06:47I just know that I'm realizing it how long it is and I just want to pace myself there's no need to rush it and I think yeah my headspace is good I feel I feel clear yeah I feel pretty content with a lot of things but at the same time there's been a lot of moments where I'm like what am I doing it's just a back and forth and I think the main thing that I've
07:17come away with is trying not to focus on being pleased while I'm out there don't like search for this joy don't search for like meaning and purpose in what I'm doing instead just do it and I'll find the joy in that like you know all these joys that have happened so far in the trip have been like totally by surprise you know they're not ones that you are looking for they just happen so it's
07:46like things just happen when you're being present and so as soon as you're trying to be present it messes with it so I'm kind of learning about that in like a intense way and I've been reading a lot mainly novels I don't really have many like non I don't have much nonfiction
08:08um so I read I try and play guitar I try and do yoga and or some uh key gong um you're thinking of you're thinking of people yeah I think you're looking back I mean you're so young you know you've got such a short life so far
08:26you're reminiscing yeah yeah definitely there's a lot of reminiscing I think about my girlfriend I think about my dad
08:34um about my friends Corey and Troy and oh yeah a bunch of the the homies and um I think about
08:41just how much like how many little time like I think about whenever I'm like getting overwhelmed out there
08:50I'm like why am I doing this and I think about how many people have entered my life through this race I'm
08:55like whoa and I've met so many rad people and made so many good connections and so have you any any flaws in
09:01in the boat in terms of you're thinking oh wow how's this going to cope in the southern ocean and
09:05you know how long is it going to last in anything like that on the boat you know that you're worried
09:09about um there are things I'm a little worried about leaks um and just the boat being wet and
09:20I'm worried about I reshimmed the mast but I'm still a little worried about it um so I reshimmed it all
09:29and it seems really good and it's held perfect the past three or four days and I don't get weeks
09:34anymore through there because I redid it all um I'm a little worried about power that I won't be
09:43able to use the HF much at all in the southern ocean from lack of sun down there yeah um I feel
09:49confident in the rig I feel confident in the sails um I you know my jib is fine right now and I still
09:57have a whole nother one I'm going to use for the southern ocean that's pretty much brand new
10:00yeah so I feel really good about that the stasel we'll see how long it lasts it's already getting
10:05a little tired yeah I think about the southern ocean um I think about honestly a lot of my time
10:14spend spending am I going to heave to in the storms or am I going to run and drag shit and then I'm like
10:23what am I going to drag do I put chain on the on my rope or just do warp on a bite do I put the
10:30little drogue I have on I mean I'm just like I that's my biggest worry is not having experience
10:36with 30 foot waves and like and uh so I I've been reading a lot but it doesn't help because
10:44everyone's got their own damn opinion these are all from Maddie there it's labeled um these are all
10:53letters to friends from uh but if we can get them to Josh or Maddie just send them to somebody and
10:59and they'll get into the right people
11:19good luck eh yeah okay
11:21good seeing you guys
11:28it was great to see you
11:42teach me how to live
11:45and love to be safe today
11:49hey
11:58life who understands a single moment of it
12:02uh we're at 20 i don't know
12:1624 degrees
12:19uh maybe 25 degrees south
12:2124 degrees west or or even more or yeah west we're headed southeast still
12:30um and it's it's beautiful out and it's finally getting it's getting cool
12:37it's shockingly uh
12:39uh kind of crisp out it reminds me a little bit of uh
12:44uh you know winter in florida it's beautiful
12:51things have been good
12:58it's funny i i write a lot and i feel like i and i read all the time
13:04in some ways i think my reading and writing has gotten really uh good
13:12but my speaking has gotten worse because i don't talk much
13:15these days so in front of the camera it's even worse
13:24there's not a lot to be said sometimes you're just here
13:27and that's good you know it's really beautiful to be present
13:38it's like this is
13:40all that i'm supposed to be doing
13:47if i can sometimes it feels like that like all i'm supposed to be doing is just sailing this boat
13:51around the world
13:55it's so stupid
13:58it's so silly and pointless
14:01and i don't know what it what i'm doing or why i'm doing it
14:05but i'm i'm doing it i'm pushing the button it's uh like in lost when they find desmond who was
14:15sailing around the world in a race and crashed his boat on an island hopefully that doesn't happen
14:22and then he gets conned into pushing a button for like the rest of his life just typing in these
14:27numbers and pushing in a button and uh sometimes that's what life feels like you're just like
14:32like a program you're just like okay i'm gonna keep doing this because that's what i'm i think i'm
14:38supposed to do or maybe because you're scared of what else could happen obviously there's a million
14:45ways to interpret that a lot you know what they're trying to say in the show i'm not saying that's
14:50what this race is i'm not saying it's not
15:02i hope i see the green flash tonight oh that would be sick
15:12hello elliot welcome to cape town um first of all uh don and jane and aida uh send their very best
15:20regards to you oh yeah epic thank you good uh good to be here are you uh any reservations about the
15:27southern ocean going in there now um not really i'm pretty stoked um i think yesterday or the day
15:36before maybe was kind of the beginning of seeing big swell and i was really exciting and uh i can't
15:44wait to see even bigger so uh yeah it just got me excited more than scared which was surprising i'm not
15:51looking forward to you know any 80 knot winds but uh otherwise yeah i'm stoked you uh you're such a
15:59gregarious guy says this is a stupid question do you miss people a lot uh yeah i miss a lot i mean
16:08it goes back and forth you know some days um like i could do it forever and i feel like it's no issue at
16:16all i could be alone rest my life and be happy and then some days i'm shooting myself in the foot
16:23really missing people and yeah it's just been a crazy ride you know uh vanya one of my uh mentors uh
16:31for the race and just he's just helped out a ton basically my manager him and josh uh just thank you
16:38so much for all their hard work i mean i wouldn't be here without them and then uh also to vanya
16:47he always said that there's no shame and he wouldn't be uh at all uh you know upset if i
16:55banged a riot in the equator and went to the caribbean back home to florida but i didn't do it i'm here so
17:04so it's just crazy to think that i'm here you know afforded away around the world already and
17:09uh so i think if i can do it i'm trying to say that anybody can do anything not just sail around
17:18the world but maybe it's just quitting a job or starting a job or whatever yeah so a long time ago
17:26only like four years ago i started sailing and i got hooked really really fast and it just all the
17:34romanticism about it really fascinated me and then one day i found myself uh buying a tiny little sailboat
17:41uh pierce and triton for next to nothing sailed it around the caribbean and uh the east coast of the
17:48u.s then i read uh metisier's book and uh said i gotta do that i gotta sail around the world and without
17:59stopping there's nothing more zen and pointless than that and so i uh started dreaming about it and
18:06put it out there and uh you know asked to be in the race and john said sure yeah we'd love it
18:14you meet the requirements i was like sort of barely and so i did and uh then i i mean i had no money i
18:22sold the boat for like two thousand dollars and that was all i had and then i bought a van with it
18:27so i was living out of a van saying i was in the golden globe race which was really nice to say
18:35you're in the golden globe race but i didn't have a boat it was a year and a half away and everybody
18:41else had been preparing for three or four i you know i didn't have a i didn't have any money uh and
18:48then all of a sudden uh people started believing in me for some reason and uh thinking that maybe he's
18:54the shit he might be crazy enough to actually do it and then one guy vanya stepped up and
19:00said dude i'm in i want to help find the boat and i was looking for boats within a certain price range
19:08and i wanted a gale force 34. i don't know why i just did and the first one there's only 25 of them
19:17made and the first one fell through and i was super bummed i wouldn't find another one from the
19:22exterior and then all of a sudden another one came up because i clocked him down in my price range
19:29i'm all so excited i'm like oh my god i'm gonna get this boat which means i have no idea what condition
19:34it's in but i'm gonna get it and and then what's the name of the boat what's the name of the boat the
19:39guy's like oh second wind and uh at that point i knew it was like destiny because i i uh have a tattoo
19:49uh in honor of my mom uh that's labeled the second wind uh my mom passed away in high school and in
19:56order to remember i got that tattoo you know the second wind just being uh such a beautiful idea that
20:04you don't get your second boost second wind until you give everything 110 percent and uh she believed
20:12in that you know physically spiritually mentally everything and so when i heard the name of the
20:18boat i just i knew that this is what i'm supposed to do and i don't know why there's a lot of times out
20:27here and so far that i like why the heck am i out here doing this you know because i love cruising and
20:35i love people and i love meeting new cultures so why am i doing this race and then but then i think
20:42about all the beautiful things that have happened that led me to getting here and all the stories that
20:49have aligned it's just been insane you know that's just being one of them so that's the story
20:57that's right
21:14from there round and round and round don't go too many loops
21:25that's awesome absolutely no group and they're adorable
21:55Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
22:25Yeah, it's been a hell of an adventure and I'm very thankful that I've made it this far and just kind of trying to take my blessings as I have them and thinking back, I got a lot of time to sit still and kind of think about what this trip has been and what it's meant for me and I'm really excited for that time to rest and reflect.
22:55And I really appreciate everything.
23:01Yeah, I'm stoked to be here.
23:03Cool. Well, I'm glad to have you here, mate.
23:04And look, hopefully we can look after you and I know you've got some decisions and things to make and whatever.
23:11So whatever support we can give, you know, just sing out.
23:14So welcome and once again, congratulations.
23:17Yeah, and thank you everybody that's been following and cheering me on and you have no idea what it means.
23:24It's really, it's a beautiful story and I'm really blessed to be the subject.
23:33But excited to not be the subject pretty soon.
23:37Good on you. Thanks very much, Elliot.
23:39Yeah, cheers.
23:39There's only about 220 people who've done it and if you want to take on the toughest challenge there is, that's it.
24:04The Sunday Times Golden Globe will be awarded to the first non-stop circumnavigator of the world.
24:11I can remember someone coming up to me and saying, you know, there's Johnny who thinks he can sell solo non-stop around the world.
24:16And I said, we're going to try it.
24:17It was the first ever round the world Yot race.
24:20You know, out of the nine entries, only one finish.
24:23But to rerun it under the same conditions makes it very, very interesting.
24:29So you're really going back in time.
24:30It's not something you do with your mind at this point.
24:37You do with your heart and you just try with yourself.
24:39This is the longest sport event in sport history.
24:43If anyone ever says, this is ridiculous, he's being reckless, I'd just say, sorry, he's not.
24:47He's being a real seaman.
24:49There'll be people that will say, oh, the boats aren't safe.
24:52Do you have to spend a million dollars to buy a 60-footer that does all this fancy stuff?
24:56Does the little guy not go?
24:58There's no way.
24:59The race has held that appeal because these grand authors made it sound really attainable.
25:07We're putting in half of everything we own in this race and it'd be nice to have something left at the end.
25:11Miss!
25:12Just look at the devastation.
25:14Single-handed sailors don't buy rules, so it's a recipe for disaster.
25:17I'm coming.
25:19I can't make a jury, Rick.
25:21The only thing that's left is a hole.
25:23I was just praying somebody would get there before I would.
25:26I never thought I was going to see him again.
25:29We started with 18 and we're now down to 7.
25:32So you're still having fun then?
25:34Not to come here.
25:36It's very difficult.
25:37We don't need millions, you know, to do sailboat racing.
25:42We don't need all that modern technology to fulfill a dream.
25:45We're not going to be comfortable, but I'm going to do it.
26:01He hasn't given up.
26:02That's the bottom line.
26:02He hasn't given up.
26:08He hasn't given up.
26:24He just gave up.
