The 'Wakanda Forever' actress said she relates to Butler after undergoing a similar situation with Tina Turner's voice following 'What's Love Got to Do With It.'
Transcript
00:00Angela Bassett is sharing her thoughts on all the chatter surrounding Austin Butler still
00:04sounding like Elvis, saying he needs to bid it farewell. During a conversation with The New
00:10Yorker, Bassett was asked whether her Oscar-nominated role as Tina Turner in the 1993
00:15biopic What's Love Got To Do With It took over her brain in the way that the part of Elvis Presley
00:21seemingly impacted Butler. The actress replied that this was absolutely the case for her,
00:26and she even gave a high-pitched Turner-style laugh to prove it. Tina's laugh and the way she spoke
00:32took over. It took over not as long as Elvis, maybe about four months after. You so lived and
00:38breathed and began to see life through their perspective. You had to. They're a part of you.
00:43She continued, I think that's what's going on with him. You have to bid it farewell,
00:47and it's hard to let it go because you've enjoyed it. You survived it. You delivered,
00:51and you're proud of that. You've got an opportunity, and you hit it out of left field,
00:55so it takes a moment to get back to regular you. But you're different after this moment.
01:00Now you're Austin, who did that great performance.
01:03Butler's voice change was widely discussed at last month's Golden Globes when viewers felt
01:07that his acceptance speech appeared to be delivered in a similar voice to the one he
01:11used for the role of Elvis, with many saying the actor sounded different prior to him taking on the
01:17role.
01:17I just am so grateful right now. I'm in this room full of my heroes. Brad, I love you.
01:23While addressing reporters backstage after his win, Butler said,
01:26I don't think I sound like him still, but I guess I must because I hear it a lot.
01:30During a recent visit to The Graham Norton Show, Butler said that all of his singing for the film
01:35destroyed my voice a bit.
01:37I try to stay off social media, so my publicist told me, you know,
01:40people are talking about your voice and these sorts of things, and it really made me self-conscious
01:43for a second because I thought, am I being phony? Is this not my voice?
