00:00Harvesting at the right time can make the difference between flavorful produce
00:04and practically unpalatable. Hi, this is Amy from Gardening Know How,
00:09and I'm going to share a few handy garden harvest tips that will have you picking those
00:13vegetables at their peak. Timing for harvesting vegetables is primarily dictated by the length
00:19of time they have been growing. This information is found on seed packets and plant tags.
00:25Be sure to keep your tags and packets throughout the season for reference,
00:28even if they're empty, or jot down the recommended harvest date into a notepad.
00:33I like to add a reminder event into my phone's calendar so that I can set it and forget it.
00:39As far as the timing of the harvest, some veggies prefer to be picked early,
00:42while others need to wait on the vine. If you are looking for tender edible pea pods, pick early.
00:48When you see the pods swelling, pick one to see what's inside. If the peas are of desired size,
00:54start picking the others. If not, wait a bit longer to harvest, but check daily as they ripen quickly.
01:00After harvesting your peas, the spent foliage is a perfect addition to your compost bin,
01:05or turn it into your garden as the nitrogen-rich plant provides nutrients far superior to any
01:11chemical fertilizer in the soil. Well, now you have the know-how to properly harvest some of the most
01:17common vegetables. Until next time, happy gardening!
