00:00So my name is Adam Farkerson, I'm a consultant surgeon at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and this is the robotic theatre.
00:07This is where we do much of our robotic surgery and have been doing that now for over two years.
00:12How does it help patients?
00:14So robotic surgery has huge impacts for patients.
00:17Because it's a very precise way of doing the operation, it allows much quicker recovery after even very big operations
00:25so that their return to activity and discharge from the hospital is really soon in comparison to previous techniques.
00:31And you do all kinds of operations here, don't you?
00:34We do, so we offer robotic surgery for a variety of areas, mostly around pelvic cancer work.
00:41So that's things like hysterectomies for women's health, prostatectomies for men's health and bowel cancer for men and women.
00:49And we've been doing that for some time now, we've done over 500 cases in the NHS so far.
00:54And you can get patients in and out very quickly.
00:58So we've noticed that our length of stay after patients who've had this type of operation is hugely shorter than it used to be.
01:05For women who've had hysterectomies for example, they're often going home on the same day after their really big operation.
01:11And for patients who've had big operations for things like rectal cancer, which is a type of bowel cancer,
01:16the length of time that they're staying in the hospital is roughly half what it was before.
01:21Thank you Adam.
