01:33El jugador
01:34i can still picture him on that tv scoring the goals going for the high ball i can still see him
01:46you know and he was he was he was god dj is god in god we trust in dj we believe
01:53he was a professional today he'd be worth 50 million right team would be worth nothing
02:01he seemed to handle that stardom very well on the field stars who give us highs in life
02:09every county has their own in any of their counties those people could shoot somebody
02:14in their county and it wouldn't come up on their cv judge martin nolan sentenced him to a total of
02:21five and a half years in jail saying he couldn't imagine a more reprehensible type of fraud
02:26you really have to do fairly serious mental acrobatics to get your head around it at all
02:34i wonder how unhappy a man would have to be to be hiding all that behind such a persona
02:43which was so pure and wholesome dj carey is accused of inducing 23 people to pay him money
02:52after he had fraudulently claimed to have cancer there are very good people in kilkenny they'll
02:58have tears in their eyes as they talk about his hurling and what has happened and they cannot
03:03believe it there are others that are absolutely torn by this they don't want to talk about the fraud
03:09part of this story he is the ultimate hitman and we mean that in the nicest possible way dj carey
03:16kilkenny loved dj why would they not we're all responsible for the consequences of our actions
03:23he was absolutely a master connor tears but to this day if i met him out in the street if he
03:31wanted to talk to me i would sit down and have a coffee with him
03:33it's the most extraordinary story
04:02and while for a long time i didn't allow myself to have an opinion on it i just tried to look at
04:08the evidence in front of me read the text messages talk to people
04:13try and figure out what was going on but now that i have come to the end of the road in terms of
04:22the investigation or exhausting a lot of avenues i would say it looks like it's textbook criminality
04:32it looks like it's a story of betrayal
04:36it's the story of a man who was loved by so many people and ultimately he betrayed their love and
04:45their trust in him because he went back to those very same people and he took money from them
04:50and the thing is i think a lot of them would have given him the money
04:54but he took it on the basis that he had cancer
04:58hi there it's seymour nevrain on here i'm just checking in i'm just wondering if you had a chance
05:10to think about our last conversation obviously i'm traipsing around the country trying to get
05:14people to talk to me about what is going on at the moment there were times when dj got into some
05:20details about his personal life so he addressed this issue or the rumor about cancer with journalists
05:27and dennis walsh reports that these whispers were persecuting carrie and that there was an epidemic of
05:34rumors so many so sinister so false a couple of years ago he reports a story swept the southern half of
05:42the country that he was dying of cancer he knows how it started suffering from stomach pains he was sent
05:49a hospital in waterford for tests the test took place in the same area of the hospital that housed
05:54the oncology facilities sitting there he was seen and from such a sighting his cancer was born
06:01so clearly in the interview dj dismissed any suggestion that he was suffering from cancer
06:07but it begs the question is this where dj first got the idea about the cancer
06:15well bernie how are you how's going thanks a million you're very good to tell me about the um
06:26the celebrations that are coming up because i wondered about that because that 2000 team
06:31that was obviously a big year for dj he'd have to be invited to that celebration then on all ireland day
06:38will they name him out will he get a standing ovation yes you'll see what happens at halftime yeah
06:54we actually met a couple of people from his hometown in the last week i think my impression
07:17compared to a number of years ago where people were almost defending him and you know he was very
07:23revered and it was a completely different uh viewpoint at this time it's hard though as well
07:29ger i know like mag is saying about the feeling has changed which is interesting from some people
07:35in kilkenny because at the start there was a lot of disbelief but is it's you're in a different circle
07:40in a way to mag because you are very steeped in the ga is it a difficult position for you to be in
07:46it's easy to say oh i'm angry i'm you know i'm disappointed i'm but like it's it's a total you
07:54know it's a concoction of feelings really and i think you know the general public really are probably
08:00in a similar position you know look now sitting back i wasn't able to to see beyond my decency or our
08:09decency i mean he played on your vulnerability which you know is really it is unforgivable really
08:16i do know a person who rang me who talked about he had given some money to about i think about 5 000
08:22and he he said if his wife found out she would divorce him so he was busy doing all the hours god
08:28gave to try and replenish that fund because she she didn't know and she would never know and he would
08:33never talk about it and it was people like that that was probably the day i decided hang on here now
08:39i just need to talk about this
08:45how many people do you know personally give dj carry money
08:49i'd say about 10. about 10. for sure
09:00i regard myself as being a very lucky person in terms of everything despite having cancer when
09:13jared came home one day and said listen i got a phone call a very strange request from dj carry he's
09:17looking for 5 000 and he basically said he's got your cancer and i said you're joking me that's gas you
09:23know
09:26kenny hurling circles it's a small place and you know you're at matches you knew him you know maybe
09:32to say hello to maybe a few words but like it was it was there was nothing in passing he mentioned
09:37that a space had come available at short notice in this center where he gets his stem cells and
09:45he had a shortfall of monies and he needed he needed money to get there and get his treatment
09:51and that he would repay the money upon you know when his insurance kicked in
09:58jared just talked about that hospital in seattle when he was in america getting treatment blah blah
10:03blah and i remember kind of taking it in but not really i said if he needs the money that's that's
10:07fine i was a bit surprised i knew his business had been in difficulty he wasn't well so maybe he
10:13wasn't working you know i believed jared's story and i said i remember saying to jared we have to
10:18presume we're never going to get that money back and i said it doesn't matter it's 5 000
10:24and if he needs the money just give it to him that's it he's won in 2003 and kilkenny are champions
10:32you were very upset at the time that all the papers literally lit upon you at the time of your marriage
10:40breakup how difficult was that uh it it it was it was a marriage breakup uh it was it was difficult
10:49that's life unfortunately i'm a public figure who amateur are not i'm a public figure
10:54but it's the stuff when they make up a story to get a story
10:58i suppose it's what's most upsetting and i'm a big person i'm an adult if i do something
11:05i have to put my hand up and say yes i done that i knew what i was doing you know so uh and if that
11:12gets into the public arena i can't help that when dj carey himself addressed the rumors he was given
11:20more fuel all the time to the fire and there was more intrigue lo and behold few weeks later he's in
11:26the headlines again there was a front page story about how he had gone into the garage at crookstown
11:33in county kildare and he had stopped off he left the keys in the car and left thousands of euro in
11:41the boot and he came out and the car was on its way up the road so the headline that uh the examiner
11:49went with that was on that front page was speedy dj turns the tables on car thief that was the front
11:56page and how the country's leading ga star apparently proved to be just as worthy an opponent off the
12:02pitch as on so he jumped into an onlooker's car they reported he pursued the thief himself even
12:09though garthy were aware there was gar the cars there was a gar the helicopter and the journalist said
12:16that this story ended with carrie tracking down the thief pulling him out of the bmw however the
12:23culprit and eventually got away so and he managed to recover his car but it was reported that several
12:30phones as well as two and a half grand in cash were taken and the culprit was still on the run last night
12:36it just seems like mad stuff thinking back some of the detail of it was really extraordinary
12:42it's absolutely crazy when you think of how many thousand miles this man drove who would do it
12:54from michael in county carlo all the way up to arma to some ga hall this was on another level
13:02now usually hurlers could command a fee they could get some cash maybe five or six hundred pounds and an
13:09envelope to say thanks to them for doing a gig like that there were people i spoke to that said listen
13:15dj carey came here when we tried to pay him he'd wave the hand and say ah the cup of tea is grand
13:23i don't think dj carey was in it for the money i don't think dj carey was pocketing huge amounts of
13:29money from these public appearances
13:31he was very attention seeking behind it all he craved desperately craved people's approval
13:44so in terms of his public profile the perception of him he had an excellent reputation
13:53because there were times when he walked into a parish and he was like god
14:01i don't think we knew dj i don't think any of those people they knew
14:30they knew the persona
14:33the thing about dj is he was a very strange man there's an irish saying if you want to know me
14:40come live with me and i think the people that really know dj carey they spent a period of time
14:45actually living with them female relationships ex-girlfriends his former wife they are the people
14:53that will know what the real dj carey is like because it's very hard to keep a persona or a mask on 24 7.
15:03i don't know is anyone ever comfortable with the profile um it's it's there it's something you know
15:09i've i've played our national sport at the highest level been very lucky dj is spending more time
15:16all over the country there was a suggestion a dj was out maybe looking for somebody in terms of
15:23an agent of sorts and so it was reported in the media that barbara gallivin was dj carey's new agent
15:31but barbara had a good friend sarah newman the dragons all know what it takes to be successful in
15:37the fiercely competitive world of business essex girl sarah newman made her fortune by setting up and
15:43selling the needahotel.com website sarah had been hugely successful in business so she was known got
15:55the name as the dragon because she was on dragon's den and but certainly there was lots of extraordinary
16:01stories about her wealth at the time for example sarah newman went to mount juliet one day that she'd
16:08half a million and that she bought a home in mount juliet and it is that day that she met dj carey
16:15sarah was the one with the money dj was the one with the profile but as soon as he met sarah
16:22he stepped into a different world cheers
16:38the country's still digesting the news that dj's marriage is over five months later he's out with
16:45sarah newman huge flurry of media interest cheers dj didn't exactly keep his head down so you're fed
16:53up with the weather back home you want a bit of golf you want a bit of sun why not come to one of my
16:58favorite places in the world sun city he went off and filmed a program with rt no frontiers and that's
17:04how he announced his relationship to sarah to the wider world they went on a safari to south africa
17:10so for a fellow who was driven about privacy issues why would you go off and film a program with your
17:15new girlfriend number 14 down there is my boyfriend so that's why i'm interested
17:24kenny are producing players all the time while it's an end of an era for
17:28some players it's the start for for others dj was coming to the end of his career he was getting older
17:34as a hurler he had given a huge amount to kenny hurling end of an era dj carey has confirmed his
17:42inter-county career is over he didn't know the supporters anything but definitely his dedication
17:48would have been dwindling towards the end he seemed to be very interested in the golf now
17:54and in heading out to the k club and mount juliet to hit a few balls
18:00he says he had no interest in the the socialite scene but yet himself and sarah were pictured at many
18:07events like that there were so many articles about them their names were mentioned many times in
18:12social diaries in the irish independent and elsewhere and between them there were a real
18:19celtic tiger power couple i was a member of mount julies since it opened i would have often met dj up
18:32there played with him a couple of times up there um known pretty well to be honest with you
18:37his part that sarah i would have came across as well
18:47he came across as so honest and truthful an absolute gentleman that wouldn't know a lie if it bit him
18:56i would never question anything
19:05met him mount julies one day he was telling me he'd been for an operation over in the states
19:12and uh all i can tell you is it was stomach turning what he described what he went through
19:20uh over in the states and the operation he had on his stomach
19:32this is a jersey that's dj signed for me uh one of a number of items the autograph for me
19:42the hurl he needed at least one or two more treatments and he was financially in a bad situation i was
19:52probably at the time just lucky i had retired and i had a lump sum between
20:01finishing up mark and my pension so i did have money to spare
20:06this hurl was made by dj's brother he's personally signed it to myself i'll forever treasure this hurl
20:17for what it represents for the greatest hurler of all time i had seven or eight hundred on me the
20:24first day that i met him so i gave him that and told him look i'd see what i could do i didn't promise
20:29anything to him but and i think it was afterwards then i gave him the 10 and uh yeah and um i get
20:37him three i think after that and one thousand and uh one and a half thousand but 17 i think in total
20:45things were great when sarah was a multi-millionaire celtic tiger times plenty of wealth going
21:03around dj was certainly enjoying himself life was good in the k club but obviously no one came
21:09afterwards the the crash and the fact that the properties that they paid multi-million euro
21:15prices for like they weren't worth a fraction of it at the end once the banks wanted their money back
21:21and once things started to get very stressful for the pair of them the cracks started to appear
21:28dj's business was under pressure so while the business was small he had always managed to make
21:34a living out of it and to employ people from it but katrina obviously was really involved around this
21:40time um around 2009 she had to step away newman took over as director with dj at that stage
21:52and she called in the auditors because she wasn't happy with what she saw
21:59she also spoke to media about it so this caused a massive issue for dj and his
22:04family katrina was very unhappy with all of that
22:12she the media at her door in the period afterwards when all of this became public so it got really
22:19really dirty properties owned by him at golf resorts the k club in kildare and mount juliet in
22:25kilkenny that had been used as security for the debt other assets were sold too the banks then on
22:30their tails as a couple then 2011 you know they tried to save the relationship there was talk at one
22:38stage that they'd get married even for sarah she had actually planned the wedding and she had an
22:44exclusive interview on the 22nd of april 2012 when she said that the relationship with dj was over
22:51the dragon and dj were no more
23:00lo and behold within weeks djs back grabbing the headlines this time he was in kilkenny garda
23:06station apparently was filling out a form or something like that when he took some kind of a turn and he
23:13collapsed
23:17in 2012 you collapsed and your son mikey heard the cruelest rumor of them all which was what he was
23:26told by a young fellow in his class that came out on facebook that i had committed suicide you know so
23:31you can imagine how difficult that was and how difficult it was for him do you know what happened
23:36in terms of the cause of that collapse uh well the cause of it was i was carrying a virus in in around
23:44my heart wall which called pericarditis okay uh stress causes it uh whatever else and uh that brought
23:50it on so you know but thankfully i was in the right place at the right time did you did you ever sustain
23:55dj did a very uh high profile interview and he alludes to health in that interview but it's
24:01really confusing right well that that answers that question but the other thing didn't you have a
24:05brain scan in hospital i did yeah but the other thing i want to say sorry you know what what i
24:10found was there had even been rumors at that stage that there was something up with dj people were
24:16nearly afraid to say the word cancer but certainly dj left us with the impression that he had something
24:22serious wrong with him what did your the brain scan that you had well i had a double aneurysm
24:27and i had seven blood clots you tend to believe people when they say that something happened to
24:37them but when it's something medical it's extraordinary difficult because doctors can't
24:42verify a story for you about patients and if the horse's mouth is telling you well yeah i did go to
24:47america and i had clots on my brain maybe he did but like everything with dj there's question marks
24:58because we don't know what's true and what's false so he's a bit like the boy who cried wolf
25:03it's very hard to know where the truth lies
25:16when i heard about the cancer i would say i probably neither believed it nor disbelieved it
25:22it was just another story about dj and look if you told me that dj was going to the moon
25:31i would have said yeah whatever it might be true probably wasn't true you never know
25:38he came in occasionally as a customer you'd see him now over the years over the years yeah he always
25:49sat at those two tables with his back to the wall where the sign 17 is there or the other one over
25:55there he he always sat there um looking down this way um do you think he was targeting people
26:02now with hindsight you're thinking yeah he was seeing who his next mark was going to be almost
26:09you know there was one man coming in here and uh he was involved in the hurling community he was a
26:14he was a you know businessman and uh he he just told me that he kept dj money and i can still remember
26:22seeing him standing up there talking with dj you know so the money is part of it but i think um the real
26:30lack of confidence and respect and that that you lose when someone you hold in high regard
26:36um just lets you down a bit i suppose
26:39a friend of mine down in kilkenny was walking through the lobby in the hotel and there was
26:50dj sitting there and he asked my friend for my phone number
26:57i'd heard that he wasn't well they had a very very serious condition
27:01there was a killer disease but the treatment that he was getting in seattle was working
27:12he phoned me he needed funds my first reaction of course whatever we can do we'll do it
27:23i had a pub that i found it in spain paddy's pint we were making lots of money in spain my son
27:29ian dj would have been his idol as well and i said i said to ian we have to do something
27:36we have to do something for dj and he agreed with that you know
27:45on the friday he rang me and he said that he was going to seattle on tuesday he says bernie
27:50you're immersed in the g there in westmeath and you know you know the people you know all the clubs
27:56could you get the clubs to raise some funds for this for me but i mean like a shot i said of course
28:01i will dj but it has to start in kilkenny and by this time i said surely there must even to tide you
28:08over there must be people down in kilkenny after you've done all you've done for kilkenny yeah he
28:13said i can't do anything down there i get nothing down there on account of the sister yeah
28:18he said the scandal with his sister had broken at that time and i can't set up anything in kilkenny
28:30the former ireland hockey international and camogie player faces three charges of money laundering
28:36between january of 2019 and december 2021 having falsely represented that cariesford asset estates
28:43was in a position to secure finance for distressed mortgage holders and that the deposit was refundable
28:54dj carey while what he was doing was completely separate to his sister
28:59they were on two different paths but all the time while the focus was on katrina
29:04people were wondering what if he's not credible what if he's been telling us lies
29:09people started to scrutinize things a little bit more carefully
29:16when katrina's story was exposed there was all of a sudden a lot of attention on the caries
29:22and that wouldn't have suited dj
29:24katrina carrie paul murphy here from rt investigates i'd like to ask you about your
29:27business and your business practices please we have a moment
29:31the news with his sister had broken at this stage so i was taken aback and then ian in spain
29:37he heard something as well we were going to give him five grand he said hold back on that he said
29:45there's something not right he said give him a thousand first and we'll see how it goes
29:52uh i rang uh dj
29:58to a silence i knew that he didn't consider that any good you know and i felt bad
30:05and i knew then as nice as djs uh i knew that it that he really was was not happy
30:13i had a quick conversation with my brother and i said to him do you know what's dj carey like and
30:22he just said to me stay away from him something not right there i said you know he's very sick
30:27not at all not want me to be careful stay away from him and then i decided
30:32right i think we might have a little bit of a problem here
30:35there came a point i think mag all of a sudden realized here maybe that was some level something
30:43deceitful about what was going on she found the strength and uh just sent me like being fiercely
30:52determined that this wasn't going to happen to another person she just said enough is enough
30:56that's it and the story this is not going to happen anyone else
31:10this is dj carey your dj tonight
31:15at the time it never even occurred to me that anybody could be so
31:18devious or manipulative to tell somebody they had a cancer
31:22especially and even worse to say to tell the husband of a recently diagnosed person that the
31:29same cancer i couldn't i didn't believe in that anyone in in could be that evil to do that so i
31:35absolutely never never occurred to me that he didn't have cancer never i still was very you know
31:42maybe i do want the money back now and if he's getting the insurance money so i sent a message to
31:48dj and again he come back oh yeah yeah i'll do it next week
31:52and that went down for a number of weeks then he'd go back and say well i have to transfer he started
31:57to to talk in riddles a bit and i began to i suppose realize over time that something wasn't quite
32:05right here okay so i got a call one day from very successful businessman and he said hi mac how are
32:16things and i said great how are you i won't mention his name and he said uh do you know dj carey
32:24and i said to him how much did you give him you big eejit
32:29and he said oh my god yeah i heard i got your name was mentioned
32:33and i discovered that this person had given well in excess of 100 000.
32:38if it works out brilliant and uh if it doesn't well you have to take the flack afterwards
32:51so tell us uh and did dj ask you for a loan oh dj oh sure don't it's the usual stuff those no it
33:03didn't make it didn't add up i met him another day and he says just after getting a full body
33:12blood transfusion the previous week and he was carrying a bag and i said jesus i says that's
33:17amazing i said you're i think you're some man for one man and uh but i thought myself you know this
33:23is doesn't doesn't sound right doesn't even even sound kosher even so i asked a friend of mine who's
33:30a doctor you see and i said listen i said somebody had a full body blood transfusion uh how long would
33:37it take to recover and he says jesus he says depends on the system and their body and what
33:42by the way and all the rest of it he says something three months plus so i said uh so he asked me
33:48afterwards do you think about it says no i did it but i says no i won't be doing anything for you
33:52there was a friend of mine then okay he came to me and he told me he gave him money
33:55and i says uh are you sure that was the right thing to do and he says well i felt it was right
34:02and do you know much again i'm not sure i'm not sure he didn't specify the amount but it was
34:07to to size well so this it was more than 15 000 a year
34:11he's a very capable man very eloquent you know very clever man he's not he's not stupid you know by
34:27any means i have nothing but fond memories of dj very grateful to him he has always been good and kind
34:35remembered me he invited us to his wedding and the launch of his um book the day in city west when
34:45the dvd was launched by the teacher at the time bertie iron
34:53some of the lads that heard with dj when the bad news broke they said they stuck by him because they
34:59said well he's messed up but we wouldn't have got where we are without him we own
35:06we owe him an awful lot
35:10i spoke to him once for a while on the phone there on the surface he was saying everything
35:16seemed to be going well like he was going to take this court case and take that the police had
35:21confiscated his phone and gone after people to try and get a case against him and um
35:29things were bad but she was he was he was he was optimistic you know you see when you look at it
35:38like he has to been running scared for the last 20 years he must have been or the last 10 years
35:43like when the news broke about his sister he knew that his finances are going to be looked at
35:48so he must have been like what sort of life had he
36:03there are some moments where you think like how could he have gotten to this point
36:08like this point of desperation
36:24i don't know the date that this photograph was taken originally but this photo emerged and it was on
36:31loads of different forums platforms social media twitter whatsapp every group in the country nearly
36:39was sharing this image of dj
36:44from what i can see it appears to be a photograph that dj took that he sent to somebody maybe somebody
36:50he was interacting with around treatment and looking for money or whatever looked like some kind
36:56of a charger iphone or otherwise stuck inside his nose a fairly lame attempt really to to show treatment
37:05for cancer
37:10and it's hard to think you know that anybody would believe that but then when you compare that to what
37:17some of the people who were really involved with dj they recognized things in the photograph that said to
37:24me and said to others said to their friends that would be dj all over that he was quite creative that he thought that he was smart
37:32like just all very very strange stuff
37:38i remember saying to someone what were people thinking giving him money
37:42and they said if you had a million euro and dj asked you for a hundred grand would you give it to him
37:48and i said yeah you know i would
37:51you would yeah i would have if he had asked me i would have given it to him now i would have had
37:55to i don't have a hundred grand to hand out but if i had if i was well off and he asked me i would
38:00have given it to him and i think that because because we loved him so much as a hurler
38:05that picture i suppose is extremely special um i got it after the 2003 all ireland dj was signing
38:22autographs as it usually does for everybody and my daughter bridgette was in the photo along with my
38:30niece jenny and to have a photograph like that for me and for them as well it's just a treasure
38:40uh to have that and after what's happened um i couldn't leave it in the hallway anymore
38:52so rather than throw it in the bin it's still history there so i it's just discreetly put aside
39:00in the front room now
39:12i remember thinking to myself it was the principal i'm going to get my money back
39:16how am i going to do it so i literally started to play his game
39:22i literally started to play the dj gary game
39:28that's how i got my money back
39:29me and you against the world dj everybody thinks you're a bad guy you're not a bad guy
39:34i know you're a good guy i know where you've come from you're a role model for my kids
39:38you know i'll work with you dj because i know you're going to give me the money back because you
39:45know if you don't you wouldn't have to see your name spread across the front of the irish times
39:51because everybody loves dj carey and that wouldn't be something you'd want because i know your
39:57reputation is so important to you dj it's more important than that five thousand
40:04time is moving on it's getting closer and closer for me to go into isolation
40:07pre-stem cell transplant and i rang him and said okay i need this money by
40:15monday would i come meet him i said no you come meet me in goatsbridge
40:19i wasn't going to be there he didn't know that and i rang jar was up in the factory and he came
40:24down from the factory to meet dj and i sent a text to dj around that stage and said by the way i'm
40:30really sorry dj i got stuck down in the hospital just getting bloods jerry meet you hope that's okay
40:34she said he'll have 5000 euro for you will you check it so he came in i counted the money um
40:46i think i said to him that was grand he didn't he didn't say hello he was embarrassed for sure i think
40:52he was embarrassed but you know maybe embarrassing but there was there was shame or some element of
41:00you know he realized here that he had fucked with the wrong person so jerry rang me
41:06what happened one they'd had the coffee the trash i got the money and i'm more laughing because i
41:12just said to myself poor fecker who did he get the five grand from
41:19i'm embarrassed by all this in lots of ways maggie said to me oh cop yourself on like kind of
41:26you know what are you embarrassed about this man was like unfortunately like you know a con man he
41:32was taking monies off lots of people and a few of these stories were kind of outlined and then
41:37i think you know there was there was a call then for a guard investigation
41:46so i got a phone call from a detective the reason that they had my name was because they had obviously
41:51his bank records and they asked me where they come and speak to him so i went down to waterford and
41:59i sat there and i told my story i felt it was important to stop him in his tracks i won't protect
42:08him but i will protect anybody who comes in contact with them from it happening to them absolutely
42:15the guards rang me one day and the first thing they said to me is so i believe uh you're a friend of
42:26dj carey's and uh i said yeah i am and then i said look before we go on can you categorically tell me
42:38that dj never had an operation for cancer in the states and they were able to tell me categorically
42:49he never had cancer he was never in the states
42:55i'd say i'd give him an oscar for the acting it was unreal
43:00the thing about is i never i didn't care whether i got the money back he would have got the money
43:07anyhow from me even if he wasn't sick that's what that's what an icon he was he didn't have to say
43:13he was sick even it's because he used the sickness that's brought the sour note to everybody's door
43:24the judge said most fraudsters seek to exploit people's greed but dj carey had exploited people's
43:30good nature he knew a lot of these people they knew him as a formidable sportsman and wanted to help
43:36him in his hour of need there's an old chinese proverb no man should be judged on his worst deed you
43:45know now the only thing that soured me i had a good friend that uh uh we buried early this year jano
43:54mahoney and jano uh was equally iconic in ga as dj and he was one of the loveliest guys you could meet
44:06jano had the disease the dj claimed he had and jano the dignity with which he fought it and carried
44:14himself that was the difference between two ga sporting icons i i resented very much then for the
44:21first and only time i resented what dj was doing you know on account of it
44:34i'm sure it would be a disappointing turn for the average supporter but it won't make any difference
44:46to me in how i look at the game of hurling
44:53i'll still see that ball hitting the cross baron crook park i'll still see the crowd getting up under
44:59seats highs in life and memorable moments there no prosecutor
45:08or no journalist give me that moment i won't get that spark that made my life a higher quality elsewhere
45:16yeah i i like i do remember the way he made me feel uh and uh i don't know i don't think it just uses
45:30bad behavior you know it doesn't i'm sorry uh we we look at it it's it's everywhere it's in arts it's in
45:38film what do we think of the woody allen masterpieces what do we think of caravaggio's what do we still
45:43listen to thriller you know like what do you do with that huge moral dilemma about the the sinner and
45:52the sin and and i think we loved the sinner but we can't condone the sin i'm disgusted your own wife died
46:09of cancer oh gosh yeah did dj know that oh sure that was like you can't can't live my life and live the
46:18life i've lived uh in front of people uh like when my wife died like i've seen what cancer does and i've
46:27seen the devastation that cancer can have and i've seen the devastation that cancer had in our house
46:32and the effort that it took to get to the stage we're at we were at we're at now but um as regards dj dj
46:41would have known like uh but for somebody for anybody to say that they suffer from cancer uh and
46:51it's not if it's not true that that's that's there's no comeback this you just could you can't
46:56be comfortable with that that to me is beyond it dj's been jailed now for five and a half years
47:07it's really hard to say exactly how much he took some sources are saying to me that two million
47:13wouldn't be wide off the mark businessman dennis o'brien alone gave dj over 125 000 euro and 13 000
47:23there's victims watching this and they've never come forward some men will be afraid to have told
47:28their wives but the question is how many of them are out there and how much was taken
47:38former kilkenny hurler dj carey has been jailed for five and a half years for defrauding people
47:44by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money for treatment kerry defrauded 22 people out of almost
47:52400 000 euro around 350 000 of which has never been repaid the judge said he couldn't imagine a more
48:01reprehensible form of fraud i was delighted when he pleaded guilty because um
48:11he's now facing up to the reality because he wasn't living in a real world up to now
48:19when you have an addiction problem and obviously dj has a type of addiction you have to face the truth
48:26yourself and hopefully he will
48:32and when he was a hurler he never failed to take responsibility standing up in croke park to take a
48:39penalty shot in an all-ireland final day that takes guts so that if he shows the same type of
48:46resilience and determination and guts he can get through this aside
48:56to me anyway it's um shakespearean tragedy a fatal flaw in the grand person
49:03but it's of his own making
