00:00Come on Fletchers
00:02We've reached our fourth year in farming
00:05Can you actually eat that?
00:08And we've fallen for this way of life
00:11Hook, line and sinker
00:13Can you keep this?
00:16Right Milo, let's get some jobs done
00:19Farming's a breeze
00:21Compared to having four kids
00:24We're surrounded by the spectacular peat district
00:28As far as an office goes, it's pretty good, isn't it?
00:32With ancient woodlands
00:35What about Dad there?
00:37And rolling hills as their playground
00:40Ready?
00:42This year, we've big plans to increase our flock
00:47No, Mum!
00:50And herd
00:52Can I ride on him?
00:54Oh, you can't ride on him, no
00:56We're just continuing to diversify
00:58What about if we created some sort of farm musical?
01:02Kevin, we've got enough to do
01:03We're not creating a farm bantam
01:05And we're excited about what our next chapter might hold
01:09I can't think of something that would beat this for me
01:12This is my version of a happy, full life
01:14Right, let's get some cup of tea then
01:16This week on our farm
01:30Our nerves are on edge as vet Hugo checks our herd
01:34Big day today, TB results day
01:36So naturally this is when the nerves kick in
01:39Because, you know, it can be devastating
01:41And we also keep everything crossed for the pitter-patter of tiny hooves
01:46This is the next test
01:47We've got to get Ruby in
01:48And find out, one, if she's back in calf
01:50And two, when she's due
01:51Mateus gets stuck into some farm jobs
01:54It's quite heavy
01:56Heavy, isn't it?
01:57I'm stronger
01:58You are stronger
01:59Because I eat my dinner
02:01Yes
02:02All of it
02:03All of it
02:04And I have grand plans to become
02:06The greatest showman in Cheshire
02:08We could create a farm musical
02:11It could almost be our story
02:14Two actors
02:16What?
02:18Kevin, we've got enough to do
02:20We're not creating a farm bantam
02:22A new day means more newborns
02:39And our twins Maximus and Mateus
02:42Are helping to protect the lambs against infection
02:44By spraying them with iodine
02:46Good lad
02:47Again
02:48Good lad
02:50And we put it down
02:51And then what's that?
02:52That's a
02:53A little girl
02:54That's a ewe lamp
02:55And that's yours Maximus
02:56So you can name her
02:58Good boy
02:59Hiya lanny
03:01Hiya lanny
03:02Hiya
03:03Right Mateus
03:04You spray that one darling
03:07Good lad
03:09And this one
03:10Is a little girl too
03:12What do you want to call her?
03:13Call her
03:14Darling
03:15Oh
03:16Okay then
03:17Oh
03:18And while Milo is on cleaning duties
03:20Marnie is heading to the paddock
03:22To check on her young Jacobs
03:24Get out
03:26Get out
03:27Get out
03:28Get out sheep
03:29Get out
03:30Get out
03:31Get out
03:32Get out
03:33Get out
03:34Get out
03:35So the Jacobs are running towards me
03:38The sheep looks in great shape already
03:41All of her lambs arrived without a hitch
03:44And they've been turned out to enjoy the fresh spring grass in the sunshine
03:48There's this one sheep and I meant to have another two double but I don't know where the second one is
03:55One, two, three, four, I need one more
03:58Where's my other one?
04:00This year Marnie is flying solo with her flock and we couldn't be prouder of the work she's putting in to rear them
04:07My lambing season was quite good, I think the lambs came out very good, just one little lamb's a bit slim but we can get that
04:17The first time when I was lambing it felt like a bit nerve-wracking
04:22I was just like really worried, really scared but I feel very proud, I think they've lambed very well
04:27I think they've done a great job
04:30Marnie's hues have produced five healthy boys
04:33All Marnie needs to do now is make sure they're all present and correct and growing well
04:39The plan is to get some more sheep
04:42So then when I've got enough sheep I can then make lamb boxes, my lamb boxes, Marnie's lamb boxes
04:49Or I can give them to market when you want some money
04:54Right, I've got to look for that last one
04:57Think like children's lecture
05:03While Marnie channels my sheep wrangling skills, the twins are helping to settle the next set of newborns
05:09What we're going to do now, we've set the pen up ready
05:13So we're going to take the two lambs and the mummy will hopefully follow
05:17So I want you boys to get a lamb eat
05:19Show me your muscles before you pick
05:21Big muscles, yeah?
05:22Big muscles, right
05:27You can have that one
05:28A bit strong
05:29Two hands
05:30Your left belt max, babe, because I cannot hold two
05:32And a baby
05:33Strong, be strong, mate
05:34Come on
05:35There we go
05:36Come on, say come on
05:38Come on
05:39There you go
05:40In you go
05:41Shut
05:42Yay
05:43Well done
05:44Well done
05:45Well done, kids
05:46Well done
05:47High five
05:48Right, all my Jacobs are over there
05:52So that's three
05:54One, two
05:56Five
05:57So I've got five
05:59To be fair with you, they're all, all the sheep, my dad and mine
06:04They all look pretty healthy
06:06Who's the cutest out of you two?
06:22With the animals all fed and watered, we can turn our attention to the next big task on our to-do list
06:29Good lad
06:30While Marnie and Milo are at school, they get a bit of them time with us, they get to get all the attention
06:35We need one more little piece of wood
06:37Hey, that was good
06:41The work on renovating the farmhouse has been delayed while the insurance claim gets sorted
06:47But that hasn't stopped us exploring other renovation work that we can do in the meantime
06:52So it should be warm, dry, practical
06:56But still have that rustic farm feel
06:59Yeah, yeah
07:00We're always exploring new ways to generate revenue
07:04With that in mind, we're turning our focus to the barn
07:08And we have some exciting plans in the works
07:11But we need to get cracking
07:13So this was our old stable block
07:15And we've decided to kind of convert it into a bit of an event space
07:21All-encompassing space that we can have our little farm events here
07:26But the biggest thing is we've actually agreed to have a wedding here
07:31In September, four months away
07:33I know, when we agreed to it, it felt like it was years away
07:37And now it's come round quickly, hasn't it?
07:40They asked us twelve months ago and we were like, oh, it'll be done by April
07:44We have had a house fire, we have had a house fire, let's not forget that
07:48The plan this year was to build this barn, was to do this barn
07:51What we're doing this year is not only farming, but doing this barn and rebuilding our own house
07:56True
07:57Having had a fire, so we've had, there's been a few curveballs
08:00There's a lot on the list
08:01But you know
08:02With the big day fast approaching, Liz is letting her creative juices run wild
08:08Working her magic to turn this tired old barn into a glamorous wedding venue
08:13I just want everything to be like wood inside
08:17So basically how it looks outside, but on the inside
08:20So you don't see any of the brick
08:23A nice concrete floor
08:25And then I want some really old antique, if I can find any, barn doors
08:30On both sides
08:33So we'll have two nice antique barn doors on there
08:36Two doors, alright, okay
08:37So this needs ripping out
08:38Yeah, we're going to get rid of all that
08:40So it's just a full, empty space
08:42We've always said there's so much potential
08:44So this is phase one
08:46Getting it ready for September for the wedding
08:49And hopefully, you know, who knows, it might be
08:52We might have more weddings in the future
08:54We just need to have a clear plan
08:56I mean, they were excited about it looking like this
08:58They were like, this is fine
09:00We got married in an old decommissioned church
09:03Which was again, not a barn, but an empty space
09:06That we decorated the way we wanted
09:09And I think that's the vision that we have here
09:11That this is an empty space
09:12And whatever we do here, we can decorate the way we want
09:15I mean, we've been married ten years this year
09:18We could get remarried here
09:20Ten years this year, isn't it?
09:21Hey, we could have a party here for our anniversary
09:24Couldn't we have a ten-year anniversary in here?
09:26Oh, we could, yeah!
09:27We could have...
09:28Why don't we do that?
09:29A ten-year anniversary party in the barn
09:30Party, yeah
09:31Yeah
09:3228th of November
09:33We should do it
09:35That's a good idea
09:36My God, shall I wear my wedding dress?
09:39Don't even know who it is
09:41Well, first things first is someone else's wedding
09:44After talking through the plan, it's become clear
09:48We've got a massive job ahead of us
09:50Think less weekend project, more epic transformation
09:55First things first, empty the barn
09:58So over the next few days, this barn's got to be completely cleared out
10:02Yeah
10:03Operation barn, that's what I like
10:07The countdown starts
10:08Right, let's go
10:09Today, I've got my farming apprentice, Matthias
10:32Helping me with a few odd jobs on the farm
10:35Matthias is a proper farmer
10:38I'm not a betting man, but
10:40If I was to place a bet
10:42As to which one of the four children
10:44Would be
10:46The first in mind to
10:48Take over the Fletcher farm
10:50He'd be this lad
10:54He's not shy of a bit of hard work
10:56And he just loves being outside
10:58What I used to do is go to my Dad's work with him
11:00He used to work with trucks as a diesel fitter
11:03And I'd just be there placing in spanners
11:05And passes a 12mm and I'd have, you know, that was just my...
11:09And I loved it, I was his little apprentice
11:11And I kind of sensed that, you know, Matthias is like that with me really
11:17Anything with an engine
11:19And of course he's already got his own tractor
11:22That we're doing up at the minute
11:24Do you remember that tractor we bought?
11:26Yeah, that'll be ready soon hopefully
11:28And then you can drive it
11:30On my own?
11:31Yeah, you can
11:32You don't need Daddy
11:33That'd be good, wouldn't it?
11:36Matthias might have to wait a little while before getting behind the wheel of a vintage tractor
11:40We bought the twins last year
11:42But right now there's a few more jobs to do before I get to that
11:48After collecting the old fencing from the paddock
11:52It's now ready for sorting
11:54It's a bit of a long-winded job this one
11:58Some of the waste wood is going to be used in our bonfire at the end of the year
12:06And all the good bits we're going to, should I say Liz is going to design
12:13Kind of like a bench table
12:15Which will hopefully go in our events barn and provide the seating
12:20This has to be done because we've obviously got some events happening at the farm
12:25In our event space very soon starting with a wedding in September
12:29And then hopefully a few more after that
12:31So people are going to need somewhere to sit and have their dinner, aren't they?
12:34So all this stuff, we need to pull the nails out, give them a good sanding down
12:39And I've got a nice little job that Matthias can help me with
12:43Just like the jobs my dad used to give me
12:46See this nail, how it's all crooked, I need to take that out
12:50How?
12:51Well I'm going to show you, this is called a crowbar
12:54To get the nail out?
12:56To get the nail out, yeah, feel it, it's quite heavy
13:00It's heavy isn't it?
13:01I'm stronger
13:02You are stronger
13:03Because I eat my dinner
13:06Yes
13:07All of it
13:08All of it, yeah
13:09So what's that called?
13:10A crowbar
13:11So we get it like this
13:13Yeah
13:14And then
13:15We pull up
13:22See?
13:23Is it the big one?
13:25It's the big nail, we just got it out
13:27What we do now with that big nail, we're going to put it in that blue box
13:31So nobody stands in it
13:32Why?
13:33Because that's what we do with all the old nails
13:35And the cows will stand in it?
13:37Then the cows won't stand in it
13:39So go on, go and put that in that blue box
13:49Another one
13:51That's it
13:54One
13:55Two
13:59All the nails are out
14:01All the nails are out
14:03Yeah
14:04My little handyman is soaking up skills that I'm hoping will prepare him for his own farming journey
14:10Alongside his brothers and big sister who are currently on their own adventure with their mum
14:15Liz is taking Marnie, Maximus and Milo for a spot of fishing
14:35Come on Maximus
14:37Right, let's go over here
14:39Over there please
14:41Come on, let's see if we can see any tadpoles
14:46First, what do we need to collect tadpoles?
14:48Er, with a bucket
14:50We need some water in this bucket
14:52And then when you scoop them up, you can pour them in here
14:55So let me down first
14:56Oh that big black blob over there, there's loads over there
15:00Now don't ever do this without me around, okay?
15:03Come and jump in
15:04Or Daddy
15:05So I'm going to hold you so
15:07Is that the longest it'll go?
15:09Wait, I think I can do it
15:11Do it
15:14Oh!
15:15Right, put them in the water
15:16I think I've got some
15:17Oh, wow
15:18Wow!
15:19Wow!
15:20I've got a whole family
15:23Weeey, oh my gosh
15:26There's so many
15:28With each season comes new life
15:31And with an abundance of natural habitats on our doorstep
15:34We're lucky to have the opportunity to witness the life cycle
15:38Of so many different creatures
15:40It changes throughout the year
15:43It's, you know, the flowers die off in the winter
15:47And then at spring they just come alive again
15:49And there's so much life here
15:51Our lake is home to many birds, insects and impressive mirror carp
15:57Although there is some disagreement on what this particular body of water actually is
16:02So I call this a pond
16:04But Kelvin tells me that officially, because of the size of it, it's a lake
16:09But I just can't bring myself all this lake
16:11So it's a pond
16:12But one thing is, it is full of life
16:15It's full of fish, it's full of tadpoles every year
16:18We have birds and ducks and chicks and a heron
16:22We have so much going on here
16:24And it's not too deep
16:26But it's just deep enough where we can kind of see through
16:31And just get a glimpse of the fish and what's going on under there
16:34And it's so interesting to watch
16:36I could sit here for hours and watch what goes on in here
16:40And the kids are getting a live nature lesson to boot
16:44Not a bad way to pass the time
16:54Several weeks ago, we got the sad news that our much-loved cow Ruby miscarried her calf
17:08Thankfully, she was soon well enough to run with our young bull again
17:11And today, we will find out if he's done his job
17:15Busy day today, we've got Hugo the vet here
17:18And we've got all our cows in, in the shed
17:22And then we'll get Ruby in, and all being well, she's back in calf
17:25And she'll be calving not too long after a cherry
17:29Because the plan is obviously
17:31Royal Cheshire Show, 2025
17:34Four children and the young handlers
17:37That's my dream from last year
17:40So fingers crossed, we'll see
17:43The Royal Cheshire Show is one of the biggest events in the agricultural calendar
17:47And after winning a handful of rosettes last year
17:50We're keen for our herd of cows and kids to get in the ring again
17:55So, before Hugo does the pregnancy test on Ruby
17:59He's checking the herd for TB
18:01Which they will need to be clear of if we're thinking of entering the show
18:05Hi, Hugo
18:07All right, morning, we've got them
18:08Are we clean?
18:09Clean, clean, yeah
18:10I'm going to see you've got the first patient in
18:13Probably TB test them first, then do the dirty job after
18:16Right, OK
18:17TB is a chronic infectious disease that is still an issue in parts of England and Wales
18:24As I've done before, just clip some hair off in two patches
18:28Anybody who keeps cattle has to go through this
18:32We're every six months with the area where we are
18:34And as a new established herd
18:37If you do get a reaction and they deem it, you know, conclusive
18:42That that animal needs to be cold, then yeah
18:45It's devastating on your herd, really
18:50We don't like finding any
18:53But it's important that it's done properly
18:55And it's important that it's done, isn't it?
18:57Yeah
18:58But, yeah
19:00So, I'll just take some measurements off her now
19:04Hugo will inject a small amount of a derivative of the bacteria into the cows
19:09He'll return in a few days to check any reactions
19:14Friday's the nervous day
19:17But, like my dad always tells me
19:21If it's not in your control, don't be worrying about it
19:25Next up is Cherry
19:29This is an award-winning cow, isn't it? Cherry
19:33Do you realise that you're a champion?
19:36You're a Cheshire champion, you know
19:38You've never been in a ring before and I took you in
19:41After her health check, Hugo scans Cherry again
19:44To see how her pregnancy is progressing
19:47Six and a half months, yeah
19:48Judging by the size of the calf's head that I'm holding now
19:52So that means, erm, she's going to be
19:57Sort of an end of May calver, doesn't it?
19:59Yeah
20:00Then that could potentially mean we're taking a
20:03Two or three week old calf to Cheshire show
20:06Yeah, perfect, in June, yeah
20:10I would love to take her to defend the title
20:12But I don't think I'll be showing her
20:15I don't really intend on showing this year, me and Liz
20:16I think we're going to try and take her back seat
20:19And try and get like the kids
20:20And if we've got four kids showing four calves then
20:23Our young calves, Sonic and Ray
20:25Would hopefully be joined by Cherry's expectant calf
20:28And Ruby's
20:29If we get a positive result today
20:31We don't know actually because this is the next test
20:33We've got to get Ruby in
20:35And find out one if she's back in calf
20:37And two when she's due
20:38The last time I was this nervous about a pregnancy scan
20:41Was when we found out we were having twins
20:44Right, okay, so we've got a pregnancy
20:50So, she is three months in calf
20:5612 weeks
20:57Possibly a bit more actually looking at the size of the legs
21:01But it's 14 weeks
21:03So a bit late for show season
21:05But I think we were expecting that, weren't we?
21:08Yeah, we were
21:09That's good news, yeah, she's back in calf
21:10That's the main thing and it's healthy
21:12So she's unfortunately she's going to miss the Cheshire show
21:16So one of the twins, I'm not too sure who yet
21:19Will be without a calf
21:20They might have to share a calf
21:22The most important thing is that she's held this calf
21:24You know, last time she did get in calf and she miscarried
21:26So, yeah, I'm very happy
21:28She's done well there
21:30Well done Ruby
21:32I'm so thrilled for Ruby
21:34She produced such a cracking calf last year
21:36I just hope this one is a simpler birth
21:39This is little Ray
21:42So he was born in July
21:43He was about 50 kilos
21:45He was quite a big calf
21:46And he wouldn't come out
21:48He'd been stuck
21:49And me and Liz pulled him out
21:51And look at him now
21:52I mean they are modicodled a little bit here
21:56But if you keep them tame and keep them friendly and calm
21:59Then days like this hopefully go a little bit smoother
22:02He says
22:03Let's hope the TB testing runs smoothly too
22:06Wait three days and then we'll come and check the skin
22:10And fingers crossed none of them have any reactions on the skin
22:15And then we're TB clear
22:17A nervous wait now until three days
22:19You go come back on Friday
22:21Exam them again then
22:23See you Friday
22:25Thank you for today
22:26Fingers crossed till then
22:28Yeah
22:29We'll be alright
22:42Bar the odd grey day
22:44This spring has been the best we've ever experienced on the farm
22:48And I'm hoping all this spring sunshine will be helping our new addition thrive
22:53Our first crop of oats
22:56As with most of our other endeavours
22:58We're learning as we go
23:00But we're lucky enough to have some expert help at hand
23:03In the form of Ben, our agronomist
23:05And he's back today to check on the crop
23:07And make sure it's growing as it should be
23:14How are the oats looking? Are they looking good?
23:16They are looking good to be fair, yeah
23:18Like in comparison to last week
23:20It was quite a dark green
23:22Right
23:23Now it's sort of gone a lighter green
23:24And I'm going to do a tissue sample to double check
23:27But my suspicion is it's manganese deficiency
23:30Throughout the day
23:31The plant is meant to open and close its stomata
23:33Which is a thing that sort of allows things in
23:36Allows nutrients
23:37Allows nutrients and water in
23:38The problem is what happens is if you've got manganese deficiency
23:41That process can't happen
23:43So they remain open all the time
23:45And then all the moisture is being let go
23:47And that's why, in part, it was kind of floppy
23:50If you feel it, it doesn't feel very...
23:53It's not very... Sturdy
23:54Sturdy
23:55That's manganese deficiency
23:56Oh, right
23:57And actually, you just...
23:58You spray it with, like, foliar manganese
24:00And that just goes away in about a week
24:02You don't want a floppy one, do you?
24:04You don't want a floppy one, do you?
24:06Moving on from flaccid crops to more solid issues
24:12Arable farming has been a real eye-opener
24:15It's taught me just how sensitive plants can be
24:18And how critical it is to get the environment and nutrients
24:21Just right if you want your crop to thrive
24:24And you said the crop's looking good
24:27Because you then said, but it's got a deficiency
24:28So a deficiency is a bad thing, surely?
24:30Well, deficiencies, they're not good
24:32But every single crop is going to get a nutrient deficiency, really
24:36The soil won't provide it with everything that it requires to grow
24:40So you have to apply it as a foliar feed, basically
24:44And what about the lack of rain? Is that an issue?
24:48Well, yeah, so the lack of rain, for one, it will create this hormone in the plant
24:53The plant's response is to produce a thing called ethylene
24:56And ethylene is effectively the ripening hormone of all plants
25:00So you want a bit of ethylene to make it mature at the end
25:03Or else it would never actually mature
25:06But if you have a build-up of ethylene, what effectively the plant does
25:09Is goes, we're under pressure, we need to race to the end
25:13Because all the plant wants to do is survive
25:15But that's not good if you grow in a crop
25:17These side shoots will start to die
25:20And it will only keep what it really needs
25:23Wow, so it'll kind of self-sabotage
25:25Effectively, yeah
25:26Just to survive
25:27Just to get through to the end, yeah
25:29Another thing that I have seen
25:31Is when in these big fields you just see kind of massive, fancy garden
25:36Essentially like a garden jet on a bigger scale
25:38Just spraying water
25:40If it's not raining, then can we just...
25:43Like you'd water the grass in the garden
25:45It's actually not a stupid thing to say
25:47Because in certain parts of the country, in Europe and in America
25:51They do irrigate their crops
25:53Right, right, wow
25:54But the amount of water that you'd need to sort of simulate the rain
25:57Would be thousands of litres
25:59Oh really?
26:00You'd have to be doing it with a sprayer
26:02Like, I don't know
26:03You'd have to do like a hundred passes
26:05Oh right, yeah
26:06In a day
26:07Just to get close to like two mil of rain
26:09So I can keep...
26:10I wouldn't bother
26:11Yeah
26:12You'll be there
26:13Visions of me and Liz walking up with kids
26:16Just...
26:17I'll come next week and you'll be exhausted
26:18You'll still be going
26:19Well, that option's definitely off the table
26:23So it's back to watching the weather forecast
26:25And crossing our fingers for some rain
26:28And who would have thought that oak crops
26:30Would earn a spot on my ever-growing worry list
26:33So I'll wait for these lab results
26:35Yeah
26:36On the leaf test
26:37Tissue test
26:38And in the meantime I'll do a rain dance
26:40Exactly
26:43Right
26:44Thanks Ben
26:45See you next week mate
26:46See you next week
26:48It feels like at every stage, every week
26:51There's something new to consider
26:54It's so dependent on the weather
26:56And things out of your control really
26:58But the whole point for me of having a low-input farm
27:02Is that nature kind of does all the hard work really
27:05You've got great animals that thrive in the conditions we've got
27:09Those native breeds we know will do so well
27:12And we want to establish a crop that will do well
27:16900 feet above sea level in the north of England
27:19I want the kind of land to provide itself in that sense
27:23You know, sustain itself
27:25But there's a lot to a growing crop
27:27Nothing is ever straightforward
27:29I'm not deterred by that
27:31This was an experiment this year
27:33Let's not forget that
27:34You know, we've never done this before
27:35This farm has not done anything like this
27:37For the last 20 or so years
27:40It was always going to be a bit of a gamble
27:42It was always going to be a bit of an unknown
27:44So I just think we've tried it
27:47That's enough, that's a big step
27:50It's looking all right so far
27:52That's an even bigger step
27:54And what will be will be
27:56So keep our fingers crossed
27:59Who's your favourite cow?
28:12Which one is it?
28:13Erm...
28:14Erm...
28:15The little cow
28:17The little cow, is that Ray?
28:19Yeah
28:20Do you like Ray? Yeah? Is it your favourite?
28:22Not a big cow
28:24Not the big cow? Do you not like the big ones?
28:26I like the little one
28:27You like the little one?
28:28Yeah
28:29Ah, okay
28:30Big day today
28:31Erm...
28:32TB results day
28:33So...
28:34Naturally this is where the nerves kick in
28:36Yeah, we just want a clear result today
28:38Erm... because you know
28:39It can be devastating
28:40If you've got five cows or 500 cows
28:42It's...
28:43It can have the same sort of impact
28:44So...
28:45Fingers crossed
28:46Let's think positive
28:47Although TB cases in Cheshire are in decline
28:51Our farm sits in what's called an edge area
28:54Bordering counties where the infection rate remains higher
28:58Max, what do you reckon? Is it going to be good today?
29:01We've got you smiling so...
29:03That'll be a final
29:05Right, Hugo
29:06How are you going?
29:07We've got an apprentice here today
29:08I can see
29:09Little Max is er...
29:10This could be determined whether he becomes a vet or a farmer
29:15Do you think?
29:16Might maybe, yeah
29:17What do you think, Max?
29:18Would you like to be a vet like Hugo or a farmer like Daddy?
29:21A farmer like Daddy
29:23A farmer like Daddy
29:24Yeah, I'll do that
29:25I'll do that
29:26Bogey
29:27Let's get you sat down then
29:29Mr. Cute
29:30There we go
29:31Like that
29:32Perfect
29:33How's that?
29:34Is that a good little seat?
29:35Yeah?
29:36Right, you sit there
29:37And Daddy's going to climb over here
29:38And we'll just get them through, yeah?
29:45Hugo will inspect and measure the site where he injected a form of the bacteria
29:50If any reactions are detected, then the cows will have to be culled
29:55Yeah, no reactions, no lumps, so she's clear
29:59No TB in her
30:01Good, good
30:02Just cross her off the list
30:03Yeah, that's a good start
30:05We'll get them through
30:08So again
30:10No lumps, no reaction
30:12So
30:13That one's clear
30:15Right, cool, next one
30:17Two down, three to go
30:19Two down
30:20Max, you okay, mate?
30:21Guess who this is?
30:25This is Ray, your favourite
30:27Give him a wave
30:30Ray's okay, Max
30:31He's good
30:32No TB
30:33He's alright
30:34Not poorly
30:35All but one done, yeah
30:36We've got the last one now
30:38Crowd of the bull
30:41Come on, lad
30:48Yeah, so no lumps, no reactions
30:50So that means there's no reactions on any of them
30:53Which is a clear TB test
30:55Clear
30:56Alright
30:57So you can relax now
30:58Good, good
30:59Cross him off
31:00And I'll put that through to the ministry later
31:03Yeah, alright
31:06Yeah, big relief
31:09It's only five, but still it's pretty nerve-wracking
31:11Can't imagine what it'll be like if you've got scores and scores
31:14But yeah, good news
31:17Clear result
31:18And er
31:19Start looking forward now
31:23Hugo will update the government site that is tracking the disease
31:27And hopefully
31:28Many other farmers will be receiving the same good news this spring
31:31And TB rates continue to fall
31:35Are you going to say well done to all the cows now?
31:37Yeah
31:38Come here
31:39I want you to say
31:40Say well done cows
31:41Very good cows
31:42So what do we say to Hugo?
31:43I say
31:44Yeah
31:45Thanks Hugo for today mate
31:46No problem
31:47Good result
31:48You're very good on mate
31:49Alright
31:50Right, come on
32:04Growing up on the farm means that when we're not roping the kids in to help with the farm jobs
32:09They're off finding their own fun
32:10They're off finding their own fun
32:11And sometimes they find natural treasures
32:15Guys, look what I found
32:18What have you got?
32:19Look what Milo's got
32:21What is it?
32:22Look what?
32:23I think it's a bird nest
32:24I just found that on the floor
32:26Oh really?
32:27The kids all know not to disturb nesting birds
32:31But this abandoned nest is great for the kids to see up close
32:36Hey look what they've used
32:38What's that?
32:39Sheep wool
32:40Sheeps?
32:41I've never known a bird's nest to use sheep's wool before
32:45Wow that must have been a cosy
32:47Who would like to sleep in there?
32:49Me
32:50Me
32:51I'll snuggle up in there
32:52That looks so cool
32:54This is like a little bird's nest isn't it?
32:56Is this like a little bird's nest?
32:58I'm the baby bird
32:59You're the baby bird
33:00Aww
33:01We're the love birds
33:03I'm the baby
33:04I'm the baby
33:05One project that's seriously testing our mettle is the barn
33:23We had the bright idea to host a wedding here for some friends
33:27Very romantic, very ambitious
33:30But with the big day fast approaching we really need to get moving
33:34Especially since it's currently looking more like an agricultural storage unit than a wedding venue
33:39The wedding is the tester
33:41So we're emptying it so it's a blank canvas
33:43And from then on we need Kelvin to get our thinking caps on and see what else we could do in here
33:48We're getting the concrete poured in a couple of days
33:51It's got to be emptied for that
33:53And if there's one thing we're good at working to it's a deadline
33:56It takes a special set of wheels to handle a job of this importance
34:01My jingle van
34:03This van has been with us for a very long time before we ever lived on a farm
34:08And my dad borrowed it once and he didn't give it back for two years
34:11And then when we finally moved to the farm we were like
34:14Dad can we have that van back?
34:16It's rusty, it's old, but it just does the job
34:22The only thing is wrong with it, the only thing, it's only two wheel drive
34:27And we've been stuck a few times haven't we
34:31Today though, it'll be used as originally intended to help us haul some of this rubbish away
34:37Well, I'll say rubbish
34:41The birds will be loving life, innit?
34:44Aren't they?
34:45Yeah
34:47It's like a ready-made hedge, isn't it?
34:49We don't waste anything on the farm if we don't have to
34:52Some birds will be really happy in that
34:55Next season
34:56Between the birds, a bonfire and Liz's creations
35:01Every twig will find a new purpose
35:04Oh, I hope we don't get stuck
35:06Yeah, keep going
35:12Slow down, not too, Matt
35:15If you spin a little bit, there's no point in thinking
35:19Keep going
35:26Yeah, that'll do
35:28Get that on
35:31This is our first crack at renovating a space like this
35:34Nail it, and it could pave the way for plenty more events to come
35:38It'll be nice to have
35:40A bit of love and romance on the farm
35:44And someone else's
35:46Memory of
35:48You know, it's quite an honour to host someone's wedding here
35:52It's been really special
35:54See, I'll do all this
35:56And then Kelvin
35:58Will get his favourite
36:00Favourite
36:01Machine out
36:05It's quite impressive
36:11You know, it's something that
36:13When I met him, if he'd have picked me up in it
36:16I'd have never met him again
36:18But
36:20He's really handy around the farm
36:24Here he is
36:25That's how you speak for that
36:30That's how you speak for that
36:36All this talk of weddings has me feeling romantic
36:41You know there's going to be a wedding here?
36:43Yeah? For the first ever wedding
36:45I've got an idea
36:47What?
36:48Welcome to our house
36:49Aww
36:50Anything you come with?
36:52Why not?
36:54No, it doesn't matter
36:56I just thought about all the work I'd have to do to make this a wedding space for us
37:02It'd be fine as it is
37:04Just a few fairy lights
37:05I'll be in a wedding dress putting fairy lights up
37:07You're romantic, we're bringing a bit of romance to the farm
37:10I might need to let the idea sink in a little with Liz
37:13But this space certainly has potential
37:16The barn is empty
37:18The barn is empty
37:20It's going to be good, isn't it?
37:21It's going to be really good
37:22This could be so many things
37:24Interior shop
37:26Stage
37:28A show?
37:30A theatre show?
37:31Pantomime
37:32It could be anything
37:33Might as well get myself a job
37:35I could actually cast myself
37:36In my own production
37:38You know what we could actually do?
37:40We could create
37:42A farm musical
37:45I'm serious
37:46Can you sing?
37:47No, no
37:49No, that bit I won't be in
37:52It could almost be our story
37:54Two actors
37:56What?
37:59Why have you just spat your tea out?
38:02Babe, it could be our story
38:03Two actors decide to get a farm
38:05We have kids
38:07We've got enough to do
38:08We're not creating a farm panto
38:10No, it's not a pantomime
38:11It's a musical
38:14We could get someone into it
38:15Oh, God
38:17Babe, do you not think that could be a good idea?
38:19It is, but just one step at a time, okay?
38:22Let's get through the wedding
38:24The farm musical
38:26Is that the scent of a Tony Award
38:28Or just manure?
38:30Either way, the barn refurb
38:32Just took a major leap towards showtime
38:34This year's lambing season is almost done
38:49We currently have over 60 strong healthy lambs bounding around our fields
38:54And the last of our expectant mums is finally showing signs of going into labour
38:59She's doing good
39:01She'll be alright for a minute, let's do this
39:04Three, four years ago
39:06That would have been a big, not panic, but we'd have been like, that's lambing, we've got to move them
39:12Whereas now we're a bit like, oh yeah, that's having a lamb and we're going to move these cows
39:18We know what we're doing a tiny bit more now
39:19Most of the ewes have managed to birth naturally, but it's always good to keep an eye on them, just in case they need a helping hand
39:30What's it like to have a contraction?
39:33What does it feel like?
39:35It's so hard, so it's like, do you know, it's like, it's one of them feelings
39:40And what tenses, just like your stomach?
39:42It's like pins and needles, like, all tensing, yeah
39:44What, and then it's on, then it goes off
39:46And it goes and you're like, oh
39:48And then, and then it comes again and you're like, oh
39:51It's, it's hard
39:53The hardest thing that you'll ever do
39:55I forget that you've, I forget that you've, I forget that you've actually had
39:58Kids, aren't you?
39:59Well, I don't forget that, but I mean, you've
40:01Thinking back to you having contractions and that
40:04You were really strong
40:0630 hours I was having contractions for
40:08You step in after half an hour with the sheep
40:1030 hours I was having contractions for
40:12The things I've done
40:14As this ewe is clearly struggling
40:17With only the lamb's head and one of the legs out
40:20It's time to jump in and give her a hand
40:23You push her in and I'll just pull the lamb out
40:26Oh God!
40:28Oh yeah, the foot's stuck, she's dead tight
40:31I can't find the foot
40:33I can't find the foot
40:43Oh, she's coming, she's coming
40:49Pick it up, pick it up
40:50It's a big lamb
40:52Yeah, but I just need one
40:53We've had a couple of lambs like that though, eh?
41:07Just one leg is out and the other one is stuck
41:12But it's almost like you go over to help and the mum's tighten up
41:15You just have to get in there and pull them out
41:17Because you think it would push them out a bit tricky
41:19But she did it
41:20With the lamb born safely and the cows clear of TB
41:25We can get them all out of the barn to enjoy the fresh grass and spring sunshine
41:30Managing the animals has definitely become a lot easier over the past year
41:46Which is more than I can say for our other herd
41:49They make more mess than any other animal on this farm
41:55Our kids
41:57Actual animals
41:59The biggest animals of the farm are our kids
42:01Without a down
42:03They're the hardest to control
42:05They're the hardest to keep clean
42:07They're the hardest to move
42:09Farm is a breeze
42:11Compared to having four kids
42:13There's a reason I look so dishevelled all the time
42:16And it's because I've got four kids on a farm
42:20Somehow, we are still managing to run the farm and raise kids
42:26Whilst dealing with the upheaval of still not living in the farmhouse after the fire
42:31Look!
42:32Look!
42:34Look at you daddy!
42:37And while Marnie and Milo are now old enough to understand we'll be back on the farm in time
42:42I can't help but think how this situation is affecting Maximus and Mateus
42:47For the last six months of their lives it's been, you know, they've been living in hotels and Airbnbs and
42:55It's all been, you know, a lot of disruption
42:58Yeah, they just see it as the places where we come and do jobs and for them, just have fun
43:03It's like a day out
43:05They are still quite confused because they don't really see this as their home at the minute
43:15They don't actually realise that this is where we live and our house, their bedroom, is not their bedroom because we've had a fire
43:24But it will be, hopefully again soon
43:27I wonder if they remember this when they get older
43:30Kids just take it in their stride but
43:33You can see it's a pretty confused blessing
43:37Although we're still not living in the farmhouse
43:40We bring the kids up to the farm every single day
43:43As Liz and I have always known that since moving here
43:46This is where our family is meant to be
43:49When I say green light, it's going to run as fast as we can
43:53Keep playing early times
43:54It's not just about farming, it's not just about that
43:57It's such a lifestyle
44:00And a lifestyle that has suited us, having four kids
44:04It's been a real blessing
44:06Because I think
44:08It's given them so much purpose and so much adventure to their life
44:13That I just
44:15I can't imagine them any other way
44:18Put your head down that way for five seconds
44:20Like they're filthy, they mess, they cause absolute destruction wherever they go
44:27And I think
44:29You're only fit for a farm really
44:33I don't know if we'd be welcome on the street anymore
44:35Next time on our farm
