Drew Afualo spoke to THR at The New Fame Creator A-List event about what's on her social media feed, where she wants to go next in her career, how Hollywood is embracing content creators and who she'd want to play her in a movie about her life.
00:00So what's on your social feed right now? What kind of content are you consuming?
00:04Ooh, I mean, it depends. A lot of sillies, obviously. I honestly am on Farrier Talk. Are you on there?
00:10Horseshoe cleaning. Love it. Love it. Eating it up. I'll watch every horseshoe video there is.
00:17Amazing. And who's a creator whose content's really inspiring you right now?
00:20Mmm, really inspiring me. Probably my sister in Christ, Caleb Heron, obviously. Heron, Heron, whatever it is. Who knows? Just kidding.
00:31Obviously, Caleb. I would say Britney, too. They both inspire me a ton just to keep working hard, being funny, sharpen my saw, you know, all those things.
00:40So we're here at the Hollywood Reporter's new fame dinner. Do you feel like Hollywood's embracing creators in the digital space more now than they were maybe a couple years ago?
00:48Yeah, definitely. I would say the landscape has shifted drastically in the last few years, for sure.
00:55I would say a lot of us have just become so loud and so annoying. They have no choice but to include us. Period. Yeah, definitely.
01:04And what's your message to people in Hollywood who are still hesitant to embrace content creators? Like, why do you think they should?
01:12I would say, well, first of all, I find that ironic because the whole industry of Hollywood's built on the shoulders of nepotism.
01:18So I think it's funny to be like, well, you're not supposed to be here. Well, I didn't have a famous dad, so obviously I had to find my way there.
01:24I also think, too, to embrace it. It's the future, right? Some of us don't have connections or famous people.
01:31Sometimes the only way we get seen is we force people to look at us.
01:34And I think a lot of marginalized people especially would never have access to things like this if it weren't for social media, myself included.
01:41So I think it's a beautiful thing. Embrace it. Change is lovely. We love it.
01:47What are your long-term goals with your content? Do you want to move more into the traditional Hollywood space?
01:52Yeah, totally. To probably the chagrin of every typical Hollywood starlet that hates influencers.
01:57Yes, of course I want to come over there. I would love to move. I'm moving more into acting.
02:02That's like my next new big thing. Also writing more books, which is very exciting.
02:06Yeah, anywhere they'll have me. I am open and available and willing.
02:11Amazing. And if there was going to be a movie about your life, who's a celebrity that you'd want to play you?
02:17Oh my God, obviously The Rock. The Rock or Jason Momoa, whichever one's open and available.
02:22Or Sasha Colby. She would be wonderful as me. Me just thinking of all the PI people I can.
02:26Maybe not Ali because she can sing beautifully and I can't sing at all, so obviously.
02:30Yeah, I would say any of my PI brothers and sisters, but mostly The Rock. That'd be wonderful.
