Penny Marshall, who starred on the ABC ratings sensation 'Laverne & Shirley' before shattering records as a top-grossing female director in Hollywood, has died. She was 75.

00:08We salute Penny Marshall, who died Monday night at age 75 due to complications from diabetes.

00:53directing Tom Hanks in a star making Turning Big, making Marshall the first woman director to helm a film grossing more than $100 million at the box office.
01:02With the 1990 medical drama Awakenings, Marshall became the second woman ever to helm a Best Picture Oscar nominee.

01:18In 1992, Penny directed another box office blockbuster with A League of Their Own, a comedy about the All-American Girls Baseball League starring Gina Davis, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell.
01:29Rosie took to Twitter to mourn her good friend, posting their 1996 Kmart commercial and tweeting simply heartbroken, hashtag RIP Penny.
