Inside the streamer's decision to salvage the surprise summer sensation — and how the move from NBC to Netflix will change season four.
Transcript
00:00The truth we're all after may well hover above the edge of traditional science.
00:08We have the inside details on why Netflix decided to save Manifest, and it wasn't the fan tweets.
00:13After the mystery series was axed at NBC over the summer, fans flooded social media with their support.
00:19Creator Jeff Rake tells The Hollywood Reporter,
00:21I've had shows canceled before, and this is the first time that I experienced such a wave of support among the fandom.
00:27He's out.
00:28Shallow breath. He's alive. Come on, we've got to move him before the room claps.
00:33Leave me alone.
00:34All right.
00:35My name's Ben. What's yours?
00:36Meanwhile, the first two seasons of Manifest had recently debuted on Netflix.
00:40The series kept gaining traction on the streaming platform, even hitting number one on the top ten.
00:45Plus, fans on social media also didn't give up.
00:48But it wasn't the Save Manifest hashtag or the fan letters that saved the show.
00:52What scored Manifest a critical fourth and final season were those top-secret numbers created by viewers
00:58binging the show's first two seasons.
01:00Netflix head of Global TV, Bella Begeria, said,
01:02Fan enthusiasm is always great to see, but it really isn't the emails or tweets.
01:07To save a show in this way, it has to have that fan viewing.
01:10I appreciate their passion and being connected to the characters, but the viewing is the thing that saved the show.
01:15Today is November 4th, 2018.
01:22We've all been missing, presumed dead, for five and a half years.
01:26Netflix reveals to The Hollywood Reporter that 25 million accounts in the U.S. and Canada
01:31watched the show within its first 28 days of streaming.
01:34Moreover, Manifest relentlessly stuck around in the service's top ten for 71 days since its debut
01:40and was number one in the U.S. for 19 days.
01:43So, a deal for a 20-episode final season at Netflix was struck.
01:47The season will likely be split into two parts, with the first probably airing in late 2022.
01:52Rakes said,
01:52We established early on there is a death date in our mythology of June 2nd, 2024,
01:58when the story has a happy or a sad or a mixed ending.
02:01Fundamentally, I'm going to be able to continue telling the story that I was always going to tell.
