05:07Don't try to walk around a boat in lumpy seas
05:10going to weather with no...
05:13You know, you need your hands.
05:20It gets all over my chart table and my paper charts.
05:23All right.
05:24Let's try to do this a little differently.
05:27Let's see here how I can do this.
05:33I'm going to break my neck trying to do this.
05:37Not good, the Bay of Biscay.
05:43I'm making poor decisions tactically.
05:47I went south towards the Spanish coast.
05:51I was fearing, if you look, check the weather and stuff about Danielle, the hurricane.
05:56And I didn't want to be in the middle of the bay with those seas.
05:59I wanted some protection.
06:01Unfortunately, the coast on Spain gave me very light winds.
06:06If that puts us in the back of the fleet, it puts me in the back of the fleet.
06:13I got to get around Cape Finistere and then I've got 700 miles where if these forecast winds come up,
06:21it'll be just like the tropical depression when I left Charleston and the boat will rock.
06:26I can grind the miles down.
06:28So we'll find out hopefully along the way with conversation with sailors about where I stand in the fleet and hopefully not too far behind.
06:41I'm calling Don from my first GGR weekly report.
06:47Hello guys, GGR.
06:54Hello, hello.
06:55Calling in from Spirit for my first weekly call in.
06:58How's it going back there?
07:00Yeah, good.
07:01You just gave Jane a heart attack because you called in on our emergency number.
07:05Oh!
07:06The stress phone number.
07:07I had that one down as the office number.
07:10Jane came running and said, yeah, he's gone.
07:13That's right.
07:16All righty.
07:17So you all okay there?
07:19Yeah, yeah.
07:20The first 36 hours, not really the first 36, but after the first night, which I did not sleep,
07:28because I didn't get much sleep the week before and everything, this old man ran out.
07:36I actually got seasick for only the fourth time in my life and I was throwing up and stuff.
07:42I actually called the doctor and he gave me some little help and advice and all I needed was sleep.
07:49So that Monday night, I didn't do much racing.
07:54I have no idea how I'm doing in the fleet, but I did survive and I've been catching up as much sleep as I can to put some fuel back into the tank.
08:04It wasn't how I wanted to start the Golden Globe race.
08:08Normally, I wanted to go really hard early.
08:11The conditions, I think, required it because they were so unstable most of the time.
08:16I mean, right now, I'm sitting in a washing machine of seas in about four knots of wind.
08:21So, what information can you share other than saying I'm with the group?
08:28Hello?
08:29Hello, Guy.
08:30You hung up on me when I asked you that question, didn't you?
08:44Yeah, I ran out of money in the machine, you know.
08:47So, no, we just lost the signal, eh?
08:50So, what information can you share about the fleet?
08:54I mean, who's doing well?
08:56No, we can't share anything.
08:58But, suffice to say, just to clarify, you shouldn't be worried about poor performance, okay?
09:05Okay.
09:06All right.
09:07Well, keep at it.
09:08You're doing a good job and we'll chat again next week.
09:11Yeah, I'm getting this off the weather facts.
09:16And so, it's a helpful tool, but not pinpointing something so specific.
09:22Like when Captain Coconut's saying he's in, you know, 10 knots of breeze and sunshine.
09:27And we're sitting here where Kirsten and I and Michael are.
09:31It's overcast and blowing about 14 knots.
09:34Over.
09:35Yeah, I'm wearing actually a far weather jacket and a wool net today because it's kind of cold-ish here.
09:42I'm, I am basically now a beam of Cape Finistere.
09:48And so, I'm out of the Bay of Biscay.
09:51I'm in the North Atlantic.
09:53And I've got about 700 nautical miles to go to sail to Lazerate.
09:59Uh, the most important thing is after seven days of sailing, I'm not, uh, not, not depressed or, or anything about not being in the position that I, I, I felt I, I wanted or felt I, I should be.
10:12I just have to work harder to get ahead.
10:19Each, each pound that I moved to the high side adds, uh, writing moments, instability, what we call stiffness.
10:39So I can carry more sail area, more power, by doing this.
10:46To do this religiously, takes a lot of effort.
10:52But let me tell you something.
10:55Moving a ton in one day, at my age.
11:00For one, it's going to make me a hell of a lot thinner.
11:04But I wish I was 34 years old like Damien.
11:11I'm having a blast everybody.
11:16I'm living the GGR life.
11:18Today, we're going to see about fishing.
11:33Sushi!
11:35Oh, it looks like I might have a fish.
11:38Maybe.
11:40Oh, I'm definitely trailing something.
11:43Let's see what I got.
11:46I think it fell off.
11:53Last night was an incredible night of flying the asymmetric spinnaker.
11:57Spirit was doing over nine knots.
11:59Uh, I cannot imagine anybody else would have, uh, been flying an asymmetric in those conditions at night.
12:06Um, and, um, so the boat was flying and I'm positive we, we just took off a lot of miles.
12:14What a mess!
12:26This is, uh, September 15th.
12:29It is almost, um, 1900 hours.
12:33You can see I'm enjoying my afternoon evening cigar and a cup of coffee.
12:39It's just been magnificent.
12:41The spinnaker, which you see up there, has been flying since 8 a.m. this morning.
12:46Unless something strange happens, I'm expecting to fly for a few more days all the way into La Zarate.
12:56And, of course, as I just said, these last 36 hours, the spirit has been flying.
13:02I mean flying.
13:04I'm here to race.
13:06So, that's the important thing is the miles.
13:16It's been an incredible 13 days.
13:20Really, really bad lows early.
13:22Uh, me almost hitting a fishing boat.
13:25Uh, getting out of the companionway.
13:28Uh, when that happened, a huge gash in my shin.
13:31Um, uh, tactical decisions, uh, always seem to make the wrong decision.
13:37Um, found myself, uh, pretty deep in the fleet.
13:41Um, not happy with that.
13:43Uh, had confidence as I always have in spirit.
13:47Once we got into the open ocean, um, I've been up for, um, 14 hours.
13:53And I'm gonna be up for probably another 12.
13:55Um, but that's what you gotta do at this stage in the race.
13:59Especially with the checkpoint.
14:01Bonserrate is sitting right here on the other side of the camera.
14:04I'm only a couple miles offshore.
14:06And, uh, we're gonna go there for another 30 miles.
14:10Around, uh, Point Punta Cera.
14:12And two miles after that, uh, uh, I'll be in the checkpoint.
14:16And then I'm free to go south, uh, all the way to the equator.
14:20To Trinidad and Cape Town.
14:22So I'm excited about the whole process.
14:24Um, very happy with the boat.
14:26Very happy with the team that came out to support.
14:29It's just been great.
14:30So, uh, uh, I've, uh, I hope, um, I hope, um, I hope everything goes well.
14:37Anyway, signing off for spirit for leg one.
14:40And, um, I can't wait for leg two.
14:45Uh, to get to, uh, Cape Verde Islands.
14:48The equator.
14:49Trinidad.
14:50And the, uh, and the trade winds.
14:52Uh, taking me down to the southern ocean in Cape Town.
14:55All right.
14:56Later.
14:57Signing off from spirit.
14:58Good night, guy.
14:59Hello.
15:00And, uh, he's probably only doing about, uh, three to four.
15:07And we've still gotten a mile or so to go to the, uh, to go to the void.
15:23So you're looking good.
15:25Done.
15:26No, it's been a great, uh, great trip at the beginning.
15:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:30Did you get much sleep?
15:32Um, well, you know, after the start, I basically collapsed.
15:39And, uh, because I didn't have any sleep for the week before.
15:44But we won't get into those details like that.
15:47And, um, you know, so I recovered from that.
15:51And, uh, three nights I flew a Sineker all night.
15:56And I did a lot of computer stuff, which is where I made up a lot of that time.
16:00Um, yeah.
16:01All right.
16:02Looks good.
16:03Since last day, uh, you know, it was stressful.
16:07I was like, yeah.
16:10All right.
16:11So you've got to stop it, Randy.
16:16You can do it.
16:18Uh, my phone got wrapped up and all.
16:22Okay.
16:23You know, okay?
16:24Yep, yep.
16:27So anyway, no major dramas to report.
16:31Well, I missed the fishing boat by 50 feet.
16:34Yeah, that was a good story.
16:36That was amazing.
16:37Well, except for my shin.
16:39Yeah.
16:40Is it all right now?
16:41Not really.
16:42Yep.
16:43No, I talked to the doctor this morning about it again.
16:45Yeah.
16:46You know, but, uh, it's, uh, it is what it is.
16:49Yeah.
16:50Okay.
16:51So everything's dry on board?
16:53Oh, the boats are phenomenal.
16:55Yeah.
16:56You know, all the systems are working.
16:58You've got a, you've got a position report in that, in that package as well.
17:01Yep.
17:02And, uh, so it's, uh, it's all good.
17:05It's all good.
17:06Yeah.
17:07Uh, Guy, you've got six minutes before you can put your headsail up.
17:11Okay?
17:12We're gonna go over to Kirsten now.
17:14We're right on top of it.
17:15All right?
17:16I see her.
17:17Okay.
17:18Yeah, so, uh, good sailing, eh?
17:19Yep.
17:20And, uh, have fun.
17:21Be all I am.
17:22Yeah.
17:23In Cape Town.
17:24Okay.
17:25Well done.
17:26See you in Cape Town.
17:27Take care, Guy.
17:28Bye-bye.
17:29Bye-bye.
17:30Bye-bye.
17:31Bye-bye.
17:32Bye-bye.
17:33Bye-bye.
17:34Bye-bye.
17:38200 degrees 44 minutes 364.
17:50Yeah, I'm on the rocks.
17:56I'm up to 45 degrees.
17:57The bone is getting pounded on itsuior
17:59can you see
18:00the shoreline
18:01ok
18:04try to stay with the boat as long as you can
18:07ok
18:11so the coast guard has responded
18:13I believe
18:14somebody has responded
18:16ok
18:17is there anything specifically we can do
18:21for you now
18:23somebody's going to come get me off this boat
18:27I've got a rocky shore beside me
18:29so I get a library out
18:31I was going to get towners on the rocks
18:32yeah roger that
18:34ok
18:37ok we've got your position
18:40can you see
18:41is there cliffs on the shore
18:43or can you see
18:45or understand what the shore might look like
18:57now after going through the checkpoint
19:07at Lazzarate
19:08you know I was awake for over
19:1030 hours
19:11you know getting the boat to the checkpoint
19:13and
19:15I chose to go
19:17down the east side
19:19of Fuente Ventura
19:21and
19:23the
19:23angle of the wind
19:26and all
19:26it was close hauled
19:27but I was
19:28I was sailing a course
19:29about 30 degrees
19:30above
19:31above the island
19:32so I was all safe
19:33and I knew I was tired
19:35so I
19:36I stood up
19:37and was smoked a cigar
19:38which helps keep me awake
19:40and I stood up there
19:42for about two hours
19:43and finally
19:44I said ok
19:45I'll sit down for a minute
19:46and the moment
19:48I sat down
19:49I obviously
19:49because I was so fatigued
19:51fell asleep
19:52and
19:53and the reason the boat
19:54hit the rocks
19:55is that
19:55the breeze
19:56velocity
19:59dropped off
20:00significantly
20:00and in doing so
20:03the hydrovane
20:04you know
20:05the boat turned
20:05turned to port
20:06towards the rocks
20:07and I was not
20:09I was not aware of that
20:10until the boat
20:11hit the rocks
20:12and
20:13and
20:15the
20:15the
20:16the action of the boat
20:17and all
20:17was very violent
20:18I was almost thrown
20:19overboard
20:20you know
20:20because I was asleep
20:21in the cockpit
20:22and
20:24but I went down below
20:25and got on the
20:27VHF radio
20:28for the May Day
20:28and
20:30each wave
20:31was like
20:31the
20:32the wave
20:32would pick the boat up
20:33you know
20:34several feet
20:35and drop it
20:36you know
20:37and I was thrown
20:37across the cabin
20:38and I'd have to
20:39crawl back up
20:40and
20:40and it did that
20:41you know
20:42for probably about
20:4330 to 45 minutes
20:45until the boat
20:46is where it's resting now
20:48and each wave
20:49actually got
20:50almost easier
20:52because the boat
20:53got more protected
20:54in the shallower water
20:55but
20:57you know
20:58it's a sad situation
20:59I truly
21:00truly
21:01when rethinking
21:02about
21:03you know
21:03if I went on the west side
21:04of the island
21:05opposed to the east
21:05I wouldn't have had
21:07a lee shore
21:07so
21:09it was a bad
21:10it was a bad decision
21:11by the skipper
21:12who was me
21:13and I'm paying
21:14I'm paying
21:15the
21:15the penalty
21:16for it today
21:17yeah
21:19it's an excellent
21:19classic
21:20hey listen
21:21can you update us
21:22on what's happening
21:23with the salvage
21:24efforts at the moment
21:25there are two companies
21:28one in Grand Canaria
21:30who is
21:31putting together
21:32a plan
21:33supposedly to float it
21:35with float bags
21:37and
21:38and there is a
21:39a local company
21:40here
21:41that is already
21:42on the beach
21:43as we speak
21:44because I just saw
21:45a video
21:46of the boat
21:46that they shot
21:47and they're
21:48contacting the authorities
21:50to see if they have
21:51permission
21:51to bring the cranes
21:52down to the beach
21:53so
21:55one of these
21:57so these companies
21:57hopefully later today
21:59can put a proposal
22:00to me
22:01I've contacted
22:03and have hired
22:04a local attorney
22:05to review
22:07the documents
22:08to make sure
22:09that
22:09you know
22:10I retain ownership
22:11of the boat
22:11you know
22:12it's not like
22:13a salvage
22:13that I'm going
22:14to pay
22:14to have them
22:14take it off
22:15but they own
22:16the boat
22:16and
22:17and then
22:19if everything
22:20proceeds to move
22:21forward
22:22the way I expect
22:23it to
22:23in the next few days
22:24the boat
22:25will be
22:26in a boat yard
22:26where I can
22:27evaluate it
22:28and repair
22:29yeah that's great
22:31okay good luck
22:32with all that
22:32and thanks for the update
22:34it's quite handy
22:35to you know
22:36I know there's a lot
22:36of people interested
22:37and we
22:38we knew all
22:39the success
22:39guy to get it off
22:40in one piece
22:41and I know
22:42you're trying
22:43to have the least
22:44environmental impact
22:45and all the rest
22:45of it
22:45and it seems
22:46the locals
22:46are looking after
22:47the boat
22:48the boat has not
22:49caused any
22:50environmental impact
22:52the diesel fuel
22:53was evacuated
22:54from the boat
22:55the very next day
22:56there's no damage
22:59to a reef
23:01it's lava rocks
23:02there's nothing
23:04there except
23:04slime
23:05on the rocks
23:06yeah
23:07these rocks
23:09go wet
23:09and dry
23:10wet and dry
23:11depending on
23:11the tides
23:12so
23:13there's no damage
23:16which I'm very
23:16happy about
23:17obviously
23:18and the locals
23:18have been keeping
23:19an eye on the boat
23:19for you
23:20which is really cool
23:20yeah
23:21yeah
23:21that too
23:22that too
23:22so
23:23yeah
23:23yep
23:23alright
23:24that's great
23:25thanks for the update
23:25guy
23:26and we'll
23:26keep up with it
23:27and good luck

23:43to the side
23:43of her hull
23:44and also
23:45the bottom
23:46of her keel
23:47it is bigger
23:49than I had
23:49originally
23:50anticipated
23:51but it is not
23:53insurmountable
23:54there's a little
23:56little tick
23:56on the bottom
23:57of her rudder
23:58and of course
24:00this side
24:00of the boat
24:01is all
24:03okay
24:04but there's
24:06her name

24:25and we'll
24:26devise a
24:27plan to
24:28fix her
24:29and get her
24:29back in the
24:30water
24:30so the next
24:32update

24:34for your
24:34support
24:34really appreciate
24:35it
24:36love you guys
24:37bye now
24:53there's only
25:14about 220 people
25:15who've done it
25:15and if you want
25:16to take on the
25:17toughest challenge
25:18there is
25:18that's it
25:19the Sunday Times
25:20Golden Globe
25:21will be awarded
25:21to the first
25:22non-stop
25:23circumnavigator
25:24of the world
25:25I can remember
25:26someone coming up
25:27to me and saying
25:27you there's Johnny
25:28who thinks he can
25:28sell solo
25:29non-stop
25:29around the world
25:30and I said
25:31we're going to try it
25:32it was the first
25:32ever
25:33round the world
25:34Yot race
25:34you know
25:35out of the nine
25:36entries
25:36only one finish
25:37but to rerun it
25:40under the same
25:41conditions
25:41makes it very
25:42very interesting
25:43so you're really
25:43going back in time
25:44it's not something
25:49you do with your
25:49mind at this point
25:50you do with your
25:51heart and you just
25:52try it with yourself
25:53this is the longest
25:55sport event in sport
25:56history
25:57if anyone ever says
25:58this is ridiculous
25:59he's being reckless
26:00I'd just say sorry
26:01he's not
26:01he's being a real
26:02seaman
26:03there'll be people
26:04that'll say
26:04oh the boats
26:05aren't safe
26:06do you have to
26:07spend a million
26:07dollars to buy
26:08a 60 footer
26:09that does all
26:10this fancy stuff
26:10does the little
26:11guy not go
26:12there's no way
26:13the race has held
26:16that appeal
26:16because these
26:17grand authors
26:18made it sound
26:20really attainable
26:21we're putting
26:21in half of
26:22everything we own
26:22in this race
26:23and it'd be nice
26:24to have something
26:24left at the end
26:25miss
26:26just look at
26:27devastation
26:28single-handed
26:28sailors
26:29don't obey rules
26:30so it's a recipe
26:30for disaster
26:31I'm coming
26:32I can't make
26:34a jury
26:34the only thing
26:35that's left
26:36is a hole
26:36I was just
26:38praying somebody
26:39would get there
26:39before I would
26:40I never thought
26:42I was gonna
26:43see him again
26:43we started
26:44with 18
26:45and we're now
26:45down to 7
26:46so you're still
26:47having fun
26:48then
26:48not to come
26:50here
26:51it's very difficult
26:51we don't need
26:53millions
26:54you know
26:54to do
26:55sailboat racing
26:56we don't need
26:57all that modern
26:58technology
26:58to fulfill
26:59a dream
27:00I'm gonna be
27:05constable
27:06but I'm gonna do it
27:07he hasn't given up
27:16that's the bottom line
27:17you look at
27:31it all
27:32you
27:32you
27:33you
