00:09box office breakout, Knives Out. The Rian Johnson-helmed whodunit murder mystery was
00:14a shining light for original films in a year dominated by sequels and franchises.
00:18And as the film concludes yet another strong weekend at the box office, Johnson is
00:23already working on its follow-up, lining up a potential franchise for Lionsgate.
00:27The writer-director spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at Lionsgate's pre-Golden Globes
00:31party over the weekend, revealing that he's developing a sequel centered around
00:35Daniel Craig's southern detective Benoit Blanc, this time investigating a new case.
00:40Johnson's producing partner, Ron Bergman, also chimed in, adding that Craig was even
00:44up for the challenge, saying the actor was eager to tackle the role again.
00:47The $40 million original film, with an ensemble cast featuring Chris Evans,
00:52Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer and Toni Collette among others, grossed nearly
00:56$250 million worldwide and went on to earn three Golden Globe nominations, including
01:02Best Comedy Musical Picture, Best Comedy Musical Actor for Craig and Best Comedy
01:06Musical Actress for Ana de Armas. While Lionsgate has not officially greenlit a Knives Out
01:11sequel, given the film's success, it could be the beginning of a lucrative franchise for the
01:15studio and for Craig as he wraps up his stint portraying James Bond in the upcoming
