06:04That's why we don't look at the prices.
06:06That's why we don't look at the prices.
06:08Oh no.
06:09Look at the sugar on that.
06:1010% of your daily intake is in one serving.
06:14So how often would you have this?
06:16Probably twice a day.
06:17So 20% of your daily sugar is in those.
06:20I add vanilla syrup.
06:22I felt like a pain just then.
06:24Not a lot, but a little bit.
06:25And those are $14.
06:28That pain just went up, guys.
06:30Okay then.
06:31More lollies you can spread.
06:32Yes.
06:33Premium.
06:34More lollies you can spread.
06:35Hidden lollies you can spread.
06:37These have so much.
06:38I know.
06:39That word sweet should be bigger.
06:40Have a look.
06:41How much sugar is there?
06:42Sugar in here is 41 per hundi, so that much of that is sugar.
06:48All right, so we have a little number there.
06:51How much do you think you've spent today?
06:53I reckon that's about $125, $128.
06:56And what do you think?
06:59I'd probably say $120.
07:01Really?
07:02Yeah.
07:03It's expected to be quite low.
07:05It's extremely low.
07:06It's, well, because of the takeout that we have.
07:10Well, let me show you what the number is.
07:12You want to see what the number is?
07:13Yeah.
07:14Whoa.
07:15Oh.
07:16$155, but that's not an O number.
07:18No.
07:19That's a, why is it so low number?
07:21It's almost a concerning number.
07:23You know, I don't see value in $155.
07:26I see worry in, there's only two meals in there.
07:30Yeah.
07:31Where's the other five meals coming from?
07:33Yeah.
07:34$155 for two meals.
07:35You're right.
07:36That's not value.
07:37That's not good, is it?
07:38Let's go home and let's figure out how we can teach you to cook some food.
07:41Make this better.
07:42Yeah.
07:43At best, for $155, we've got two meals, so that's $75.
07:47Or possibly squeezing hard three at $50 each.
07:51That's not value, is it?
07:52It's a lot of money for a lot of snacks and nibbles, and that's about it.
07:56Michael and Ganesh run ahead for a sneaky poke around Jane and Bernie's kitchen.
08:00The pantry.
08:01Hello, pantry.
08:02Hello.
08:03Hello, pantry.
08:04Hello, lonely pantry.
08:06There's not much in here, is there?
08:07Mm-mm.
08:08Bit of spices.
08:09Nothing's gonna go right.
08:11Let's make a dish.
08:12No.
08:13Alright.
08:14Do you know what this screams?
08:15What?
08:16This screams, I don't cook much at home.
08:18Exactly.
08:20Okay.
08:21Tuesday fridge.
08:23Refrigerator is empty?
08:26What have we got?
08:27I feel like we're in, like, a student flat.
08:29Because there's, like, nothing in it.
08:31No, it's far too clean for a student flat.
08:33Yeah, good point.
08:34But, like, okay, what have we got?
08:35Two steaks, some eggs, a bit of ham.
08:38Just a few kind of odds and sods.
08:40This is not someone that cooks.
08:42No, there's not a lot in there.
08:43No.
08:44Alright, freezer.
08:45Oh.
08:46Oh.
08:47Oh, hello.
08:48There's all the goodness.
08:50Look at this stuff.
08:51Scotch filler.
08:52So they buy all the food with good intentions.
08:54They buy the food.
08:55They want to cook it.
08:57They're not quite sure what to do with it.
08:59They leave it in the freezer and forget about it.
09:01They need a plan.
09:02Plan.
09:03Everyone's confused.
09:05Time for some big answers on this tiny shop.
09:08Well, guys, this has got to be...
09:11There's nothing there.
09:12The smallest table.
09:14What did we spend our $155 on?
09:16I have no idea.
09:17I can't believe this little bit of food cost $155.
09:23And I can't believe how, when I look at this,
09:26I don't see any meals.
09:28I do.
09:29What do you see?
09:30Tell me.
09:31Silver side.
09:32Yes.
09:33Cabbage.
09:34Yes.
09:35One.
09:36Okay, that's one meal.
09:37And cold the next day with salad.
09:39Well done.
09:40Where is that salad part of?
09:41It's in the fridge.
09:42Oh.
09:43That is all very good.
09:44But how many nights do you cook at home?
09:47Depends how often the granddaughter visits.
09:50How much of this is you looking after your granddaughter?
09:52Well, certainly the meals.
09:54The silver side and the meals.
09:55Hang on a second.
09:56The meals are not for you.
09:57The meals are for the granddaughter.
09:58This whole show is back to front.
10:01I understand.
10:02If Lola wasn't coming over, you might even have left that out, I feel.
10:07Yes, probably.
10:08Possibly.
10:09Okay.
10:10So just get this right.
10:11Normally this show is all about the adults buying food for the kids.
10:17Which generally is all the stuff that the kids want.
10:20Yes.
10:21Not what this is.
10:25So what is this then?
10:26This is the stuff that you want.
10:30Pretty much.
10:31You guys are having way too much fun.
10:33What I see is, I see a freezer full of really good food.
10:36Like you've got lots of good meats in there, you've got some vegetables, but you're simply
10:39not cooking at home.
10:41We have good intentions because we do sometimes take our meat out in the morning.
10:46Yes, we do.
10:47And then we get home from work and think, bugger this.
10:52I don't know what I'm going to have with it.
10:53I can't stay mad at these guys.
10:56I hear that, I hear that, but I'm not listening to you.
11:00Okay.
11:01Okay, so let's look at some numbers.
11:03This is the part that I like.
11:04Yes.
11:05Let's do it.
11:06Today, what you see here was $155 worth of food.
11:11However, the minimum spend for a family of your size and your location to meet dietary
11:19requirements is $131.
11:22Oh.
11:23Oh.
11:24Wow.
11:25So you're very close.
11:26Yes.
11:27However, on top of that $155 that you spent today.
11:31Yeah.
11:32You go out and spend $274 a week on takeaways.
11:37We do.
11:39But that's not good.
11:40No.
11:42Smiling about it isn't the way to go because that totals to about $430 a week that you're
11:50spending.
11:51Wow.
11:52And it's just the two of you.
11:53Yep.
11:54That's a total of $22,300 a year.
11:56Wow.
11:57If you look at that grand spend and break down what's just good out of that spending.
12:03Yeah.
12:04I'm probably going to take away some silver cider, a bit of veggies and some mints.
12:07What's that?
12:08$25.
12:09That gives us over $400 of pretty much rubbish.
12:13Yeah.
12:14You need fresh ideas and you need to get healthier so your daughter and granddaughter can be proud
12:19of you.
12:20Yeah.
12:21All right.
12:22Fantastic.
12:23So new ideas, fast, quick ideas.
12:24Use what you've got.
12:25Yep.
12:26And these takeaways can go to bed.
12:28Are we all good to do this?
12:29We are good.
12:30We're up for it.
12:31Let's do that.
12:32Let's nail it.
12:33Let's go.
12:34Let's nail it.
12:35Let's go cook some food.
12:36We are ready to drive, really not getting quality food.
12:39So, you know, that's an eye opener.
12:41That's a wake up call.
12:43Bernie and Jane, they come home after work and they don't have anything that's pulled
12:48out.
12:49It's all frozen.
12:50Let's get takeaways.
12:51Money's not such a big deal for these two.
12:53It isn't.
12:54You know, they're empty nesters.
12:55Yeah.
12:56They're both working still.
12:57They are.
12:58But it's not about that.
12:59It's about the fact that they actually have to use their money the right way.
13:02And they've got to live a healthier life than what they are now.
13:05for what they are now 100 coming up jane and bernie smell something fishy in the kitchen
13:11seaweed salad who are they trying to kid and can mike and ganesh get these two cooking for two
13:20carefree couple jane and bernie are living the high life eating a diet of luxury takeaways and
13:25sugary snacks but all that is about to change with our eat well for less overhaul their usual
13:32unhealthy treats are now completely out of bounds with more healthy options packing the pantry
13:37the fridge has been completely transformed and the treasured takeaway menus are most definitely
13:42off limits oh my goodness gosh that's different isn't it look so we're not allowed none of this
13:50bernie i have no idea what i'm gonna do with those ingredients we can do deal with that
13:55well okay you're cooking because i don't know what i'm doing with that i don't know what that
13:59rest our hand out is there no i've never heard of that never heard of that okay shall we see
14:05what's in the fridge okay let's have a look at that i'm a bit nervous now look at the menus oh my
14:11goodness oh seaweed salad seaweed salad who are they trying to kid i've got no cheese feta a feta
14:21can i have a feta cheese sandwich okay i'm really a bit concerned now it's different isn't it it's
14:27a bit different vastly different we'll deal with it seaweed salad really do people eat seaweed
14:36jane and bernie love the ease of takeaways and will do anything to get out of doing the dishes
14:41so mike has come up with a no excuses quick and tasty one pot paella have you ever cooked
14:47a spanish paella no they're a great dish and i thought it would be a good dish to do today reason
14:54being is yes there's a little bit of preparation but once you actually get it into the oven walk
15:00away walk away do everything but go up the road and get takeaways because when you come back your
15:05dinner will be ready this one's got a little funny twist okay because we're actually going to use
15:09chicken wings so what we're going to do is we're going to take this chicken arm
15:14and we're going to slice through this part here i'll just hold this up so i can show you
15:18and then we're going to break that off there and then we're actually going to cut
15:23all the way through and then what we have is we have a winglet and a chicken arm continue cutting
15:31all the chicken wings and put them on a plate ready to season coat with a few cracks of salt then cover
15:37the wings and one tablespoon of oil always season and oil the meat don't oil the pan right reason
15:46being you oil the meat what stays on the meat is all that you need the excess oil stays behind on the
15:54plate if you take the oil and then you put it into the pan and go glug glug glug then you get your
15:59chicken and you put it into that oil a you've added too much oil to the pan and b by the time you take
16:05your chicken you drop it into that oil the oil is burnt so you're taking your delicious chicken
16:11and you're frying it in burnt oil saute the chicken wings turning a few times until lightly golden
16:16then set aside thinly slice some flavor packed chorizo sausage then dice one red onion and chop four
16:22cloves of garlic de-seed and roughly cut two red peppers before adding them into the hot pan we're going
16:28saute these off just to bring out the aroma of the gut you can smell it you know that that's you know
16:37goodness in a pan there that aroma that's coming out that will entice anyone that's coming into this
16:42house to walk straight into this kitchen and go what are you cooking because that smells amazing
16:47all important chorizo sausage that goes in next add paella or short grain rice a splash of red wine
16:54a cup of frozen peas tomato paste and smoked paprika then give it a good stir before adding chicken stock
17:01arrange the chicken back into the pan put the oven proof pan into a preheated oven for 30 minutes
17:08until all the stock is absorbed and the rice is cooked let the paella rest to soak up any remaining
17:13juices then season with salt and pepper and garnish with some parsley spring onion and lemon
17:19did you find that easy enough it was and you chop chop chop saute saute put it into the oven faster
17:26then you could probably pick up a phone and order takeaways on a friday night probably
17:31and you've got something so much better yep okay shall we go and eat it let's give it a go
17:36okay we're gonna taste this bad boy it's heavy you feel that it definitely is
17:40oh wow did you make that with the help with some help from my friends really yeah
17:50can't wait to try that serve it up okay do it bernie you cooked it you served it but you know what
17:57get a bit of lemon you don't need to do the dishes oh really looks pretty flash
18:04yes this one pot paella is packed with flavor and fresh healthy ingredients but are the family
18:10impressed this is beautiful so what do you reckon would you cook this again ah definitely when i first
18:15saw the list of ingredients i was a bit overwhelmed but it's really just a simply a matter of cutting
18:19them up sauteing them off adding the liquids and we're away he's up he's in yeah this is actually all
18:27cooking that's right cutting it up sauteing it off putting it in that's all it is it's quite simple
18:33yeah yeah would you like me to cook this again when you come around off yeah it's really delicious
18:38you reckon you'd help me yeah yeah cool ole the spanish sensation comes in at just four dollars
18:44seventy per serve and better still the dishes can wait with the first recipe a success time for our
18:50first food swap starting with jane and bernie's favorite ginger beer okay cheers
18:57taste different it's not as definitely not as gingery and it's it's sweeter it's a bit bland
19:05to be honest it's not our usual brand i don't think i'd buy that one no i mean it's okay but i
19:10wouldn't you know if i had a choice i'd stick with what we get yeah yeah we have swapped it for a cheaper
19:16brand but will jane and bernie be persuaded when they find out this one is lower in sodium and sugar
19:22than their usual brand our next swap requires an immediate taste test from vanilla latte aficionado
19:29jane okay going in
19:33it's different it is different
19:38i honestly think i could get used to this yeah because i can get stuck in my ways
19:43and i've got to be a bit more open don't laugh don't be laughing at that no it's true
19:50so i've got to be quite open-minded and honest because obviously there's a reason for all of this
19:55but yes i i could get used to this this new option is lower in sugar and fat and if jane
20:01makes this a permanent swap she will also notice some sweet savings on the weekly food bill
20:07coming up ganesh shakes things up with shakshuka don't burn your nose and which feta will cream it
20:14with our taste testers oh that's my favorite so far
20:22the eat well for less team are helping jane and bernie get back in the kitchen
20:26cooking fresh healthy meals to stop their takeaways treats and food wastage typical weekly shop a quarter
20:32of that is wasted especially with vegetables the demand for healthy salad products is increasing
20:39but at the same time it's one of the top five items thrown out every week by kiwi households
20:45so ganesh has come to leader brands in sunny gisborne to see how they are trying to reduce salad waste
20:50g'day how are you richard richard g'day grant ganesh nice to meet you now the two of you look like
20:55you've known each other for a while is that true yeah that's for sure in fact countdown's been
20:59dealing with leader brand for over 25 years so we have to work really closely together to make sure
21:03that we've got salads on the shelf every day for our customers we're looking at hey not just what
21:08the customer wants but what can we grow sustainably and also what other innovations can we bring can we
21:13bring new salads new varieties new tastes to the table now this is the most incredibly beautiful field
21:20what varieties do we have here so we've got seven different varieties in hand so we're looking at rocket
21:25right here yeah a little bit of coriander behind you some red mustard some mizuna some red tatsoi
21:31so all of these are going into the fresh salads they're mostly masculine mixes these fresh salads
21:36are chilled washed and air dried all year round in new zealand's most modern salad production facility
21:42and what goes into each bag is a process in itself who decides what goes into what so we decide what
21:48varieties can go into each bag so they have the right flavor and the right color so they look good on the
21:53plate as well you're looking out for us making sure the bag looks good you're looking out for us
21:57making sure what goes in the bag is good what goes in the bag is good what we're doing is good for the
22:02environment and it tastes good leader brand grows around 3 500 hectares of fresh produce each year across
22:08farms in canterbury and right here in gisborne i've got to try some of this rocket
22:14i have my rocket bit of olive oil salt and pepper that's it no lemon no vinegar i just want to taste the rocket
22:21you know smaller bagged salad is one way leader brands and countdown are working together to
22:25reduce waste without compromising on freshness and quality recently we just launched a single
22:31serve bag and what that's about it's enough salad for one or two people they eat the whole salad there's
22:36no waste and then there's a medium-sized bag if you've got a family and a large bag if you eat a huge
22:41amount of salad no soggy salad so people eat more salad right that's all we want but more importantly
22:46can i ride the truck oh yes let's go come on boys back in teatatu and ganesh has a middle eastern
22:53recipe to encourage jane and bernie to get cooking for two shakshuka is a dish that combines eggs
22:58tomatoes and spices to create the perfect meal for any time of the day ganesh's shakshuka yeah i wonder
23:05what that's like this is gonna be fun jane starts by chopping one red capsicum while bernie chops an onion
23:13and three cloves of garlic add the capsicum onion and garlic to a hot pan with a dash of olive oil
23:18and saute until caramelized put in tomato paste some chili flakes and moroccan spice and mix together
23:25it smells really good oh that smells good yeah i know don't burn your nose pour in two tins of tomatoes
23:30and fresh coriander stems keep stirring and season to taste remove from the heat then it's time for the
23:36hero of the dish the eggs this looks so different i've never done anything like this before it's a
23:42hell of a way to poke eggs isn't it place into a preheated 180 degree oven and fan bake for eight
23:49to ten minutes until the eggs are poached oh oh look at that don't touch the handle to finish top with
23:59some crumbled feta scatter over coriander leaves and serve with pita bread one pot winner shakshuka is an
24:05entire meal in a dish and all this for a very affordable four dollars per serve yum let's do
24:12this this will be a keeper what do you reckon oh that does taste good actually this would be a good
24:21dish if we had people over for brunch yeah absolutely they wouldn't believe we cooked it
24:26they'd think we'd taken cooking lessons but we did take cooking lessons with jane and bernie trying new
24:33tastes like feta now is the perfect time to put feta to our group test we're at auckland harley
24:39davidson to see if the staff are as particular about feta as they are about bikes i like to
24:44eat feta straight out of the container i like to make platters and antipestos so feta is probably a
24:49accessory effort on there yeah and when it comes to selecting their cheese these riders are no amateurs
24:55i'd say i'd go for a feta that holds its shape not only looks good but has a really good taste like
24:59saltiness today our riders will be tasting adela a handcrafted european feta creamy feta from galaxy
25:08a reduced salt feta from boton door mainland's creamy feta and the lowest priced of the pack
25:16supermarket own brand feta they are often racing first up is mainland i'm not shy so i'm getting in
25:23first i'm gonna go over that big piece of that feels like i've just drunk sea water sharp at first
25:28eh but then after it's quite nice actually i quite liked it a promising start next is the most expensive
25:36adela it's that real stinky like blue cheese like my mum would probably like that yeah we got some water
25:44oh gross not a crowd favorite will the supermarket own brand race into the lead it's nice and the
25:52flavor's not so strong i think that one is something that you can do a lot with you can add it to like
25:57pizza at least that red one won't give you ptsd like the orange one like high praise but will galaxy be
26:05the brightest star oh that's soft that's fluffy that's good to me not my flavor he's put the tongue
26:12to roof your mouth and it just melts well that's my favorite so far that's a good contender green light
26:18lastly bouton doors middle of the road in price but could it be number one in taste
26:23oh that's strong yeah i might even have another piece it's got everything that you would want i think
26:30flavor creaminess i like it i like it a lot it just melts in your mouth so which feta is better
26:39the winner is the bouton door reduced salt feta proving you don't always need to go for the most
26:44expensive option to get the best taste it held its shape it was flavorsome but it wasn't overpowering
26:52from cheese to chutney let's put jane's beloved sandwich spread to the test with another food swap
26:58would you like half or a quarter because i have a quarter okay i'll have a main size half there you
27:05go okay
27:09i like it do you it's quite tarty with the vinegar you think you get used to that no no definitely
27:16it's definitive isn't it yeah it'd be nice in a toasted sandwich oh yeah we have switched this one
27:22and while it may be healthier is it a swap too far for jane lola is the driving force behind jane
27:29and bernie's healthy eating overhaul so right now it's time for some grandmother granddaughter baking
27:35time today we are making mike's canned crumble oh that'll be interesting something we haven't made
27:42before lola pours maple syrup vanilla essence and one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice into a bowl
27:49add chopped pears and mixed berries to the liquid mixture and stir before pouring into a shallow baking dish
27:54oh look at that all that sauce that looks good lola if you give that a shake that'll flatten out
28:05to make the crumble topping combine oats coconut sugar baking powder and poppy seeds
28:11oh this is the mucky bit you like this bit yes i do not like this bit okay are you gonna volunteer
28:18i shall vote yay cut butter into cubes before adding to the crumble mixture rub the butter into
28:25the dry ingredients until crumbly and add a pinch of salt scatter the crumble mix over the layer of
28:31berries i think we're ready now we're going to place it in the oven cook until the topping starts
28:37to brown and serve hot with vanilla ice cream okay shall i whack her in place into an oven preheated to 200 degrees
28:45well this looks so yummy and it smells and the ice cream is melting beautifully oh gosh so many berries
28:57in here i know that's really good how long was it lola in the oven maybe 20 minutes half an hour max
29:06but much healthier version than absolutely if you make a standard crumble topping so wow lol this is
29:13the second day in a row we've come and had something healthy and beautiful delicious yeah what do you
29:18think about that pretty strange strange indeed maybe all this healthy talk is starting to sink in
29:27coming up have we saved the best for last two words seaweed salad concerns me so much
29:33we're back with jane and bernie whose healthy food revolution is now in full swing jane's beloved
29:46breakfast topping marmalade is next for the food swap treatment so i'm trying this marmalade as you know
29:52me and my marmalade and it's um it's actually quite nice you don't you don't like the lumpy bits do you
29:58has it got too much in there it's okay looks fine yeah tastes good it tastes different it's not quite
30:05as sweet okay but it tastes nice okay i would buy this good if it's different if it's different we'll
30:11wait and see but i do like it it's a yes from jane and it's a nice little saving of this new marmalade
30:17sticks the takeaways these two consume are not only a hit on their wallet but also their health
30:23so ganesh has an asian dish that is high in heart healthy fats from fish avocado and seeds and packed
30:29full of vitamins and antioxidants so this is a salmon sushi bowl now what's great about doing food like
30:37this it's fresh yeah it's good for you low in cholesterol the rice that we're using high in
30:44antioxidants and it's going to really look after you we're going to use black rice today it's very fine
30:50but secret with the black rice don't wash it why because the antioxidants are on the rice
30:57so you want to keep them in there that's the stuff that's going to be good for you all right it's
31:02going to look after you all right so let's get the rice in there for two cups of rice add three and a
31:08half cups of water and bring it to the boil trim the bottoms of the bok choy and separate the leaves
31:15give them a good wash before adding japanese rice vinegar and soy sauce mix it all together
31:20and then place in the fridge for 30 minutes to pickle check on the rice and have a quick taste
31:26have you had miso before i've had miso soup great so you know exactly what it's like and the best
31:31thing about miso is it's great for your gut health okay right it looks after you make sure that you're
31:36really strong and your system works really well to make the pickle for the carrot sticks add miso paste
31:41grated ginger chili flakes grated garlic and sugar to balance the acidity give it a good mix and put
31:48into the fridge and let the flavors work their magic beautiful piece of salmon one centimeter cubes all
31:54right it means that the soy and the sesame get in there coat the fresh salmon cubes in sesame oil soy
32:02sauce and sesame seeds mix through so everything is coated evenly prep a nice ripe avocado and the
32:09pickled bok choy ready to assemble drain the rice then it's time to put it all together place some rice
32:16in the bottom then pile on the remaining ingredients edamame beans the pickled bok choy and carrots the
32:22succulent salmon and the avocado okay i'm putting the seaweed in which concerns me so much yes but
32:30there's always a but but you're willing to try it absolutely going to that's all i'm asking for
32:36look at that oh look completely different but just as delicious they both look yummy lovely
32:42shall we go and eat it let's do it fantastic after you thank you if it tastes as good as it looks this is
32:48one dish sure to be a regular fixture on jane and bernie's takeaway free meal plan
32:53it's a visual symphony it's beautiful isn't it that's a feast on the eyes he's happy with that
32:59and the smell shall we see what it tastes like hell yeah let's get into it i can't believe come on now
33:06the salmon beautiful i like the feel of the salmon in my mouth it's velvety it's velvety that's what it's
33:13meant to be yeah and the seaweed i am so surprised that i like the seaweed salad and it's so good for you
33:19so is this a success oh no question about it this is a goer yeah we're doing this again i'm loving
33:27this high five ganesha's sushi bowl comes in at eight dollars sixty per serving but what about
33:32store-bought so-called healthy takeaways is there such a thing amanda brian is here to tell us what
33:39we should watch out for amanda what do we have here so i've brought along today a selection of
33:44takeaways that might be considered a bit more healthy than your usual burger fries and pizza
33:50and what i would like you to do is select the option that you think is the healthiest
33:54and what have we got here so we have a tuna mayo and avocado sushi a chicken caesar salad a falafel
34:02and bean salad with avocado and then a crispy chicken wrap you start i'm looking at the sushi i'm going
34:07yes sushi is probably quite healthy but a lot of carbohydrates looking at the caesar salad those are
34:12some big chunks of iceberg lettuce i'm looking at the falafel salad and i'm thinking to myself
34:17falafel high protein this feels really healthy to me fried chicken dead carbohydrates that's my least
34:23favorite i'm going to go caesar salad for the healthiest for me and my number one is the falafel
34:29salad so ganesh you're not wrong with the falafel bean salad there that is a great choice it's got lots
34:34of vegetable lots of nutrients fiber to keep you full also the protein from the falafel that's going to be
34:40good for you too and the healthy fats from the avocado but one thing we probably can't see from
34:45all these meals just sitting here is they're actually all high in sodium we know that too much sodium is
34:50not a good thing for our risk of high blood pressure how do you avoid the pitfalls when you're after a
34:56healthier takeaway option so there's a couple of key things that we need to be mindful of so sauces is
35:01one thing that can really push up the sodium even the fat content in a meal you can actually ask for
35:08the sauce to go on the side with the crispy chicken wrap there it's deep fried so we can just ask for
35:14something to be grilled or baked a different choice so what you're saying is be confident with what you
35:19want because you're paying for it absolutely you're the customer pay for the meal that you want
35:24ultimately with takeaways we only want to be having them as an occasional thing enjoying them when we have
35:30them but making sure we're having the majority of our meals at home so we know exactly what's going
35:35in them it's been a big week of change for empty nesters jane and bernie with takeaways strictly off
35:41limits they've been learning to cook healthy meals for two but have they finally kicked their fast food
35:47habit what do you reckon mike jane and bernie jane and bernie we've given them the skills
35:54we've given them the tips we've also given them some really fast and healthy recipes so it's really
36:02up to them now isn't it what it is they've got to do it for their daughter and their granddaughter
36:07absolutely do you think they've done it i hope so here we are knockity knock you ready do it
36:16alicia michael are you well i'm well good to see you bernie jane and bernie
36:25it feels like we've been away for so long mike and i were talking about this earlier on we both have
36:31daughters if our daughters had come up to us and said we're really worried about your health i would do
36:35anything in my power so would he yeah to sort ourselves out so how have you been really good
36:41yeah really yeah we left you with some pretty incredible dishes yeah did you find them fast
36:47and easy and tasty so tasty run us through them so there was the paella you know what i liked about
36:54that quick easy and could be a base for a whole bunch of things totally oh a berry crumble yes lola
37:01help me with that did you serve it with a little bit of vanilla ice cream we did stop it yeah and
37:06then we had the shakshuka oh the paste and again you can switch it out for other things you made me
37:14so happy seeing these yeah you could i think it's great that you've you've taken the recipes and they
37:19were given you yeah you've made them and probably foremost you've actually enjoyed yeah yeah thoroughly
37:25absolutely yeah the fact that you're talking about cooking more yeah and reducing the amount of
37:29takeaways we've already won but let's see if we can actually save you some money while we're at it
37:34excellent goodie let's do that let's do it here we go i love this part this is the best all right
37:43let's talk about some of the things that you had big crosses on and some of the things you had to try
37:48over the week how'd you go with marmalade looks fine yeah it tastes different but i would buy this swap
37:57oh oh that was fast that's too easy let's talk about this why was it so simple it tasted different
38:04it actually wasn't as sweet as the one i usually buy but it was really good so you enjoyed it i did and
38:12when you say swap you're saying i'm happy to swap i'm happy to swap and i believe it was swapped from
38:17what i normally get well it was a swap oh there you go that's what you had and it was delicious it
38:26was and you're happy yes but here's something else that's delicious saving of 190 per jar it is good
38:33because i probably have a jar of fortnight wow i have it most mornings there you go yeah so two bucks
38:39we're saving about 50 bucks a year but you know what it all adds up it does in this game yep all
38:44right so that's a swap yep fantastic okay so it's the end of the day you reach into the fridge and
38:49you grab a nice cold ginger beer okay cheers it's a bit bland to be honest it's not our usual brand
38:58i don't think i'd buy that one i didn't like it his face changes when he doesn't like something i've
39:04just noticed and yes it was a swap but that's how much you will save it's got less sugar and it's
39:15cheaper is it worth a swap i've got to be honest i think i would just cut right back on the frequency
39:24you're making us really happy good answer that's fantastic i mean if you're gonna if you're gonna eat
39:29something or drink something you've got to enjoy it so you have the expensive stuff but less of it
39:34correct so that's not a swap but um you can't win them all so the chutney i like it do you it's quite
39:43tarty with the vinegar they'd be nice in a toasted sandwich oh no yeah i didn't like the chutney oh oh
39:50boy she's got her arms and her hips oh i'm in trouble we've got a straight no we've got a straight
39:55no on that one here's the kicker i loved the chutney oh boy all right domestic how long have you been
40:02married i think we're all right we've been together a long time well let's see if it was a swap or not
40:08yes it was a swap will this price saving change your mind it won't change my mind we might be buying two
40:19types oh hang on a second i don't know whether that's not how the show works i'm sorry no we don't
40:26want to double down on the chutney in the fridge for two people but what do you reckon do you reckon
40:31you'll go down this road jane's more a chutney eater than i am there you go so there you go there
40:36you go possibly not as well yes okay okay that's all right that's cool we tried we can give you that one
40:42now the next one i think was quite a big one because it was one of the biggest purchases in
40:48your original shop can you think of what i'm saying coffee i'm a bit scared only one way to find out
40:57it's different it is different i could get used to this but it actually wasn't too bad
41:03surprisingly because i do love what i buy normally because that packet that you had was a bulk packet
41:10yes i think it had like 26 servings in it yeah we did in fact swap it and we swapped them for
41:15this guy so your pack was a big monster pack this is a smaller pack there's 10 servings in this this
41:20also has less sugar less fat oh and a saving of 2.30 win-win yeah win-win for sure that's 23 cents yeah
41:30every time you put one of those into a cup and have loose and the health reasons alone yeah exactly
41:36goody yep goody good job team good job i'm happy with these swaps it's good for you guys because
41:42we've managed to save you some money yes you'll remember 155 supermarket shop 274 takeaways
41:51brought it up to 4 30 for two of you that's a lot yep we have halved your takeaway bill for the week
41:59you could go further yeah you could cut it down to one night a week and have it as something that you do
42:03on a friday night we've saved you about 92 net a week but you have to commit to cooking more meals
42:12yeah but that adds up to about 4 800 a year in savings it's a holiday straight away the numbers
42:20sung out to me 92 a week 4 800 a year here's the real bonus 5 10 15 years on our life to spend with
42:28our kids yeah exactly yes so do we have a commitment you do you how many days a week you're going to cook
42:34now i reckon six at least she's taking it up she's taking it up a notch yeah you both have a real
42:41adventurous spirit that's why you've come this far so hold on to that yeah top job yeah top job good job
42:47that was an absolute pleasure you've done very well thank you very well you're two amazing people
42:53so glad we've done this because we've learned from it and we we committed to it so we're going to
42:59benefit from this um financially and health wise so you can't not be happy about it yeah and we're
43:06doing it together that's the big thing i think that went well that went really well you know what we
43:12should do we should turn up next week for dinner what are you doing on wednesday he did invite us back
43:16didn't we wednesday can you do wednesday uh possibly what about tuesday i'll do tuesday tuesday i've
43:21got that thing on tuesday wednesday then i still got that thing on wednesday oh you got a thing
43:25on wednesday i gotta check about the thing on tuesday if it clashes with the thing on wednesday
43:28okay then we'll check on friday that was on the friday friday would be a good night
43:31tuesday friday exactly unannounced what are you going to wear i'll just go on this i'm ready shorts baby
