Rhubarb's Revenge — Confessions Of A Big Lanky Dope 1973 (USA, Psychedelic Rock)
In the early 1970s, almost every evening, a group of friends calling themselves the RoadApples (Greg Shuss, Chris Breetveld, Rob Rothschild, Rich Larsen, Bill DiMartino) would gather after work at Pink Grass Studios (or, more commonly, Chris Breetveld's house) in Kendall Park, New Jersey. The young men drank beer and played something resembling music. All the while, they recorded their musical experiments on a Sony double-reel tape recorder. In early 1973, Chris's father announced that he and his family were leaving for India on a five-year assignment with UNICEF. Realizing that Breetveld would take his tape recorder with him and thus deprive other regulars of the recordings they had been working on for several years, the RoadApples decided to print a dozen copies of their work as souvenirs for each member. And that fall, a whopping 100 copies were privately pressed on vinyl under the title "Rhubarb's Revenge or Confessions of a Big Lanky Dope." Intending to test the commercial value of the band's musical delights, Breetveld took the LP on tour and, at his first stop on his way to India, showed it to a music publisher on Denmark Street in London. The publisher rejected it, as did all the subsequent ones Chris offered the record to before the family arrived in New Delhi. It wasn't until 1999 that the LP was reissued by Gear Fab with four bonus tracks, cut from the original due to length restrictions. Most of Side One consists of covers of songs by The Kinks, The Byrds, CSNY, and The Zombies. The originals are on Side Two.
