00:00I'm on a standing ovation for Ed Sheeran.
00:03Nice to see you, buddy.
00:04Nice to see you, man.
00:07Welcome back to the show, and Happy Thanksgiving.
00:11Thank you for joining us on Thanksgiving.
00:13Happy Thanksgiving to you. Happy Thanksgiving, yeah.
00:15Over the years, have you been in the States for Thanksgiving?
00:18I've done one Thanksgiving here, yeah, in 2013.
00:22But other than that, yeah, just one.
00:24So this means this is now official.
00:28Yeah, it's official. What do you think of Thanksgiving?
00:31I question the marshmallows and the sweet potato.
00:34Okay, yeah, yeah.
00:36Me, too.
00:36I know it's a tradition, but I question it.
00:39Yeah, I question it as well, yeah.
00:41We got to see each other a couple weeks ago at the Knicks game.
00:44Yeah, that was random, because I had this empty seat next to me
00:48for, like, the first 10 minutes of the game,
00:49and then suddenly I'm just like, oh, hey, Jimmy.
00:51It was fun. It was a little stressful.
00:54I don't know. They gave us really great seats.
00:58And we were sitting next to the team.
00:59Yeah, I think, for me, like, basketball,
01:02we don't really have that in England.
01:04So to experience it like that is, like, incredible,
01:08seeing the kind of...
01:09They're giant.
01:10Huge.
01:11Yes. Huge.
01:12Yeah. What's your team, your soccer team?
01:15Ipswich Town Football Club. Let's go.
01:17Yeah. All right. That's it, yeah.
01:19As I said at the Knicks game, they're now your team.
01:22They are. Okay, that'll be my team.
01:23I know. All right.
01:24It's kind of like the Knicks. They never really do that well.
01:27No, no. No, we won't. No.
01:29The Knicks have a shot. No.
01:31The Knicks have a shot this year.
01:32So do Ipswich, Jimmy.
01:33Okay, all right, all right. Yeah, we do.
01:36Yeah, I saw something on guitar.com, I think it was the article,
01:41but someone went around Instagram, and it said,
01:44Ed Sheeran is inspiring more people to play the guitar
01:47than the Beatles, according to a new study.
01:51They looked at, like, songwriting apps and how to play guitar,
01:54and you have outdone all of these.
01:58That's a mad stat. Yeah.
02:01Yeah. I wanted to surprise you with that.
02:04I thought you'd be impressed with yourself.
02:05Do you know what? I actually love that.
02:08My whole career and ethos is I love meeting kids
02:13who are just getting into music and being there, like,
02:16what do I do? And to be honest, like,
02:17I don't know that much about the guitar.
02:20I can play four or five chords quite well,
02:24and that's what I just say to them.
02:26I just say, learn the four or five chords.
02:27Most songs have these four or five chords in,
02:30and I think that when I was growing up, music just seemed,
02:33it was like reading music, and it was complicated,
02:35and I think that music, it can just be felt.
02:38Like, the Beatles did not learn music theory.
02:40They just learned. They picked up a guitar,
02:42and they just learned chords and feel,
02:45and I think that's so much of music.
02:47So that's a cool stat. I like that.
02:49Yeah. You're inspiring a lot of kids out there
02:51to pick up the guitar and play.
02:53It's good. That's what it's all about.
02:55Yeah.
02:57Since you've been on the show,
02:59you were on our show less than a year ago,
03:01and a lot has already happened.
03:02I mean, your new album, Play, came out.
03:05You were on the Time 100 list of most influential people.
03:08You've had songs in two movies.
03:12You had the song Drive and F1, which I loved.
03:14Yeah. I was like, that's it.
03:16I loved it.
03:17And then you have a new song in Zootopia 2.
03:20I wrote, yeah, I wrote with, yeah.
03:24Do you know what? I've collaborated with Shakira
03:26quite a lot over the years, but nothing's come out,
03:28and she was like, she's Gazelle in Zootopia.
03:31And she said, they need a song for Zootopia 2.
03:34Would you write it with me?
03:35So me, my friend Blake and her wrote this song.
03:37I don't sing. Well, I kind of do sing on it, but background stuff.
03:41Background stuff.
03:42But, no, I buzzed. I watched it the other day.
03:44I just, you know when you're, like, I got kids,
03:47and they like Zootopia, so there's something.
03:49They gave me a part in it as well.
03:50I'm a sheep, Ed Sheeran.
03:53Ed Sheeran. I get it.
03:55I get it.
03:57It's, um, no, it's...
03:58They're clever. They're clever.
04:00Yeah, I buzz with it.
04:01Like, it's great.
04:04But, I mean, you love movies, but I found this out,
04:08that you also collect movie memorabilia.
04:10Yeah, I do.
04:11I did not know this about you.
04:12No, I do, yeah. Well, it started out,
04:14it used to be, like, every birthday, I'd buy one prop,
04:17and then it just sort of bled into I just started
04:20getting lots of props.
04:21Like, what things do you own? Like, what's...
04:23I think the coolest thing that I own is I have the Pan costume
04:27from Hook and Rufio's sword, which, um...
04:29Robin Williams?
04:30Robin Williams, yeah.
04:31And I bought the Hook. I bought Hook's hat.
04:34I bought the note that Hook puts on Peter's hat.
04:36You like that movie.
04:37I like Hook, yeah.
04:38Yeah, you like Hook.
04:40Yeah, stuff like that.
04:40I bought the original Jumanji set from the 97 film.
04:44Like, so mostly Robin Williams stuff, to be honest.
04:46Yeah, right. Oh, my gosh.
04:48What else?
04:49Like, Star Wars stuff?
04:51Yeah, I bought C-3PO.
04:53Yeah.
04:55You have a C-3PO?
04:57He wasn't cheap.
04:58Wow.
04:59Not, like, a Lego C-3PO.
05:01No, no, it wasn't from the old movies.
05:03It was from one of the new ones.
05:04Doesn't matter.
05:05Yeah, no, there's a few.
05:06So I got the retractable knife from Goodfellas
05:09from that first scene.
05:11Yeah.
05:13Do you have any superhero stuff?
05:16Yeah, do you know what?
05:17So my favorite Batman film is everyone else's
05:20least favorite Batman film.
05:22I was six when it came out.
05:24It was Batman and Robin, the George Clooney one.
05:25And so all this memorabilia is sort of, like, up for grabs.
05:29So I bought Robin, bought Batgirl, bought Batman.
05:33Yeah.
05:35I'm waiting on Mr. Freeze.
05:37All right, Mr. Freeze is the one you got to get.
05:38Nice to see you.
05:39Yeah.
05:41That is so funny.
05:43What a movie.
05:44That was fantastic.
05:45I loved it.
05:46You're about to go on tour again next year.
05:49This one's called The Loop Tour.
05:50Yeah.
05:51You love going on tour?
05:52Yeah, I can't.
05:53Yeah, I love playing live.
05:55I feel like the two things that make me happiest in my job
05:57are writing songs and playing live.
05:59And I feel like the more that I can just do them
06:00and less of everything else, then it would be better.
06:04So I just tour and tour and tour.
06:05Yeah, you're great at it.
06:06You might as well.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Before then, though, fans can see you right now
06:10performing your new special.
06:12Yeah.
06:13This is called One Shot with Ed Sheeran.
06:15And it came out last week.
06:17Tell everyone what this thing is.
06:19I mean, it's essentially a show that is all done
06:24with one camera and one shot.
06:25Yes, all in one shot, no edits.
06:27All in one shot, yeah.
06:28Yeah, so how difficult is it to pull off a movie in one shot?
06:32I mean, it definitely, like, has its challenges,
06:35but actually, it's probably easier
06:37if I just show you now.
06:38Can I borrow one of these cameras?
06:39Sure.
06:40I mean, we don't normally do an interview like this
06:49with the one camera thing, but we'll try it now.
06:53How do you get inspired to do a special in one shot?
06:57Well, I got asked to do, like, a concert special in a theater,
07:00and I've seen that done before, and I've done that before.
07:03So I just wanted to do something different.
07:04I'd watched Adolescence and Boiling Point.
07:07Oh, brilliant.
07:08And it's this guy, Phil Barantini.
07:10We got in touch with Phil.
07:11He said he'd want to do it.
07:12So, yeah, we basically organized it to be done in New York,
07:16which is an iconic city for music,
07:18but also, like, it's a stressful city to film in.
07:21Oh, yeah, but it's the most energetic city.
07:25Well, I just wanted it to feel, like, challenging,
07:27if that makes sense, you know?
07:28Yeah, because you actually can't have actors.
07:32Yeah, no, no, it's essentially just people on the street, really.
07:35Yeah.
07:36Hey, can you please sign this?
07:37Absolutely, yeah.
07:38Oh, that's nice.
07:39Yeah, I mean, they aren't actors.
07:41Yeah, you got to be real.
07:42Could you sign this?
07:43Oh, cool tattoo, man. Yeah, definitely.
07:46Awesome. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:47I mean, these people are, like, if one person makes the wrong move
07:51or something like that, you have to kind of redo the whole thing.
07:54Yeah, so it was, like, it was pretty, like, yeah.
07:56Got a food delivery here. Need you to sign for this?
07:58Yeah, I mean, it was stressful.
08:03We kind of had, like, what we did.
08:04Oh, my gosh, the guy stole my purse!
08:07Oh!
08:08It was, like, one of these things where you didn't really know
08:11what was going to go on next.
08:13Thank you so much. Thank you.
08:14Yeah, but then you'd have to redo the whole thing if you missed one.
08:17Yeah, so we only got straight to it.
08:18Are you Munganya?
08:19Hey.
08:20Are you Munganya?
08:21Who's this guy?
08:22Munganya?
08:23Munganya.
08:24Oh, yeah, Munganya.
08:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:27He's my Munganya.
08:29You've got some interesting friends.
08:30Yeah, but, I mean, you come into this city.
08:32Do you mind if I just whittle for a second?
08:33No, you can go for it if you'd like to.
08:35We always have a pre-stump ready to go here if you want to whittle in.
08:39But it's that energy that you just...
08:41Happy Thanksgiving.
08:42Oh, my gosh. Ed, this is fantastic.
08:44You know, I've been whittling for a few years.
08:46It's like a hobby of mine that I quite like doing.
08:48I mean, but you go in. How many songs?
08:50I mean, you have to choose from so many songs.
08:52Probably about 14 songs that we do, but the way that...
08:56Nice one, man.
08:57The way that we choose it is we basically, you know,
09:00there's a party scene with the girls,
09:01so we use bad habits for the party scene.
09:03Let me just take this one.
09:0518 is in the taxi that we do.
09:08There you go, man.
09:09There you go, man.
09:20You did a good job.
09:21There you go. Happy Thanksgiving.
09:23Happy Thanksgiving.
09:24There you go, bud.
09:26Yeah, I mean, you...
09:28Hey, E.T.
09:29You get to do all that.
09:32I have the acoustics in the cab.
09:34Hey, look, there's two guitars.
09:35Oh.
09:36Oh, this is perfect. You got to play something.
09:38Nice special streaming right now.
09:53You can watch it on Netflix.
09:58It's called One Shot.
10:02One Shot.
10:05If you're with your family, this is something to watch.
10:10It's Thanksgiving time, so take a chance.
10:15Sit on the couch and I'll burn your pants.
10:20Watch.
10:21Watch.
10:22Watch.
10:23Watch.
10:24Watch.
10:25Watch.
10:26Watch.
10:27Watch.
10:32Watch.
10:33Ed Sheeran, everybody.
10:36More with Ed after the break.
10:38Stick around.
10:39Good job.
10:40Good job.
10:41Good job, guys.
