00:00Hollywood evaluates films by many measures. Box office performance, critics' reviews,
00:05awards achievements, but does your favorite film pass the climate test?
00:10Using results from a climate change version of the Bechtel test,
00:13THR surveyed top box office hits to see how many addressed the environmental crisis.
00:20Let's take a look at the results.
00:23The non-profit Good Energy recently teamed up with Colby College's Buck Lab for Climate
00:27and Environment to release the Climate Reality Check as a tool to measure the representation of
00:32climate change on screen. The study was inspired by the popular Bechtel-Wallace test, which measures
00:37the representation of women in TV and film. The Climate Reality Check is pretty straightforward.
00:42It asks whether one, climate change exists in the project, and two, if a character knows it. THR took
00:49a look at the data, zeroing in on blockbusters from 2018 to 2022. How did the highest-grossing film in
00:55the MCU fair? Avengers Endgame did not pass. It's a billion to one cosmic fluke. Actually,
01:02most of the Marvel films did not pass the climate test. But over at DC, Aquaman did pass the climate
01:09reality check. Jason Momoa would be proud. Two back-to-back Tom Cruise blockbusters,
01:14Top Gun Maverick and Mission Impossible Fallout both did not pass. Jurassic World Dominion did pass.
01:21Venom, starring Tom Hardy, also passed. Jumanji The Next Level did not pass. But another Dwayne Johnson
01:29flick, Fast and Furious Presents Hobbs and Shaw did pass. The Batman, interestingly, has passed,
01:36meeting just one of the elements. From the study's full data poll of 250 films, only 9.6 passed the
01:42climate reality check. However, climate inclusion is becoming more common, with climate present in twice as
01:48many films released during more recent years. Also, the study noted stories that include climate change
01:54are profitable, with films that had at least one character aware of climate change performing 10%
02:00better at the box office than those that did not. For a full look at the blockbusters that passed the
02:06climate reality check, head to THR.com.
