Fat Mattress — Fat Mattress 1969 (UK, Psychedelic, Folk Rock)

The debut album by the band from Folkestone (Kent), formed in late 1968 by vocalist Neil Landon and guitarist/vocalist Noel Redding. The latter had been the bassist and backing vocalist for the renowned psychedelic rock band The Jimi Hendrix Experience since 1966, but by 1968 he was deeply dissatisfied with his position in Hendrix's band. Redding himself had considerable experience as a lead guitarist and was eager to get going, but who would allow him to play guitar and record his own music in the shadow of the greatest guitarist of all time? "Fat Mattress" opened up new opportunities for Redding to express himself. By then, Landon and Redding had written enough songs for Landon's long-delayed solo project and, having recruited bassist James Leverton and drummer Eric Dillon, began recording their debut album, "Fat Mattress." The album went unnoticed in the musicians' home country, but enjoyed minor success in the US, peaking at number 134 on the Billboard 200. The song "Magic Forest" unexpectedly became a major hit in Holland. Fat Matress planned a major American tour to support the album, but something didn't work out—they only played five of the 30 planned shows and returned to England. The album is a fascinating example of original British light psychedelia. "Fat Mattress" occupies a worthy place in the classic legacy of the legendary late 1960s era.
