00:00So the scene is set for the second match in Group A to begin.
00:05A chance, of course, for Terry Venables and the England Party
00:07to size up their other opponents for a place in the quarterfinals.
00:16And it's Holland in their famous orange jerseys who get us underway,
00:21attacking from left to right Scotland, all in blue.
00:24And Scotland believing that this is their opportunity
00:27to prove that they're here on merit
00:29and indeed that they intend to go further in the competition
00:33than just the opening phase,
00:34something they've never done in eight previous attempts
00:37in World Cups and European Championships.
00:43There's a testing ball straight away for the Scottish defence.
00:46Taumann's almost on the end of it.
00:49Boyd managed to get it clear.
00:51And an excellent challenge by McCall
00:53relieves that immediate pressure on the Scottish goal,
00:56but the danger hasn't gone yet.
01:00Vicka on the left.
01:02Looking for Taumann far post
01:04and a nervous sort of opening, Ron Atkinson,
01:06by the Scottish defenders.
01:08Yes, but a very, very bright start from the Dutch.
01:11Passing the ball about,
01:12which they will do for the most of the game.
01:14One and two touch,
01:14popping it around,
01:15changing the scene all the while.
01:18And that's where the Scots defence particularly
01:21have got to be looking around and concentrating.
01:24One solo strike.
01:29Calderwood has given it away.
01:31And there's danger here,
01:32particularly with Taumann in a good position in the middle
01:34if they can pull the ball back.
01:35Brilliant save by Gorham
01:37and Taumann hits the rebound over the bar.
01:40Gorham did brilliantly then
01:42and fully justified his manager's decision to select him
01:46in that one moment, Ron.
01:48That might be the save of the tournament.
01:50In fact, I don't think you'll see a better one than that.
01:52Here you see Bergkamp
01:53completely outstripping the defence.
01:56Henry almost heads him up,
01:57picks his spot,
01:58and that's a magnificent save from Cedar.
02:01And Taumann really should have been back on target,
02:03but he's kept them well in the game, Andy Gorham there.
02:06Magnificent save.
02:09Hits go over the corner.
02:11Bojada goes up for it
02:12and Scotland lost it.
02:14It cleared off the line.
02:14There was a big appeal for a handball.
02:17Oh, it looked a penalty to me, that.
02:19That was every bit as much as the one at Wembley, I would guess.
02:24Scotland have had a moment there, I think.
02:27Scotland have got away with it.
02:28Six minutes gone.
02:30They could have found themselves a goal behind
02:31and, indeed, they could have conceded a penalty.
02:34McAllister coming forward.
02:35Excellent challenge by Seydal.
02:37I think it's also fair to say it should have been a goal.
02:40I mean, it was another missed chance in actual fact, Alan,
02:44whether it was a penalty or not.
02:48Here's Taumann again.
02:50Bergkamp in a good position.
02:52So too is Vitsker.
02:53On the far post from Scotland,
02:54in a bit of trouble again
02:55as Cruyff came in behind him.
02:57But I think that was a foul by the Dutch player.
03:00Indeed, it was.
03:00And this is the moment when Scotland came perilously close
03:07to conceding a penalty.
03:09It was that handball.
03:10It certainly looked as though it might have been by Collins.
03:14To deny him room for the shot.
03:17But Scotland having their period of possession now.
03:19McAllister to Boyd.
03:24Boyd sees a route open up and finds McAllister.
03:27If he had only caught that one cleanly.
03:31Good play from Scotland.
03:32Good play from Tommy Boyd.
03:34Gary McAllister, a guy running from midfield.
03:37You'd want to go into those positions.
03:39You'd want to have the ball.
03:40He's tried for a placement,
03:42whereas he could have maybe gone a little bit further.
03:44And you know how McAllister can crack them.
03:47He's gone for a little placement there.
03:48He's hit it a little bit early, actually.
03:51If anybody else but Gary McAllister is going to have a dip at this.
03:54It's perfect territory for the Leeds United man and the Scotland skipper.
03:59And van der Sar show one or two nervous moments in the Champions League final from set pieces.
04:04Do you remember?
04:05I certainly don't like the way he parried the first one.
04:07That's reminiscent of that game in Rome, isn't it?
04:10McAllister lifts it over the wall.
04:12It was a brilliant effort.
04:13And in fairness to van der Sar,
04:15he was more than equal to it.
04:16Great goalkeeping.
04:17Very accurate.
04:19Very good one.
04:21Possibly needed a little bit more pace on it, didn't he?
04:24He's got it up and he's got it down.
04:26You see, but just comfortable enough for the goalkeeper to make it, say.
04:29A little bit more pace might have had him in bother.
04:32McAllister will take the corner himself.
04:33Scotland have sent the heavy artillery forward.
04:36Hendry in particular.
04:37It's gone over his head, though.
04:39McCall playing it back in to Hendry, in fact.
04:42He couldn't quite get the ball threaded back to his teammate.
04:45This is Vichka now for Holland.
04:47Well, the signs are for Scotland
04:52that when they do apply a little bit of pressure
04:55on the Dutch defence,
04:57they're creaking slightly.
04:58On all the set plays, it's noticeable
05:00that they try and aim for the space that Hendry's not.
05:05I mean, Dukoc gets against him,
05:06and I think you watch,
05:07you'll try and run Hendry out the way here.
05:12We had to get into that near post again,
05:14and danger for Scotland once more,
05:15and it was a brilliant challenge by McCall
05:18that rescued them once again.
05:21the cock.
05:23Poised.
05:24He's injured himself in the process,
05:26and it looked another goal.
05:29Odds on here.
05:30Brilliant tackle by McCall
05:32as Gorham slid in.
05:33Great retrieving that,
05:34but it's surprising how many problems
05:36they're having of,
05:37just if you like,
05:38Britain but to set plays.
05:40There's a deep cross to Boer,
05:41heading it back into the danger zone,
05:43and Bergkamp couldn't get it
05:44through the crowd of players.
05:46Scotland continue to live dangerously.
05:51But it's not out of choice.
05:54Reisiger with a very short back pass there,
05:57and Wittger complaining
05:58that as he played the ball back to his keeper,
06:00Gallagher just caught him.
06:02The one thing Craig Brown wouldn't have thought,
06:03okay,
06:04he'd have anticipated maybe
06:05getting caught on a given go.
06:07Here it is.
06:08Have Scotland done their homework?
06:11Do they know what to expect?
06:13Or the Holland have a surprise
06:15up their sleeves here?
06:25It is Wittger,
06:26and it's a very well-struck effort
06:28that was always travelling too high
06:30by Richard Wittger,
06:33who made a couple of appearances
06:34with Blackburn Rovers this season.
06:36They won the championship
06:37as a substitute.
06:38He was on loan from Barcelona at the time.
06:41Just moved back to Ajax
06:42after two years
06:43with the French team Bordeaux,
06:46for whom he played in the UEFA Cup final.
06:48Of course, Hiddink,
06:49who took over
06:49halfway through the qualifying competition,
06:52again with an important interception.
06:55And there's the long ball
06:56by McAllister for Booth to chase.
06:58Boer has seemed to be tugging him back.
07:00He needs some help here, does he?
07:01And he's getting it now from Jury,
07:03and also behind him from Gallagher.
07:05And McAllister's in a great position
07:07for Scotland here.
07:08Can he make something of it?
07:10Immediately he crossed.
07:11The linesman raised his flag
07:13offside
07:14against Scott Brood in the middle.
07:18What a promising attack by Scotland, right?
07:21Very much, and I think that's the final whistle
07:23for half-time anyway.
07:24But that would have been a big,
07:27big note for him to finish on.
07:29McAllister just singling to the crowd there.
07:32Keep at it.
07:34Well, Holland certainly played
07:36some delightful football
07:37and created quite a few scoring opportunities
07:41in that game.
07:42But the important thing for Scotland
07:44was that, thanks in particular
07:45to Gorham's heroics very early on here,
07:48and one or two moments of good fortune,
07:50they've held on.
07:52The half-time score
07:53at Villa Park.
07:55Holland 0, Scotland 0.
07:58Replacing Scott Booth.
08:01And one assumes he will just fit
08:03automatically into that role,
08:04although he scored most of his goals
08:06for Chelsea from a position
08:08just behind the strikers.
08:10He has never actually scored
08:14for Scotland, incidentally,
08:15in his 11 previous internationals.
08:17Spencer on for Booth.
08:19The only change, as far as we can see,
08:20on either side,
08:21and just looking around quickly,
08:23the Dutch, I can confirm that.
08:26Scotland now attacking the goal
08:27to our right,
08:28behind which thousands of noisy
08:31and colourful Dutch supporters
08:33are gathered.
08:33So can this new-look Scottish attack
08:38unlock a very, very impressive
08:42Netherlands defence,
08:45which apart from free kicks
08:47and that lovely move
08:48involving Boyd and McAllister
08:50have looked fairly comfortable.
08:53Seidoff beaten to it, though,
08:54by Gallagher,
08:55who's worked really hard,
08:57as indeed all the Scottish players have,
08:59against a team of such talent in possession,
09:01you've got to keep working.
09:02Here's Spencer.
09:04Tries to set it up for McAllister.
09:07And he hit that one with power,
09:09but unfortunately,
09:10not the accuracy to match.
09:14Good start, though, by Scotland, Ron.
09:15Yeah, I mean,
09:16that's a nice little start
09:17for John Spencer.
09:18He's set up,
09:18he's teed him up here,
09:20and I think that
09:21Gary McAllister would expect
09:22to be on target there.
09:26Here's Jordi for Holland.
09:28Straight into trouble.
09:29McKimmy did well.
09:30Vickka
09:32sweeps it out to De Boer on the right.
09:37Boyd barring the way to goal
09:39that he's got inside him.
09:40Oh, brilliant play by De Boer!
09:46Excellent effort by Ronald De Boer.
09:49He began as a striker
09:51and looked as though
09:53he remembered a little bit
09:53of the upbringing then.
09:56Come on,
09:56a good, strong run.
09:57They've managed to force him off
09:59to his less favoured foot.
10:01He hasn't really got round it,
10:03but...
10:03Scotland have started this half well.
10:07They're hustling and hassling
10:09the Dutch players
10:10and they look a bit troubled
10:12at the moment.
10:13Gallagher.
10:14Is that a foul?
10:15I must say I thought so,
10:17but the referee didn't.
10:18I think you hit a key word there,
10:21respect.
10:22I think what Craig Brown's
10:23probably said is,
10:24hey, come on.
10:25Well, that's the one
10:26they've looked for,
10:26the one over the top.
10:27To Talman.
10:28Talman can catch his face.
10:29Coming into the middle
10:30is Seedorf!
10:32Had he headed that
10:33any other way
10:33other than downwards,
10:35which I think the coaches
10:36will tell you
10:36you always should do,
10:37that would have been a goal.
10:39Well, that's another let-off.
10:41Just thinking how well
10:42Scotland had started the game.
10:44The first attempt,
10:45they've managed to get
10:46Talman in at the back
10:47of the defence.
10:48A quality ball.
10:49Seedorf arriving late
10:50into the box.
10:54I'm surprised every time
10:55McKimmy's confronted
10:57by Jordi.
10:58He's pushed him infield.
11:00He doesn't look comfortable,
11:01Jordi, when they push him
11:02out onto his left foot.
11:04I would have thought
11:04they should have just
11:05tensed him away
11:05into the corner flag areas now.
11:08Twelve corners to one,
11:09Hollandhead.
11:13And that's a dangerous ball in
11:14and Henry got it back.
11:16Off his own line virtually
11:17and Calderwood hacks it clear.
11:20And Scotland have survived
11:21another very, very near thing.
11:23But here's Seedorf
11:24lining up the shot
11:25and it deflected away
11:26off McAllister for a corner.
11:29It really is incredible
11:30the number of opportunities
11:32that Holland have had
11:33from corners.
11:35When it's usually,
11:36usually the result of
11:37overhitting, missing,
11:39missing Henry out it,
11:40hitting a deep one.
11:42I don't think this will change again.
11:43I think they'll aim to the spot
11:44where Henry isn't.
11:46Henry's at the near post
11:47now against
11:47all they've done, George.
11:50And to Scotland's
11:51great relief as well.
11:52Very poor delivery there.
11:53But still,
11:59Holland
11:59have possession
12:01and Scotland
12:02have all their men
12:03in their own heart now.
12:04and even the
12:07defendable harder
12:08has come forward.
12:10Whips one in
12:11towards Bergkamp
12:12which is
12:13Klibert on the far post.
12:14It wasn't a very good cross.
12:16McAllister's clearance
12:16however has gone to Davids.
12:18That was a good challenge
12:19but still
12:19the ball
12:20seems inevitably
12:21drawn to Holland now
12:23like
12:23Mayan Firlings
12:25to a magnet.
12:26Seedorf
12:26taking on McAllister.
12:28Henry's cross
12:29is clear.
12:29Playback by Winter.
12:32That was handball
12:33I think by Klibert.
12:35Yes.
12:36He just wondered
12:36are we national heroes
12:37tonight?
12:38If they can hang on
12:38to this one.
12:39They'll draw
12:39against one of the
12:41favourites
12:42Scotland.
12:43He'll be more than happy.
12:48Koku drives it in
12:50over Henry's head.
12:51Playback in
12:52and Klibert
12:53got the shot in
12:54and again.
12:56And they've just got
12:56enough bodies in the way.
12:58Another corner.
13:00The pressure continues.
13:02You know the amazing thing
13:03is the number of times
13:04that the ball
13:05actually goes over
13:06a Scottish head
13:07from the first ball in.
13:11Can Scotland
13:12hold on here
13:13against this
13:14enormous late
13:15pressure from Holland?
13:16Four minutes to go
13:18and Hollander
13:18really turning
13:20the screw now.
13:21A succession of
13:22corners
13:22and shocks
13:23into the
13:26packed penalty area.
13:27But Scotland
13:28are holding out
13:29and make
13:30no mistake
13:31a draw here
13:31for Scotland
13:32will be a
13:33tremendous result.
13:38It would also
13:39have no doubt
13:39the England
13:40party
13:41watching at home
13:43or in the hotel
13:43would regard
13:44as a very good result
13:45for England as well.
13:48It would mean
13:48that all four teams
13:49in the group
13:50have got off to
13:50a one-point start
13:52to the championships.
13:54But also,
13:55of course,
13:55Holland,
13:56they'll be facing
13:56a very much
13:57pumped-up Scotland
13:58on Saturday.
13:58Coram's clearance
14:03picks out Boyd,
14:05Spencer,
14:07McAllister,
14:09well-played Scotland,
14:10good stuff.
14:15One ball
14:16for Jury
14:16to chase.
14:19And the throw-in
14:20greeted
14:21with a roar
14:22from the Scottish
14:22end,
14:23the ball
14:23had gone
14:24into the back
14:24of Holland's neck.
14:25They recognise
14:26the fact
14:27that that's taken
14:28pressure
14:28off their defenders
14:30and my goodness,
14:30they need
14:31a bit of a break.
14:34McKinley
14:34just keep the ball
14:36in the corner now
14:37will be the instruction.
14:39Keep it in this half
14:40anyway.
14:46Jury's doing well.
14:48Did exactly
14:48the right thing.
14:50About another
14:5120 seconds
14:51he's just ticked away.
14:54So that's all
14:55credit to the Scots.
14:57They forced
14:57Holland into
14:58that sort of
14:58frustration.
15:00The Scottish fans
15:01believe the job
15:02is almost done
15:03now.
15:05A minute and a half
15:06of stoppage time.
15:09McCall
15:09were hard
15:13and under pressure
15:13from Jury
15:14and it came off
15:15the Dutch player.
15:16Scotland's throw.
15:16I don't think
15:17they'll be in a hurry
15:17to take this.
15:24and Jury
15:29will work it
15:29into that corner
15:30again
15:30and gets
15:33another corner.
15:34The old
15:34pro
15:35using his head
15:36and it's the noise
15:42of the Scottish fans
15:43you can hear
15:43around Villa Park
15:44now
15:44and the Dutch
15:46supporters seem
15:47to have accepted
15:47their fate.
15:48McKinley
15:52almost gifted
15:53one of them
15:54a large football
15:55smack in the mouth
15:57as he hammered
15:58that one behind
15:58the goal
15:59just to kill
15:59a bit more time.
16:02All eyes
16:03on the referee
16:03only he knows
16:05how long
16:06there is to go
16:06now.
16:07There is no
16:08more time
16:09to go
16:10there's the
16:10final whistle
16:11and Scotland
16:12have opened
16:13their European
16:15campaign
16:15with a very
16:16very
16:17creditable
16:18draw here
16:18against Holland
16:20the champions
16:21of Europe
16:21from 1988
16:23and the team
16:24fancied by many
16:25to win the title
16:26again
16:27this year.
16:29Scotland
16:30showed
16:31true
16:31brave heart
16:32spirit today
16:33they got bodies
16:34in the way
16:35when danger threatened
16:36they had that
16:37brilliant early
16:37save by Gorham
16:38they had a little
16:39bit of luck
16:40it has to be confessed
16:41particularly
16:42when Holland
16:43surely should have
16:44had a penalty
16:44when Collins
16:45handled the
16:46goal bound
16:46shot on the
16:47line
16:47but I think
16:48Scotland
16:48deserved
16:49to go away
16:51from Villa
16:51Park
16:51with something
16:52and that's
16:53exactly what
16:53they've got
16:54one very
16:55very precious
