00:00Oh, I'm sorry. I have just got back from seeing the Batman in theaters and I'm a little bit lost
00:12for words. If you're here for my review of the movie and you have not seen it yet, then you have
00:18come to the right place. This is my spoiler free review. If you have seen it or if you don't care
00:23about spoilers, I'm also uploading a review filled and packed with complete spoilers for the entire
00:28plot of the movie, all the secrets, all the good stuff. So if you want to see that one, I'm sure
00:32the link will be in the description down below or just head to the channel and check it out.
00:36Again, this one is a spoiler free one, so carry on watching and you will not need to worry about
00:41spoilers. Let's get into it.
00:42So off the bat, the vibe of the movie is exactly what I thought it was going to be. It was a full
01:00on detective noir story based around the world's greatest detective, the Batman. This is finally
01:06the Batman movie that I have always wanted to see. And if I'm honest, this is a type of story
01:11based in the Bat universe that I had kind of given up on ever getting to see because every Batman and
01:17every superhero movie we get is always filled with action, comedic relief, or just over the top
01:24computer generate visuals. This movie has absolutely none of that. Combining a real world detective
01:31vigilante type movie with what is essentially a grounded take on a comic book superhero really,
01:39really works. I'll start with what I thought about the performances from the actors themselves,
01:44then we'll go into some plot details with of course out giving anything away. So first of all,
01:49what do I think of Robert Pattinson as the Batman? We all know that when he was cast, when he was
01:54announced as being the new Batman, there was a lot of backlash. All the Twilight haters out there
01:58were really, really ripping into this one. People were boycotting it before having seen anything.
02:03Then we got some trailers, we got some set photos, and people eased off a little. A little. When we
02:10first got that opening sequence where the Batman is beating down on those thugs with the white face
02:14paint, people were a bit more relaxed. They got off Pattinson's back a little bit, but you go to any
02:20forum, any Facebook group, any page, and you will still see tons and tons of hate. I think that ends
02:27today. Anyone that's seen the movie cannot say that Pattinson was not a fantastic Batman. Now this
02:33is a different type of Batman and different type of Bruce Wayne to what we've ever seen before. We're
02:38used to the playboy billionaire who spends his nights dressed up as a bat fighting bad guys. This
02:45is a very, very mentally damaged individual who only becomes himself when he puts on the cape and
02:53cowl. And if you ask me, that's exactly how Batman should be. Batman is the persona. Bruce Wayne is
03:00the mask. And that is how it should be in any telling of his story. And yes, you can argue that
03:06other portrayals have done that. Let's say Christian Bale, for example. That playboy billionaire kind of
03:12guys isn't necessarily what Bruce Wayne is like. It's the act that he puts on to stop people thinking
03:17that he's Batman. But I also feel like in those movies, yes, Batman is the true identity and Bruce
03:23Wayne and so on and so forth. But it's a little less real. It doesn't feel like him. You know,
03:28it still feels like he's putting something on. Whereas Pattinson, he just felt raw. He felt real
03:33in the role. And not only that, but this is going away from the performance of Pattinson a little bit.
03:39But this is the first time we've had a true Batman story. This wasn't focused necessarily on a
03:45villain. It wasn't the side characters or anything like that that took the limelight.
03:49It was solely about Batman. It was far more Batman than there was Bruce Wayne. And the film was
03:54definitely better for it. I'm undecided yet if I will go as far as saying he is the best Batman
03:58we've ever had. I'm personally a massive fan of Ben Affleck, as you guys know. But Pattinson's
04:05definitely the most real, the most grounded take we've gotten. I don't really have a bad thing to say
04:09about him. I know a lot of people have criticized that he doesn't really smile at all in the movie,
04:14but guys, this is Batman. I literally have a t-shirt. You can probably find me wearing it in other
04:20videos that makes fun of all of Batman's expressions. And they're all just like that. That's the
04:25character. That's how it should be. If Batman was laughing and joking constantly, it'd be like the
04:31Joss Whedon version of Justice League. We'd all hate it. So yes, very, very happy with his performance
04:35as both Bruce and Batman. Next up, we'll talk about Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. She is a very,
04:43very interesting version of Selina. She's grounded, again, in this version, in this take,
04:48in this reality of Gotham. They all have to be grounded to kind of fit in. She's believable
04:54as a cat burglar. She's a very layered character. There's lots to her. There's some cool little
04:59twists and turns with her character that, again, I won't spoil, but I'm sure you will all enjoy.
05:04Overall, I think she was a fantastic choice for the role. Her action sequences were great.
05:08Her emotional sequences were great. The whole kind of dynamic between her and Batman were
05:13absolutely fantastic. And I would say that Zoe Kravitz and Robert Pattinson had undeniable
05:18on-screen chemistry, which, of course, for this Bat and Cat romance, you have to have. And I imagine
05:23that was part of the big deciding factor for casting these two key players is can they work
05:29well together on screen? And yes, they do. Next, I'll cover Paul Dano, aka The Riddler,
05:34Edward Nashton. My god, was he scary. For such a normal-looking human being who, yes, in this and
05:42similar roles that he's played in the past, thinking prisoners, for example, they do make
05:46him look like a loser, pretty much. But he just brings this sinister, creepy vile-ness to the
05:57character. There's no other words to describe it. He's just disgusting. And you really do kind
06:02of believe that he's the kind of individual that would go to these sick, sick, twisted lengths to
06:08try and achieve his goals or do what he's trying to do. So I don't really have anything bad to say
06:13about him. Even his eye movements were giving me shivers. He was very creepy. A serial killer-type
06:19villain like The Riddler is in this. Spot on. Next, I want to talk about Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
06:25I think some of my favourite scenes in the entire movie involved Colin Farrell. It wasn't so much
06:31comedic relief, but he was a little bit... I don't even want to say light-hearted, I'm giving the wrong
06:35impression, but I just thoroughly enjoyed his scenes. He really embraced that character. He wasn't even
06:41slightly recognisable, as you all know from trailers, but in the movie it's even less so. I genuinely just
06:47can't see Colin Farrell underneath all those prosthetics. And the way he completely changes his
06:51personality to become Oswald Cobblepot was just spot on. His dialogue was fantastic. His accent was
06:57brilliant. His mannerisms were great. He really, really embraced it and became the Penguin. My favourite
07:03live-action Penguin by far. Okay, what about Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon? Now, I would go as far as saying
07:10that Jeffrey Wright almost stole the show. I thought he was absolutely fantastic as Jim Gordon. The dynamic
07:16between him and Batman was fantastic. The majority of the story is almost like a dynamic duo story, but the
07:23dynamic duo is Batman and Gordon, not Batman and Robin. He was a very, very, very key part throughout
07:29the whole film, and I'm very grateful for it. He was absolutely fantastic. I found him very believable.
07:35I really, really bought him as that true, really good cop that wouldn't be bought and couldn't be
07:40corrupted and would be there to help save Gotham, the GCPD, and help Batman. And I, for one, cannot think
07:47of a better actor to play Jim Gordon moving forward. Finally, I want to touch on Andy Circus
07:52as Alfred. I thought, again, another perfect casting. He was absolutely brilliant. My only complaint
07:58about him is he was in very few scenes. He was clearly very, very good at this role. He had this,
08:05like, complicated relationship with Bruce from the very beginning, and as that part of the story sort
08:10of rolls on, we kind of see less and less of his character, which, in my opinion, is a massive shame.
08:15I'm not going to, like, take points off the movie's score as a whole because an actor wasn't in it as
08:19much as I would have liked because he was fantastic and I absolutely loved him. I just would have liked
08:23a little more. Okay, that's it for the cast. What about the story as a whole? Now, as I said at the
08:28start, it's very much a detective noir story based in reality. Now, we all knew that going in, but my god,
08:34it really is a detective story. Yes, it's a three hour long film, and I would say a good two and a half
08:41hours of that is really detective work trying to solve the mystery, trying to solve the riddle
08:46and the case that is the Riddler's plan. Obviously, there's some really great twists and turns and
08:51kind of side stories and side relationships and whatnot with other characters, but at its core,
08:57it's all about Batman and the GCPD trying to solve this case. And as one of Batman's main nicknames
09:04is the world's greatest detective, it's great to finally see a story set around that. Not just,
09:09oh, here's Batman trying to use some gadgets at a crime scene to figure something out because,
09:13yep, he's a detective, don't forget that part. This is actually a whole story dedicated to that.
09:18It shows why the police actually are willing to work with him because look what he can do.
09:23The guy's a genius. He figures things out. He sees things that no one else does.
09:27And I, for one, I'm so grateful to Matt Reeves for taking the story down this route.
09:32I kind of want to say that a criticism is the length. It did feel like a long film.
09:37As a Batman fan, clearly, I always want to say the more Batman, the better. And in this case,
09:45I think that is true. But when I was sat down in the cinema, it didn't help I needed to pee real
09:50bad from about halfway through. But it did feel long. I was very aware that we had been in there
09:55a long time. I've seen many comments and reviews saying it doesn't feel like three hours. It flies
09:59by. I didn't feel that way. It did feel three hours. However, I don't think there was anything
10:06that should have been removed. Everything was key to the story. And I absolutely loved the story.
10:12So I'm absolutely willing to forgive the length of the movie. It felt necessary, if that makes sense.
10:17Yes, it was long. And yes, it felt long. But everything in it was completely necessary.
10:21I hope that gets the point across. Overall, to conclude and not ramble on too much and just give
10:25you guys my overall thoughts on the movie, I absolutely loved it. Every single role was cast
10:30perfectly for this version of Batman. I'm not saying this is necessarily the best Batman. I'm
10:37not saying that Robert Pattinson is the best Batman. I'm just saying that for this world, for this
10:41universe, everything was done perfectly. Oh, I haven't even talked about the cinematography and
10:46the score. Ah, let's do that before I conclude. Cinematography, the most gorgeous superhero movie ever to be
10:51released, without a doubt. Not only was it beautifully shot and beautifully contrasted
10:57between a saturated world and sharp images of color like the oranges and the reds, which I just
11:02loved massively. But it didn't feel like there was a heavy reliance on CGI. Although of course,
11:08there would have been a lot of computer generated visuals in there. It felt very, very real. They use
11:13a good amount of practical stuff, which really helped sell the fact that this kind of vigilante could
11:18exist in real life. I'm talking a lot about how grounded and how real it is, but that's what
11:23they were going for, and they've certainly, certainly achieved it. Now, as for the score,
11:28well, all I can say is as soon as I got in my car, I was sat there with my buddies, and I was just like,
11:31yeah.
11:37You all know it from the trailer, but boy, does it stick with you. And every time Batman first comes
11:42on screen, like he walks out from the shadows or whatnot, you get that note, and it just works.
11:48That's the new Batman theme, if you ask me. Forget Hans Zimmer. I didn't mean that. I love you,
11:52Hans. Forget Danny Elfman. I didn't mean it. I love you, Danny. But this, to me, that just really
11:57felt like an iconic, be all and end all, the Batman theme. I just loved it. May not be for
12:03everyone, but I think it was an Oscar-worthy score, an Oscar-worthy cinematography, for sure.
12:08Back to my conclusion. I'm very, very happy. I'm going to stop around with a nod so you guys can go and
12:12watch the film yourselves. This is my spoiler-free review, after all, so you probably haven't seen it.
12:15What are you doing watching this? Go to the cinema and see it. I'm very happy. As a Batman fan,
12:20this delivered exactly what I wanted. It was noir. It was detective. It was Batman. It was brutal.
12:25It was real. It was gorgeous looking. It had a fantastic score. The Batsuit looked great.
12:31It was moody. It was long. It delivered on all cylinders. Guys, I'm going to give it a score,
12:38and I'm going to give it 10 out of 10. Boom! 10 out of 10 has been coming around quite a lot with
12:45this movie. I've seen loads of places rating it 10 out of 10, like IGN and whatnot. Now,
12:50I struggled with rating it 10 out of 10. I was going to give it a 9, but I was sat down for about
12:54an hour after I watched it, trying to think of a score to give it, and I couldn't think of a reason
12:59why I was giving it 9. I didn't have a reason why I took a point off it. There was no reason.
13:04There was nothing I didn't like about this movie, so there we go. It's a 10 out of 10 from me.
13:09Oh boy! Now I'm going to do my spoiler full review. Thank you so much for watching, guys. Go and
13:13check out The Batman. It's fantastic. Just make sure you pee first. I hope you have a great day.
13:18Thank you so much for watching. Don't forget to like and subscribe, and return to the Batcave for more
13:22Bat content.
13:34you
