For a trailer so brief and so purposefully vague, there's a lot to unpack in the first glimpse of Rian Johnson's 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi.' Here are some highlights from the new trailer, and the questions they raise for the future of 'Star Wars.'
Transcript
00:00All right, the teaser trailer for Star Wars The Last Jedi is finally here.
00:07And you know what that means? Trailer breakdown.
00:10The Hollywood Reporter's Graham McMillan has done the heavy lifting for us, so let's get into it.
00:15Here are four burning questions raised by The Last Jedi trailer.
00:18First, let's talk about this crushed object surrounded by glass.
00:21It kind of reminds us of the Darth Vader helmet shot in The Force Awakens trailer.
00:24We can hear the sound of Vader's breathing in the back of the shot.
00:27Suggesting a connection again, but this time, says McMillan, it almost looks like Kylo Ren's faceplate.
00:35But why would that be crushed and smoking?
00:37The balance.
00:38Next up, could we have a force balancing motif that harkens back to the just revealed poster?
00:44Here we see someone, maybe Rey, touching what could be a star chart and a modified version of the Jedi Order's logo.
00:51Says McMillan, could this image give us a clue about what has changed Luke's feelings toward the Jedi Order?
00:57Speaking of which, it seems like we could get to see more from a backstory scene only teased in the last movie.
01:03The destruction of Luke's Jedi Academy.
01:05A cloaked figure standing by R2-D2 in front of a burning building.
01:09More force backs, anyone?
01:10And finally, we have Luke's final words.
01:13It's time for the Jedi to end.
01:17But why do they have to end Luke?
01:19Why?
01:20Is it because the Academy was destroyed?
01:22Is Luke the bad guy now?
01:23Has he renounced the Jedi Order himself?
01:26Is Rey the last Jedi?
01:28Can I stop asking questions now?
01:29No.
01:30Check out Graham McMillan's story at THR.com now for even more mysteries raised by the first trailer from The Last Jedi.
01:36Mostly, I just want to know when we'll get the second one.
01:39I'm waiting, Lucasfilm.
