00:05It's a privilege to be here with you this morning and to be accepting this award named after one of the industry's greatest leaders and mentors.
00:14Sherry, your legacy extends well beyond a body of work that includes some of the most iconic motion pictures ever made.
00:20You're there. Okay.
00:20We all so greatly admire and respect your tireless and important contributions as a philanthropist and a humanitarian.
00:31When I first heard that the Hollywood Reporter wanted to honor me, I thought of all of the women who received this award before me.
00:37I don't know if I'm holding it correctly. I'm holding it like up here.
00:42Women who are pioneers and philanthropic leaders in their industry.
00:46Women who recognize the robust responsibility of being a global citizen.
00:52This last year has been a trying and challenging time in our world and our industry specifically.
00:59Every day we wake up to a myriad of headlines that deeply impact us from around the globe.
01:05We hear about the statistics that women work as much, if not more, than men.
01:10We hear about the wage gap, which globally still remains at women making 77% of what men make.
01:18We hear about our representation among corporate managers, legislators, and senior officials being low,
01:25with only about half of countries having women in managerial positions.
01:29We hear about the staggering reality that around one-third of women worldwide have experienced physical and or sexual violence at some point in their lives.
01:38We must align with the plight of the diverse communities marginalized by the status quo to create a more just world.
01:47The LGBTQ community, people of color, indigenous people, low-income individuals and families, and victims of violence and oppression worldwide.
01:56I want to walk in the shoes of the women who were honored before me today.
02:01Angelina, whose incredible work with refugees has changed lives.
02:06Meryl, who has spent her life's work championing women of the world.
02:21Shonda, the restraining order is lifted.
02:28Amy, who is committed to helping talented women find work behind the camera and in front of it.
02:34Gal, who truly is Wonder Woman.
02:36She came up to me at an award show, and I just went.
02:40She was so gorgeous.
02:41I didn't, like, recognize her.
02:42I was just like, who is, what is that?
02:44I want to thank Oprah, who wrote the cover story for this issue and gave me life-changing advice.
02:58I want to recognize all of the women who have stood up for adversity, to adversity, not for it,
03:03to adversity for themselves and for the good of others with profound dignity, perseverance, and strength.
03:11These women have shown what's possible when we embrace our platforms and use our voices to inspire and ignite the hearts of humanity.
03:20Their stories are powerful, pivotal, and echo far beyond the retweets or headlines we wake up to.
03:27It's not easy to speak out.
03:30It's not easy to face criticism on a global scale.
03:34But the fact is, I've been given a platform, and I feel if I don't use it, then I don't deserve it.
03:40The women who have inspired me and helped me change the world like the women whom I just named
03:45remind me of an Elie Wiesel quote that I'd like to share.
03:53I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation.
04:00We must always take sides.
04:02Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
04:06Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.
04:10Sometimes we must interfere.
04:12When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant.
04:21Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views,
04:27that place must, at that moment, become the center of the universe.
04:32As I look out here, I don't know what to do when you do that.
04:41I don't know if I should clap too.
04:43As I look out at everyone here today, and Justin Timberlake, I'm reminded of the courageous beauty of all of us that we share.
04:55Let's be outspoken.
04:56Let's be resilient.
04:58Let's all be silence breakers.
05:00Let's make sure the young women who are receiving $1 million in scholarships through their remarkable women in entertainment mentorship grow in an industry where outspoken women matter,
05:11where outspoken women lead, where all of our voices, ideas, and strength of our artistic community creates change in and out of the cinema.
05:21By doing so, we give back and give forward in the ways that matter most.
