00:00One afternoon, a man named Rainer Wenger, a political science teacher at a German high school,
00:05was forced by the principal of the school to teach a project on autocracy to his class for one week.
00:11Autocracy itself is essentially a system where absolute power is held by a single person or group with no bounds,
00:18even by the law, or for instance, a dictatorship.
00:21Upon hearing the task, Rainer seemed reluctant, as he was much more interested in teaching anarchy,
00:26an ideology against all forms of government oppression.
00:29However, because the principal could not find a replacement teacher, he had no choice but to accept the assignment.
00:35While he taught political science, it turned out that Rainer also coached the school water polo team,
00:40and three of his students in the autocracy class were on the team, namely Marco and his friends Sinan and Bomber.
00:46The next Monday morning, Rainer began teaching the autocracy class.
00:49Among the students were Lisa, Mona, Tim, who was secretly a drug dealer at school,
00:54Kevin, and Caro, who was Marco's girlfriend, known for her critical thinking.
00:59As expected, most of the students were not fond of the topic of autocracy.
01:03This was clearly because of the country's background with the Nazi.
01:06They felt they already understood the subject perfectly well and knew how evil it was.
01:10To make the assignment more practical, Rainer decided to make a simulation of an autocracy,
01:16and he would act as the dictator.
01:18He immediately established the first rules that the students had to call him
01:21Herr Wenger or Mr. Wenger in English, and every student had to stand up when speaking.
01:27However, Kevin felt uncomfortable with the subject and walked out of the class with his friends,
01:32Sinan and Bomber.
01:33Unfortunately, the two were afraid that their act would mess up their grades,
01:37so they reluctantly returned.
01:38After that, Rainer explained that the rule requiring students to stand when speaking
01:42was not without reason, as standing increased blood circulation and could improve concentration.
01:48Next, he asked the class about autocracy and what conditions supported the rise of a dictatorship.
01:53The students gave various answers.
01:55Lisa argued that high unemployment and social inequality could support the rise of a dictator.
02:00Meanwhile, according to Tim, high inflation could also be a trigger for autocracy.
02:05On the other hand, Caro suggested that public disappointment with the government
02:08could lead to an autocratic ideology.
02:11Then Mona added her thought that excessive love for the country
02:14could also support the rise of autocracy.
02:16The discussion continued until the class ended.
02:19Each student had a different opinion, and most of them somehow enjoyed the topic,
02:23despite their reluctance before they started.
02:26Later that day after school, Tim went home and shared his experience from Rainer's class
02:30with his parents.
02:31Unfortunately, his father just fully ignored his story, while his mother just stayed silent.
02:36On the other hand, after finding out about Rainer's class,
02:39Caro's mother was quite skeptical about the topic.
02:42Meanwhile, Rainer talked to his wife, Anka, who was also a teacher at the school,
02:46about his class that day, and mentioned Kevin's decision to walk out of the class.
02:50The next day, when Rainer arrived in his classroom,
02:53he was surprised that the students were still formally calling him Herr Wenger.
02:56He then instructed the students to march in place
02:59and synchronize their footsteps to create a loud sound.
03:02He reasoned that this was intended to ignite their spirit and to annoy the class below them,
03:07which was the boring anarchy class taught by another teacher.
03:10After that, Rainer rearranged the students' seating
03:12and paired the intelligent students with those who were struggling with class.
03:16He even allowed them to copy each other's work,
03:19saying that this method would raise the class's average grade
03:21and help them surpass the anarchy class.
03:24Furthermore, he also claimed this cooperation would unite them.
03:28Mona, however, clearly disagreed with his method,
03:30saying that his way would only embarrass some of the students.
03:33Unfortunately, Rainer was adamant about implementing autocracy in his class,
03:37with him as the sole leading figure.
03:39Despite his odd teaching style, the students were interested in his topic.
03:43This was proven when some students from the anarchy class
03:46forced their way to join Rainer's class.
03:48During class after recess, Rainer asked the class what characterized group unity.
03:52Lisa pointed out that having the same clothing
03:54would eliminate differences and make everyone equal.
03:57However, Mona was against the idea.
03:59She feared that everyone would look the same and lose their individuality.
04:03Despite the argument from Mona, Sinan was engaged by the idea.
04:07He even proposed that the uniform they chose should be cheap so everyone could afford it.
04:11Rainer agreed and asked the students to wear the same white shirt and jeans.
04:14He even encouraged them to borrow clothes if they didn't own or couldn't afford a new one,
04:19all in the spirit of creating a helping and cooperative team.
04:22He did all these to make sure his class fully understood the concept of autocracy.
04:26After school, driven by his enthusiasm for Rainer's class,
04:30Tim went home and suddenly burned all his branded clothing,
04:33believing that those famous brands lacked empathy for children from less privileged families.
04:38The next day, Caro became the only student who did not wear the uniform
04:42because she felt that the white shirt did not suit her.
04:45Several students who had transferred from the anarchy class
04:47were also there without the white shirt.
04:50On the other hand, Mona finally decided to leave the class
04:52because she couldn't accept Rainer's teaching methods.
04:55After that, during class, Rainer asked the students to vote on a name for their group.
04:59And after an enthusiastic discussion,
05:01they eventually picked the name Die Well, or The Wave,
05:04a name suggested by Marco.
05:06Then Rainer spotted a graffiti sketch in Sinan's notebook.
05:09He was amazed and then instructed him to design a logo for The Wave.
05:13He also tasked the students with making The Wave more recognized outside,
05:17and they quickly took the initiative to contribute.
05:20Some created social media accounts, a website,
05:23and even merchandise like pins and stickers.
05:25The students were also becoming noticeably more loyal to one another,
05:29and it was proven when Bomber and Sinan stood up for Tim
05:31when he was being harassed by another student.
05:33Unfortunately, problems started showing up among the students.
05:43Because of their different opinions about the class,
05:45Marco and Caro had a big argument.
05:47Marco was too upset that he skipped his drama rehearsal,
05:50leading to his role being filled by another student.
05:53Meanwhile, The Wave's social media and website were finished.
05:57However, Tim secretly included a picture of a gun in the group's logo.
06:00Stickers and logos for The Wave began showing up everywhere,
06:04and things turned bad when the students' movement turned into a vandalism movement,
06:08while Rainer was completely unaware that his school project
06:11had become a bad influence on the students.
06:13Following this, Kevin eventually rejoined The Wave.
06:16On the other hand, Rainer's wife Anke started to feel uneasy about her husband,
06:20especially after seeing him and his students wearing the same uniform.
06:24At the same time, the other teachers at the school
06:26were also beginning to feel strange about him.
06:28Later that day, while the other male students were doing graffiti,
06:31Marco excused himself because Caro called him to meet her at her house.
06:35On the other hand, Tim bravely climbed a large building under construction
06:38to paint a giant Wave logo on it, while Kevin and his friends filmed it.
06:42However, the police soon arrived, forcing Kevin and his group to flee,
06:46while Tim managed to hide inside the building.
06:48The next day, Rainer's project had reached its fourth day,
06:59meaning that there was one day remaining.
07:01During the project, the student had made their own handshake or salute for The Wave
07:05by mimicking the shape of a wave.
07:07That day after class, Caro confronted Rainer,
07:10telling him that The Wave was completely out of control.
07:12However, Rainer dismissed her concerns and instead told her
07:16to simply switch classes if she didn't like the project.
07:19Meanwhile, the principal told Rainer that she actually supported the project,
07:23as some parents had reported that their children had become more disciplined.
07:27However, she also confessed that she couldn't openly show her support
07:30because many teachers were gossiping
07:32and openly disagreed with Rainer's teaching style.
07:34Later that evening, after school,
07:37members of The Wave were confronted by the students from the anarchy class,
07:40and some thugs who had previously tried to bully Tim.
07:43The anarchists were also angry because The Wave had painted over their graffiti.
07:47In that tense moment, Tim suddenly pulled out an empty gun,
07:50which he had purchased online to scare the thugs.
07:53Believing the gun was loaded,
07:54the rival group immediately ran away in terror.
07:57Meanwhile, Marco tried to persuade Caro to attend a party
08:00hosted by The Wave members near the lake.
08:02Caro, however, refused,
08:04explaining that she felt The Wave had gone too far.
08:06The presence of a gun on the website
08:08and an anonymous post there from someone claiming
08:11they were being forced to join the white shirt community or The Wave
08:14had gone beyond just a school project.
08:17On the other hand, feeling neglected by his parents,
08:20Tim showed up at Rainer's house and offered to be his bodyguard.
08:23To calm him down,
08:24Rainer decided to invite him to cook and stay for dinner that evening.
08:27However, when Anka arrived home soon after and saw that Tim was there,
08:31she became mad at Rainer.
08:32She felt that The Wave project had become freakish,
08:36especially after a student began showing up out of the blue at their home.
08:39To calm his wife after dinner, Rainer asked Tim to leave.
08:42Unfortunately, Tim refused, so he was forced to kick him out.
08:46Meanwhile, students from The Wave partied that night by the lake.
08:49At that moment, after Caro refused to chow up at the party,
08:52Marco cheated on her with Lisa.
08:54After that, he asked all members of The Wave to attend his water polo match
08:57against another school the next day.
08:59He insisted that all supporters should wear their white shirts to promote The Wave.
09:03Elsewhere, unbeknownst to Marco,
09:05Caro was busy printing flyers to protest and stop The Wave
09:08because she believed that the movement had gone into total chaos.
09:18The next morning on the final day of The Wave project,
09:21Rainer was shocked to see an article in the newspaper
09:23about The Wave's logo being painted on the construction site.
09:26After that, he also discovered that Tim had slept that night in his yard.
09:31He decided to drive Tim home, but on their way to Tim's house,
09:35his car was suddenly splattered with red paint by students from the anarchy class
09:39who sought vengeance after what Tim and his friends had done to them.
09:42Back at school, The Wave students had gathered all the protest flyers and planned to burn them.
09:47They immediately suspected that Caro was the one behind all these,
09:50and Marco decided he would confront her after the water polo match.
09:53Shortly after, when class finally began, Rainer was clearly mad.
09:58He demanded to know which student had dared to paint The Wave logo on the building.
10:01He kept calling the act dangerous and totally over the line.
10:05Then, as the project was supposed to end that day,
10:07Rainer instructed the students to write an essay about their experience,
10:11learning about autocracy throughout the week.
10:13Long story short, the class was finally over that day.
10:16At that moment, Tim approached Rainer,
10:18intending to confess that he was the one who painted the graffiti.
10:21However, before he could say anything, Rainer refused to hear it
10:25while saying that he would be reporting the matter to both the principal and the police.
10:29He made it clear that the behavior was vandalism that damaged public property.
10:33He also added that the students were supposed to be learning about unity from his class,
10:37not causing chaos.
10:39Later, when the water polo tournament began,
10:41the bus carrying The Wave supporters had the group's logo spray-painted on it.
10:45On the other hand,
10:46Bomber was seen stopping anyone without a white shirt from entering The Wave supporters area.
10:51After being rejected for their seat,
10:53Caro and Mona snuck in through a back entrance
10:55and began throwing their protest flyers directly at members of The Wave and other spectators.
11:00Shortly after, the match started.
11:01During the match,
11:02Sinan got into a fight with an opposing team member and both nearly drowned.
11:06Thankfully, Rainer quickly intervened and separated them.
11:09On the other hand, things were no different in the crowd.
11:12Kevin caused a commotion by kicking a person who was blocking his view.
11:15This series of problems caused Marco's team to be disqualified from the tournament.
11:19Later that day, Anki was completely fed up with her husband.
11:23She argued that his project had turned the students into rebels who blindly followed his every command.
11:28Upon hearing this, Rainer became emotional.
11:31He confessed that he hadn't realized how far things had gone.
11:34To make matters worse,
11:35he accidentally brought up his wife's habit of taking sedatives every Monday before school.
11:39That clearly hurt her feelings and she decided to leave the house,
11:43ignoring Rainer's attempts to apologize.
11:44Meanwhile, Marco and Caro were having an argument over her flyers that she had distributed during the game,
11:50which had led to his team being disqualified.
11:52Their argument became heated and Marco became so emotional that he slapped Caro until blood came out of her lip.
11:58After the fight, Marco went straight to Rainer's house and confessed that he had hit Caro out of anger.
12:04He admitted that he still loved her and he never wanted to hurt her,
12:07yet something inside him had changed and he somehow did the one thing he didn't want to do.
12:12He then begged Rainer to immediately stop the WAVE project while explaining that it had accidentally made the students selfish,
12:19temperamental, and care about no one but their own group.
12:22Rainer, who was still troubled by his problem with Ankim, eventually sent Marco away.
12:26He then informed the principal that he would take care of the WAVE problem the very next day
12:30because he felt it was all his responsibility.
12:34Meanwhile, after the incident at the water polo match,
12:36all the teachers, including the principal, were finally aware of what was happening.
12:40The WAVE members were acting like thugs outside the school and they committed vandalism by doing graffiti on buildings.
12:46So to fix everything that very night, Rainer texted all his students and told them to meet him the next day at noon in the school auditorium.
12:54The next day, the WAVE students gathered in the auditorium.
12:57After everyone was present, Rainer ordered Tim to lock the doors to prevent anyone else from entering.
13:02After that, he began reading several of the students' essays.
13:05Most of them said that they felt like a family and had a sense of unity among them,
13:09thanks to Rainer's teaching method that eliminated social divisions,
13:13making everyone feel equal regardless of their status, race, or religion.
13:18Rainer then began to ignite the spirits of his students.
13:21He stated that the country was deteriorating due to globalization
13:24and claimed that the government was forcing its people into labor just to survive.
13:29He then said that the government was nothing more than a puppet acting in the interests of big business.
13:33Therefore, the WAVE had to fight this injustice to make the country a better nation.
13:38Everyone was completely fascinated by the speech, except for Marco, who finally stood up to challenge Rainer.
13:44He accused Rainer of manipulating their minds.
13:46In a shocking move, Rainer instead ordered the students to drag Marco onto the stage
13:51and even incited them to harm their friends.
13:53It was then that everything became clear.
13:56It turned out that Rainer was only testing the students.
13:58He realized that they had blindly followed his every word,
14:01treating him as a dictator, just like Adolf Hitler in the past.
14:05All that had happened was a clear irony.
14:07On Monday, nearly every student was against the idea of autocracy
14:10and believed that a dictator should never again thrive in Germany.
14:14But just a week into the project, everyone became blindly following a leader,
14:18nodding along even if they were asked to do something morally wrong.
14:22Without realizing it, they had become an elitist group
14:24that was arrogant enough to exclude and persecute anyone outside them.
14:28After saying all that, Rainer apologized and stated that the WAVE had to be disbanded
14:32for the good of everyone.
14:34He explained that the students were only supposed to be learning about autocracy for a school project,
14:38yet they had gone too far, even creating a fascist movement that dangerously mirrored neo-Nazism.
14:44However, many students refused to accept the disbanding,
14:47especially Tim, who was deeply obsessed with the group.
14:50When Rainer declared that it was all over,
14:52Tim suddenly screamed in denial with a gun in his hands.
14:55This time, that gun was loaded,
14:57and in a terrifying moment, he shot Bomber, who tried to calm him down.
15:05Upon seeing the horror in front of them, the students fell silent.
15:09Tim then pointed the gun at Rainer and expressed his disappointment
15:12while revealing how much the WAVE had meant to him.
15:15He felt abandoned by his parents,
15:17but the WAVE had treated him like a family.
15:19He felt accepted when he was trusted to build the website
15:22and felt defended by his friends when the bullies tried to bother him.
15:26In a final and horrifying scene,
15:28overwhelmed by disappointment in Rainer
15:30and the realization that the police would surely arrest him
15:33after everything he had done,
15:35Tim suddenly turned the gun on himself
15:37and committed suicide in front of everyone.
15:39Long story short, Rainer was arrested by the police.
15:42He was charged with spreading fascist ideology to his students,
15:45which had led to the students' acts of vandalism.
15:48He also had to face responsibility for the severe injury that Bomber suffered
15:52and the tragic death of Tim.
