00:00The London clinic was the first independent hospital to bring robotic surgery to the UK.
00:11In 2005 we went to the United States to learn about this new technique called robotic prostatectomy
00:19and we were so amazed at this new technique whereby big incisions were no longer necessary,
00:27big blood loss was not expected, rapid recovery was the name of the game.
00:34So we were quite amazed and even before the return flight to London we decided never to do another open operation again.
00:44It was that dramatic.
00:46Suddenly we went from an open operation to six small holes, 3D HD vision, would you believe it, magnified at least 10 times,
00:55tiny little risks inside the patient, no tremor.
00:58Patients lose less blood, have less pain, they stay in hospital for a much shorter period.
01:05The chances of leaving cancer behind are much lesser and the functional outcomes are much better with robotic surgery.
01:13The centre brings together a multidisciplinary team not just of surgeons but anaesthetists, specialist nurses,
01:22surgical care practitioners and clinical nurse specialists who look after these patients on the wards.
01:29Careful preparation is vital but it's well worth it and the results are terrific.
01:36The patient needs to be prepared to go into a head down position which is the case for prostate surgery
01:44and also to have gas put into the abdomen so it's a whole different procedure.
01:50We are very fortunate at the London clinic to have four different robotic systems.
01:55The patient needs to have more than anything to do in such a Walking Operation area.
01:57We are very fortunate at the home and the patient
